Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Stepping Down from Fanfic Writing; Focusing on Life, Career, Game Dev

This blog post might not come as any surprise given the last new chapter of anything I posted was a year ago. I meandered away from the site for some time, unsure if I would feel like coming back. I'm making this blog post because I'm pretty sure now at this point I won't want to write ponyfic any time soon. I really regret leaving A Darkened Land unfinished, since I did truly enjoy writing quite

    An Update

After being silent so long I guess I should start by saying this isn't a gloom and doom type blogpost, heh.

Unpopular Opinion #6: Learning Theory Can Kill You

Okay, maybe "kill you" is a bit overdramatic, but "clickbait" is sort of a theme of these blog posts' titles anyway so yeah.

I recently came back from Bronycan where I spoke on 3 separate hour-long writing panels. I got some pretty good words of encouragement from people saying they learned something, and actually in talking that much about writing I felt I learned something too.

My Slow Writing and Life Update

I'm 4th year University student studying Computer Science. I'm into writing, art, programming, and game development. I tend to plan far in advance for the future, and previously I've mentioned A Darkened Land will likely be my last novel length fic.

    Bronycan Details

Hey there! So I'm all set for Bronycan and they've got the schedule up on their website.

In a surprise turn of events, the coordinator approved of all of our panels! That means I'll be sitting in as a panelist on 3 of the 4 writing panels our little group is organizing. Here's the times/topics for all four:

    Friday:

Soundslikeponies: The Roadmap · 6:02am Sep 17th, 2014

All descriptions/ratings/cover art subject and likely to change.

Most likely my next to be published story, Darkquestria, is currently sitting at 18,000 words. I'm planning on posting it in 'arcs' with stuttered releases. Working on it in arcs gives me the best balance of both worlds, being able to post chapters before I finish the story while also being able to go back and edit earlier chapters when necessary. By choosing certain 'break points' I can be sure that while writing 'Arc 2' I won't need to change something back in 'Arc 1'. The reason for stuttered chapter releases is part exposure, part keeping a steady stream of new content.

So far the first arc is 18,000 words with me in the middle of writing chapter 5 of 7.

O Siren, O Seapony is a one-shot of three parts that may manage to come out before Darkquestria. The story is currently 9,500 words as I write chapter 2 of 3. The story is largely filled with song, adventure, and overly romanticized romance. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but as my first entirely OC fic, it's so far looking quite good. It has straight shipping, too, if any of you are sick of ponies being in lesbians with each other.

But don't worry if you still like ponies being in lesbians! Because I've got just the thing coming for you...

So far there's 0 words down on this fic, but it's something I've planned on writing for a while. If George R.R. Martin describes Game of Thrones as 'Sopranos meets middle earth', then I'd describe this as 'Dash Academy meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower'. The plan is to go back to my roots in a 'written by the seat of my pants long, multichapter romance drama'. Also from what I see Twi-de-Lis is a non-existant ship. I'm gonna see if I can change that.

I haven't entirely decided whether I write this before or after...

Also 0 words. Can't quite make up my mind whether to make this a one-shot or a short novel/novella ~40k words. I've recently been on a lovecraft binge, and being someone who reads closely, I believe I've gotten a pretty good sense for how to instill a sense of dread/horror. This is likely to be a bit similar to The Devil's Trick in tone/atmosphere, but most likely better/longer/more original.

So that's basically my 'to do' list. I'm hoping to get either O Siren, O Seapony or Darkquestria out by next month if possible. Sorry to anyone who was looking forward to Fluttershy's House of Villains updates, but I mostly created the story as something whose chapters were fairly stand-alone, giving me something I don't feel pressured to update that serves as an outlet when I feel like writing something slightly more silly. I'll probably get chapter 2 of it out after I publish Darkquestria/O Siren, O Seapony. I'll probably finish it up to 4 chapters and wrap it up while I work on Arc 2 of Darkquestria, before I get started on the other two stories in this post.

After all these? I don't know. There's a decent chance I may retire from pone fic. Maybe if I still have the spark at the end of all this I'll write something new, but I'll probably be looking to real life things, either heading into the game development world or starting some original fiction. When I do eventually leave, I plan to wrap all my stories up 'complete' and bow out.

Or I could write a spiel about the death of the fandom and the show's deterioration... y'know, if you folks could use something to talk about.

Fuck, I really fucking like writing about Twilight, don't I?

Twilight is best pony!

...not really, but she's still a fun character :derpytongue2:
Also, that first one is quite interesting. Feels like a different take on the Eternal Night thing, simply because both princesses are gone.

You may like writing about Twilight, but I like reading as much as she does.

And the first and forth stories presented have already taken my attention as well.

Best of luck while writing them all though!

I can't wait for darkquestria. :)

Hey, if you do bow out. Leave us a forwarding address will ya. To many just up and disappear, but I enjoy your stories so why wouldn't I enjoy something you wrote that is non-pony. Pretty sure thats mostly what we had to read before MLP fanfiction showed up :P
