Crossover Ideas Stuck in my Head · 6:59pm Sep 3rd, 2014
Crossovers. Love em, or hate em, there's no doubt that they are abundant in the land of fanfiction. I have enjoyed more than a few of them that have been published on this site myself, Loyal2Luna's works crossing Mass Effect with My Little Pony standing out in my mind particularly strongly. And, naturally, I've had more than a few crossover ideas myself, a few of which I'd like to share with you all now.
Futurama
This one's been kicking around in my head for a little while now. The basic idea on this one is less of two separate worlds meeting, but integrating Equestria into the Futurama universe. I've decided to use the existence of the show itself as the basis for that, with Mom from Mom's Friendly Robot Company as the man antagonist. The thought is that she discovered the old episodes, and decided to bring the show back (edited somewhat to fit her views on the world) and revive the Brony fandom. And to top it off, she re-creates Equestria on a planet her company happens to own, with the intention to use it as a theme park kind of deal. Naturally, the planet express crew gets involved and shenanigans ensue.
I've been picking at this one on and off between other projects. But translating the kind of rapid fire dialogue and situations of the show to prose has felt distinctly....odd, to say the least.
Redwall
Brian Jacques book series about anthropomorphic woodland critters and the abbey they live in is one of those book series I grew up reading. And while the series kind of died off for me after book four, Salamandastron, it's still a classic read in my mind. The idea for a crossover here, largely comes down to an image that's seared in my head, of Pinkie Pie peering over the edge of the abbey walls with a big old grin on her face.
See, what would make this crossover interesting, I think, would be the question of size. In the world of Redwall, size is somewhat...relative. In the first book, the villainous rat that was laying siege to Redwall snuck his army along in a haycart pulled by a horse, and was supposedly from Portugal, hinting that it took place in the human world, somehow.
While that was ditched in later books, things like snakes, swans, river pike and other creatures were still in proportional size to the heroic mice and such, which would make the Mane Six truly kaiju-esq and that could be fun to play with.
The World of Darkness
Classic World of Darkness, that is. See, canonically, the original world of vampires, werewolves and mages came to an end, when White Wolf published a collection of books detailing those end of the world scenarios. The ancient vampires awoke, the mages ascended to a higher plane of being and the werewolves went down swinging against their mortal enemies.
But what if some of the powerful spirits had survived after the end? What if they took the shattered remains of the world, and started over, this time aiming to create a world that wouldn't fall into the same traps as the old, using what creatures still lived as their templates for the new forms of life? And thusly, Equestria is born from the ashes of Earth.
And into this, a fledgeling vampire who fell into torpor before the end, awakening to find a world that doesn't make sense anymore, only adding to the strain of trying to hang onto her humanity. And the final twist? Pony blood is addictive, each drink rekindling emotions dulled from the process of becoming a vampire. The story would very much be about her attempts to find a way out of her nightmare existence before she went over the edge, or Princess Celestia incinerated her.
I have been picking at some of these when I've had the chance, and there is a chance that one of them will be getting uploaded in the next few weeks here. Though, which one, I think I'm going to leave as a surprise.
That being said, are there any crossovers you, my followers, have always wanted to see, but no one has written yet? I imagine there have to be a few out there.
I've probably mentioned to you that I have the barest skeleton of a crossover with the Matrix somewhere on my to-write list. I don't know much about Matrix lore, but the story premise allows quite a bit of leeway. Other than that, I'm not sure how many worlds I'd feel comfortable writing about.
Hmm, there aren't many that really come to mind off the top of my head. Slayers would be an interesting one and with a quick search only reveals on result. Sorceress supreme vs the Element of Magic is just a setup for hilarity. Or even having her still being beaten out in chest size by ponies.

The Matrix does give you a bit of freedom to play with it. I mean, the underlying concept behind The Matrix is something that can fuel some really good stories, even separated from the events of the movies.
I do know what you mean about being comfortable with universes though. To do a good crossover, you really kind of have to know its characters and situations to make it all flow and click together.

Ahh! Slayers! Now that's a classic Anime from my past. Though Lina really isn't all that flat chested! Compared to normal women she's...well...normal sized.
2425166 Normal women exist in the Slayers universe?
Anyway, I particularly like your first two ideas involving futurama and Redwall. And about the later - I can't help but think:
"It's Pinkijira! Run! Or the party cake will smother us all!"
"Fun! Fun! Fun! Funfunfunfunfunfunfun!"
You already know about my secret crossover project, so no telling! I want to spring it on the world and hopefully it will become very popular so I can rub it in Bookish Delight's face even though she hasn't done anything to deserve that.
