Headcanon dump! · 4:10am Aug 23rd, 2014
So I never really feel like writing anything, but I do spend lots of time developing my headcanons. So I decided to share this in a blog post. Yeah.
Celestia is super powerful because she draws on the energy of the sun. She can access the massive energy it produces and use it as magic. That's enough to make her pretty damn stronk. Then Luna uses the energy of the night sky: she can use all those stars as power! But... would that would make her way waaaaay more powerful than Celestia? No, not really. She can access them all but the are all soooo much farther away, and it only traces of their magic are accessible at once (another way I thought of it, if there are any Elder Scrolls fans reading, is like Aedra VS Daedra, specifically Devines VS Daedric Princes. The Aedra are actually less powerful, but their realm is closer, so they can exert more influence than the Daedra, whose realm is farther away). So, the most powerful single object that Luna draws power from actually ends up being the moon. Now we all know that moonlight is just reflected sunlight, but something about the way it reflects the light would make it different, and stop Celestia from using, while empowering Luna to do so. Also something like the moon stores the converted sunlight-magic as a property of the rock. Fun thing about this system is you can basically gauge the power of the celestial energy sources by their brightness, and also it makes Luna's magic more various, as it comes from more sources. I imagine Luna, while not having the brute magic force to equal her sister, would be more skilled in the wider arts of magic.
Further developing this headcanon, Nightmare Moon is more powerful than regular Luna because either (I haven't decided which I like better)
1: in this form, Luna's mind drifts farther into the darkness of space, allowing her to gather more energy from the distant stars, but making her thoughts more selfish as she drifts away from the world and morals, and more foreign as she drifts closer among the strange stars and is more bent to their influence.
OR 2: in this form, Luna is able to harness the magic of darkness, giving her much more power to draw from and making her want eternal night so that it stays dark.
Also, while less developed, I had some thoughts for a Nightmare Moon equivalent for Celestia. I'm no good at names, but it would be something to do with Eclipse, which is when the form would take her. At every solar eclipse, the main light energy of the sun is blocked, and the corona becomes visible. The energy of the sun that Celestia normally uses has a sort of Lawful Good alignment, and this normally overpowers the corona, which is darker, corresponding to darker thoughts of Celestia that are normally overpowered, but would take over during an eclipse. So in Eclipse Sun (works for now) form, Celestia would act as though she was under the influence of the Alicorn Amulet, but would be weakened. Again, not quite as solidly developed, but the starts of a Celestia version of Nightmare Moon.
That's all for this entry! Hope you liked it, and I hope this can help inspire someone!
