    Author update!

I'm editing stuff! But also incredibly dried out of writing power atm. I'll get going again soon, but just bear with me for a bit. I'm publishing a chapter of XCOM today, then start on the daily writing (not publishing) again tomorrow morning. In the meantime, always remember:

    Remembering Koji Wada

Like every year, I like to remember the man/legend responsible for the theme songs of one of my favorite shows of all time on the anniversary of his death.

So if you were wondering about the timing for the latest Isekai chapters? There you go.

    Welp, here's a life update

These last couple of weeks have been a bit of a rollercoaster. Good things have happened, and also bad ones. No wonder I could relate to both Furina and Navia in the latest Isekai chapter. Sometimes pretending things are fine is really exhausting, even if they do get better.

    Welp, another year older and...

...still writing ponies. (Among other things, granted.)

Update to the Isekai coming tonight! And some additional details and change of plans.

First, to everyone waiting patiently for the next Isekai chapter, I apologize for the delay. I know there are a lot of people that want to see another visit to Hell happen soon, and it will, I promise. However, due to some circumstances, I decided for a different pair of visitors to visit the bar this week.

Have you heard of BP? · 12:01am Jan 15th, 2015

And I don't mean the gas company, mean this guy:

Title of Piece: Burraku Pansa reading a book. (Estimated by curators to be from circa 2013—possibly 14—due to the lack of the Superman cape.)

Yes, the one and only Burraku Pansa, who had the dubious honor of rooming with me at BronyCon! Well, it has come to my attention that this amazing writer—author of 7 stories of high-quality, thought-provoking pony words—does not have the attention he deserves! That merely gives him the excuse to not write more. (This is, of course, false. There's no excuse.)

The first story of his I ever read was Plainswalker, which was submitted to one of the World Building Alliance's Join us... competitions. It's an amazing story, short and sweet, and was followed up in another competition with A Hyena's Laugh, which proves Burraku has talent in droves.

The point remains, that this man, is an awesome writer and you are doing yourself a disservice by not giving him a chance!

Edit:

dubious honor of rooming with me at BronyCon!

Also to be clear it is a privilege. I roomed with Pen Stroke and others for BABScon last year and I still have't gotten over the experience.:twilightsheepish:

Oh hey, I should talk to him more. I don't talk to many of my pals in WRITE lately anymore...

Ah, what the hell. I'm drafting my first riff in a year and a half, so while I'm still waxing nostalgic, I can try and reach out on Skype again.

I feel like this is the same post RainbowBob and Skeeter The Lurker posted within the hour.
Oh it is? Okay. Neat.

If this guy ALL THREE of your attentions, then he's either actually awesome or you're all pulling off a well-executed massive troll. I'm about to find out I suppose...

Between you guys and Chess, I'd say that the number of greedy adventure groups is pretty substantial. :P

2723671 But we're not an adventure group

2723678 Keeping track of all the fanon in that group is even more convoluted than the world building in Chess Game of the Gods. How do you guys even function? :rainbowlaugh: No matter, there are quite a few stories that I've enjoyed reading in that group. :pinkiehappy:

It's pony fanfiction, not Pulitzer canon. No offense but calm down.

I'd be worried if it was Pulitzer-worthy, given that it's not journalism :raritywink:

2723778 Pulitzer prizes can be awarded for literature, too.

Also I've read this guy before, and I honestly don't see the "droves" of talent that you talk about. He writes fine but it's nothing special or worth worshipping over.

2723802 Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder after all. For some, it's a bearded guy in a gorilla suit reading a book. For others, not so much.

There is no one 'fanon'

It's a discussion group. Having just one fanon is silly when it's much more interesting to see what everyone else thinks.

There are six categories in letters and drama:

Fiction – for distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life.
Drama – for a distinguished play by an American playwright, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life.
History – for a distinguished book on the history of the United States.
Biography or Autobiography – for a distinguished biography or autobiography by an American author.
Poetry – for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American poet.
General Non-Fiction – for a distinguished book of non-fiction by an American author that is not eligible for consideration in any other category.

Yep. Sounds exactly like the genres I read here on Fimfic.

2723809 Tell that to the people who think Eternal and My Little Dashie are "masterpieces." I've actually heard some people say that.

2723827 I used to think they were. Then I thought the way you did. Then I realized that they were when MLP fanfiction was new. If they were posted now, they would be generic stuff. Hell, My Little Dashie is the damn story that set the "Pony visits me on earth," trope that everyone says is bad now.

To each their own though! :rainbowwild:

2723927 A lot of supposedly good stories on this site are like that, all suffering from the Seinfeld effect, though I thought some were bad even before they got tired. There are just too many overrated stories and authors that people constantly go on about. The best stories I've ever read on this site sometimes have barely more than a thousand views, but I still love them because I think they're wonderfully written and just very entertaining to read.

2723962 I'm glad somebody knows what the Seinfeld effect is! Yay!

But yeah. It's like that with everything, though.

2723827 Masterpieces? Not a chance, not even when they were new.
My Little Dashie though, is like Cupcakes, in that it is a recognized name in the fandom. Many many users on this site were originally introduced to pony fiction due to that story. It also does do a good job of pulling heartstrings at the end, even if the majority of it is sub-par.

Eternal, on the other hand, was one of the first good and popular Twilestia stories using the struggle to start a relationship, instead of just the drama of the reveal as most do. Due to the fight Twilight has to go through, and the message behind it, the story is stronger than many of the similar stories with better prose but lighter plot. Also there was some drama back when it came out which helped boost it's numbers. It may not be an 'award winning / best seller' quality story, but it's still good.

2724205 I wouldn't call it good, but whatever. There's a lot of "good" stories out there that I don't think are good. Past Sins and Fallout Equestria, for example. I just don't think either are worth the amount of praise they recieve, especially the latter.

And it's worse when an author has written this story that's gotten so much attention, that he becomes a pretentious jerk who is incapable of taking any sort of negative criticism without acting out. Like Aegis Shield, for example. Another author whose work I believe is severely overrated.

2724230 I understand a lot of people not liking Past Sins. The style is just slightly odd and the story is fairly predictable, especially when you look at it now, but it's another classic that was fairly innovative when it started out.

Fallout Equestria is great, but not in the story, more in the masterful blend between Fallout 3 and MLP. The world feels as fleshed out and complete as either of it's parents, which is quite rare in crossovers. I do get a lot of people not liking it on it's style, but it really couldn't have gone another way without ruining the Fallout side of the equation. (I am of course speaking only of the original by Kkat, not the hundereds of spin-offs.)

As for what is good and what is not in a lot of these older stories, it's beyond just a matter of taste imo and becomes a matter of perspective. I've have read some truly AWFUL stories on here. I don't mean they have issues with grammar or purple prose or telling instead of showing either. I mean stories that are extremely formulaic in the worst way. I won't drop any names out of respect of the authors, but there's the "HiE"s, the "7th element"s, the "My Little"s, the "anime / video game" crossovers, and a few others, all of which are mostly the same basic setup in each subgenre. Even a large amount of shipping stories do it. There are good and even great examples in each group, but a large number are so similar they become practically interchangeable. I have to constantly switch subgenres to change my palette every few stories or I'd have quit reading long ago. Most of the Classic stories were the originals in their subgenres and are therefore a bit less formulaic in most cases.
