It's Just More Entertaining · 3:44pm Jun 9th, 2022
You know, after all this time, I'd still rather watch Countess Coloratura sing "The Spectacle" than see Rara perform "The Magic Inside". It's a matter of taste, of course, but to me, the songs and the performance of "The Spectacle" is just off-the-charts more entertaining. I'd much rather see that concert.
Not to throw shade at "The Magic Inside" because I like it, but I'd definitely be bummed if I came to see Countess Coloratura and Rara showed up instead.
Give me more razzle dazzle!
The biggest complaint I have with The Spectacle is that it's not a full song, but only a minute. If it had been a full 3 or so, I think it would been just insane. Also, does anyone get some serious Lady Gaga vibes from it?
I legitimately adore The Spectacle, while I couldn't care less about Magic Inside. It's a good vocal performance, but the song itself does nothing for me. :B

I completely agree. I wish that it had been a full song. And I think it was absolutely based on Lady Gaga.

Yeah, I'd listen to The Spectacle outside of an MLP viewing. It's legitimately entertaining to me. I'd blast that in the car. The Magic Inside is fine, but it just feels like a step down. It's just not as hook-y to me. Also, it feels very plot driven as a song. I feel like it needs the episode around it for it to shine, whereas The Spectacle just rocks by itself.

it also irritates me how damned clever the two songs are as counterpoints :| The Spectacle's last line is "not just a pony: I am the Countess", while the refrain of Magic Inside begins "I am just a pony", like, yes, we get it, you've completed a character arc, you don't have to be so damn smug about it
If that episode hadn't been written by AKR, I think I'd really hate it. <.< Cuz if any writer earned a little gloating privilege, it's her.
I rewatched this episode recently, so a couple of clunky thoughts:
I'm not absolutely 100% on this, but I think I remember Lena Hall herself mentioning (at an online con appearance) that yes, Lady Gaga.
I suppose it's kind of like Bob Dylan going electric, only backwards.
...and now I'm trying to work out what the hay ponies would shout instead of "Judas". Stop it, brain.
Also, good to see you here -- it's been a while! (I sadly managed to miss your "Fimfiction's Autumn" post recently, otherwise I'd have said this there.)

I re-watched it because you had that blog post up. I've just always thought it was odd to have this whole resolved character arc but forgot that Countess Coloratura is an act. Ponies had paid their good bits to see that, and it's very nice that Rara had some personal development, but I just keep thinking how irritated I'd be if the act that I went to see came on stage and said, "Yeah, I've left all that behind. I'm going to do an all- acoustic set." Like, great, but do I get a refund? What about those poor back-up dancers? Just out of a job all of a sudden...
Nitpicking aside, I always did enjoy this episode. I do kinda wish there's been a shot of Sapphire Shores just grinding her teeth in the background somewhere, though.

Ponies have a desperate, gripping fascination with the concept of self-actualization.
