So BABSCon... · 7:51pm Nov 8th, 2014
I know it's kind of a ways off, but I was curious to know who among you are planning to go to BABSCon. I'm not very confident about the fanfic side of things this year, so I figure if we want to represent, we will probably need to get on top of things.
Are any of you planning on trying to host a panel of some sort? Do people want to meet up in a hotel room like we did last year? Should we get a group together and go get some food? Should we stage a coup and storm the main stage, taking the Goldies for ourselves?
It's kind of a strange thing, these cons. Everyone is always waiting for everyone else to get on top of things. I figured I'd try and get the ball rolling. We have a lot of creative, interesting people with informed opinions. It'd be a shame if we couldn't get some great panels out of all that experience.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it back. I did enjoy going and meeting people last time, and I'd still like to get to some pony conventions, but as a practicing Christian, it's a bit hard to deal with an event that's always getting set up over Easter weekend—especially now that I have choir singing responsibilities I really should live up to.
List off the top of my head of fimfic writers who went last year:
You, I, Dusty Pwny, Totallynotabrony, Wintergreen Diaries, Horizon, Bradel, Xepher, Bookish Delight I think, Penstroke, Bronywriter, Chelis, Regidar. I know I'm probably forgetting some peeps.
People who wanted to go last year I think are going this year: Flint Sparks, SKYWRITER!!!
2582225 Yeah, I thought the Easter thing was a little weird. I suspect they are getting a discounted rate because few business want to hold conferences over that holiday. Too bad. I'd have liked to speak with you again.

Any chance of you making it to other conventions?
...if I start feeling bad enough, I might try to go. I could probably be there for some of Friday and Saturday at least. Flying up for just a day and a half of con feels a bit weird, though—and I suspect I might be needed back in Irvine by about 6:00pm Saturday.
2582317 Wait, you live in Irvine?!?!?!? I live in Tustin and Auggie Dog lives in Irvine too! We should hang out!!!
2582323
I know, I know... Grad school makes for hard scheduling, though.

DISREGARD SCHEDULING ACQUIRE PONIES!
2582317 Well, I'd like to go to Bronycon, but I don't really have the dough. I might try to make it to Everfree NW one of these days. It's the most likely other con.
But don't feel guilty. If you can make it, we'll be happy, but real life is way more important.
2582231 Heh. It'd be cool to meet Bookish Delight and Skywriter. I've never read Bookish's stuff, but they seem nice in comments. Talking with Skywriter would be amazing.
2582231 Oh yeah, also, Niaeruzu, Law Abiding Pony, Ocalhoun, Jake the Army Guy (I think)
Yeah, I hope to go this year. My fiancee and I are starting up a plushie business, so we want to get a booth this year at the vendor hall too. I see no reason not to get some panels this year too.
I'm going, and I've had a tab open for the BABSCon "Panel/Activity Application" for like three weeks now. I was meaning to make my own blog post soon about trying to round up some people and get a writing thing together, and you beat me to it!
So yeah, let's do something. I'm dumping MOST of my energy/effort into Everfree, as I'm second in charge of the writing track there. But I'd like to do at least one panel at BABSCon as a warm up... and BABS needs more writing stuff anyway. The question is what and who for a panel. I suspect we'll have more people than we need for a panel, as we've got a lot of "well knowns" coming. I'm kind of trying to think of something a little different to do that can involve more people than a typical panel.
It might be fun to do some sort of game type thing. I'm thinking like a "family feud" thing between two teams, with fanfic and writing topics. Or maybe something like @Midnight (the game show on comedy central) where it's half about being right, and half about making it funny. Another idea would be some sort of bingo, so the audiance could participate more directly and "win" or something.
Anyway, just brainstorming, definitely need to figure out who wants to be involved.

I'm going to include you in this, too, Bradel, since you were unsure. Even if you can't attend, your opinions are valuable.
Just so you guys know, I'm waiting to hear back from Chelis so that I'll know what kind of access to rooms we will realistically have. I'm not sure if he's already got panels lined up or anything yet. I'm going to set up a Gdoc pretty soon and invite all the authors that I'm aware have an interest in attending. If Chelis already has everything booked up, then it's moot, but I figure we could have an open document for us to all list interests, perceived skills, ideas like Xepher's above, that sort of thing.
2583828 As far as Brainstorming goes, I feel we should definitely organize a purple prose contest.

I looked at my money situation, and I strongly suspect I'll be able to go to something this year, but I'm still trying to figure out what. Might be EFNW, might be BronyCon (like I was promising last year).
Definitely interested to stay in the loop on this. I have a hard time imagining I can pull it off, certainly not more than like a fraction of late Friday and early Saturday, but I'm interested to hear what's going on.
2586479 I shall leave the organization to you on this then. While you're talking to 'em, can we get an idea of how much longer we have to apply for panels? I haven't seen any deadlines on the site, but I know everyone tends to leave these things until the last moments.

So I started putting something together, and I wanted to run it by all of you before I start distributing it to a wider audience. I've set it up for everyone to be able to edit, so add to this if you have ideas. Please don't delete, though. If you feel like something is irrelevant or a poor idea, just make a comment. Then we can all discuss it.
Behold! The BABSCon sheet.
Also, I know there is a group for this stuff, but I feel like a discussion can happen more easily through the Gdoc. If we talk in group, relevant posts can disappear as the conversation moves along. With the Gdoc, all the data should stay nicely grouped. Also, that group has had zero activity, so I'm not sure it's the best way to get authors attentions.
2587877 deadlines for panels, music acts, etc. is November 26!
