"Cards" Debrief and What's Next · 10:53pm Nov 12th, 2014
Originally I was going to write this when Cards Against Equiniti finally gets dumped out of the feature box, but even after two days of it being finished, it's still there in 4th place. And still I'm getting notifications about it being added to a bookshelf every minute or so. So who the fark knows when it'll die down.
Anyway, an official "hullo!" from me to the 80 or so new followers I gained as a result of writing that fic. How's it going? I'm Matt, I'm 6ft 4 and I write obscenely slowly, hence why you'll see month long gaps between some of my chapters. It was kind of a miracle Cards got out in under a week. Hope that doesn't put any of you off, and besides, I'm improving all the time!
The reception Cards got blew me away, and utterly justified my original reasoning that a fic like that had to exist in some form or another. No, it wasn't perfect, and I didn't really have a ending in mind when it was time to wrap the whole thing up, but hey ho. Live and learn.
Will there be a sequel?
Probably not. With the actual CAH game, it's utterly amazing the first time around, and then with each repeated playthrough, the format and similar cards are less and less funny. The same will apply here if I try and make lightning strike twice. I could do what a few commenters have suggested in giving some retribution to "Doctor Disco", so maybe if a concrete idea around that concept surfaces in my head, I may just give that a shot.
But with Cards out of the way (for now), I had wanted to give writing a break for a while. Catch up on the many, many fics in my Read Later list and try and hone my writing technique further through observation. And then an idea came to me. Spawned, if you can believe it, from what was easily the most evil card I used to close off the 'game' portion of CAE.
We all pretty much know that Applejack's parents are dead in canon. That's almost certain fact.
Here's the thing though. What if they'd lived?
Still needs a Biggest, Blackest Dick in there

...If Applejack's parents were alive, the best way for her to find out would have been if they were listed as endorsers of the game.
"A great game, worth breaking 15 years of silence to say so." - Applejack's Parents.
My mind exploded a little there. Wow.
What's this? Cards is off the Featured Box? Who could have foreseen this!
Also, was it ever confirmed in the canon that her parents are dead or was it just a logical assumption?

Logical assumption, based on some pretty unsubtle symbolism.
