The Rainbow Rocks question · 6:06pm Oct 21st, 2014

Amazon or Walmart?

Here's the issue. Walmart is offering an 'exclusive' edition of the release, which comes with:

A. A digital copy
B. One $4 coupon towards any MLP:FIM toy (at Walmart)
C. A CD, presumably containing the film's soundtrack.

The digital copy is more or less useless: at a guess, it'll be on the VUDU service and I already know the Kindle won't play that. I probably won't get much use out of the coupon: the amount of non-video pony merchandise I own is spectacularly low. But the CD... I could turn that into music tracks and take it on the road -- if the songs justify it.

So my question is for those who saw it in the theater or have already heard the music through means I probably don't want to know about: is it worth spending the extra cash for the Walmart-exclusive version, just to get the CD? (I can't find a soundtrack being sold separately: one may be released eventually, but for now, this is the shot.) Or is this just 'stick with the film' quality and leave it at that? There is a price difference here: $8.01 -- but if the music is travel-worthy, that justifies it.

Purchase opinions welcome.

The music is awesome, over 20 minutes on the soundtrack, including the full version of songs you only here snippets of in the movie.

I saw the movie and enjoyed the music quite a bit, so if it were me, I would get the Walmart one.

You can get the OST off amazon or itunes, I believe and burn it yourself.

But, then I am against giving Walmart money in an capacity if I can help it.

The music is very, very good, but like Seether says there's other ways of getting ahold of it

Where on Amazon? My search engine skills seem to be failing.

I actually don't have an iTunes account. I only have an iTunes gift card which I've never used. Never, ever used. Ever. For anything...

ETA: Just checked iTunes. $9.90 for the soundtrack there, but the gift card covers that with room to spare. Not sure about Kindle compatibility. I don't trust Corporate America to cooperate.

Absolutely get the soundtrack if you can. Tricks up my Sleeve is absolutely the best song, but alas is barely in the film. The soundtrack though has the full wonderful version.

The music in the first movie was completely forgettable, but the music in Rainbow Rocks is actually very good. I like about half album which is pretty good considering.

As for paying extra, are you someone who always actually pays for music? There are multiple ways to get if for free like ripping from Youtube, or simply using BitTorrent.

You can always use a Youtube-mp3 converter. The music's pretty good, but I don't think it's worth an extra eight bucks.

That is, if you can live with being a pirate.

My bad. It appears to only be on iTunes. Now, if you have a gift card this may be a reason to make an account.

I am... defensive when it comes to artist copyrights. I won't criticize those who seek out the free road, but I generally only look for free when the pay-for copy doesn't exist, and replace it as soon as I can.

Basically, if I know something will be available in the States within a year, I'll wait. If it's a case of No Release/Export For You, then I start hunting. (And inevitably fail.)

You can find the soundtrack for free on Soundcloud. The user PoniesInLanguages has it in a playlist.

Fair enough. I know so many people my age that do pirate without a thought that it's kind of become a normalcy to me.

With that being said I would go ahead with Wallmart then. The Dazzlings' songs actually sound like a real song to me (although a bit short). The only real downside to the soundtrack is it's only about 25 minutes long with around 12 songs if I'm remembering correctly.

you could listen to it yourself and then decide whether or not to buy it. I'm not sure if this is the whole thing, but you can hear at least part of it here

It really depends. The songs are rather short ( 2547604 It's actually ten songs; they didn't include the bad counterspell, the rap, or the heavy metal segment, and instead they added in the Vinyl Scratch dubstep thing from the shorts) and on that basis alone, I'm not sure they justify the cost. On the other hand, they are pretty good for the most part (especially the Dazzlings' two and a half songs) and if you don't want to pirate them then that seems to be your best bet. Idunno, up to you.

iTunes's version should be DRM free, and bluntly, if you buy it and can't Mp3 it, at that point you're perfectly entitled (in my eyes, at least), to go find an Mp3 version and grab it, since you actually have paid for the music, if not in the format you want.

At this point, I think I'm going to order the Blu-Ray version off Amazon (because I want the commentary track), listen to the music on Soundcloud and, if I like it, buy the soundtrack from iTunes using the gift card. Sample before purchase, basically.

Thanks. That makes things a lot easier.

For what it's worth, I have had absolutely zero trouble using iTunes itself to convert from its native m4a to mp3. I know it may be viewed as the lesser of two evils by some, but I'd prefer Apple get my money than Walmart. Just a personal feeling, though.

There is a YouTube soundtrack that contains the full version of Trixie's song without the talking. Same with all other interrupted songs. You can also find a YouTube to MP3 converter via google.
