IMO, Human In Equestria stories only work if the human in question has an interesting personality. If he's just a blank, then the story is pointless. The best HiE story I ever read was My Little Balladeer, in which both the humans had strong, epic personalities (one for good, and one for evil), and the hero had strong ties with Earth and wanted to go back home. Stories about people who have no lives whatsoever going to fantasy worlds and being worshipped by the inhabitants are just plain stupid.

Yeah... That whole "Anon" character thing is one I do not understand in the slightest.

BronyHuman in Equestria? Fine. At least they actually have names and faces.

OC Ponies? Fine. Again, names and faces.

Second Person, aka "You"? Yeah, when you give "You" an actual character, name, face, and gender (bonus points if male!), then "You" are not an insert.

Anon? ...Really? It's so pointless and confusing. It's supposed to be anyone and everyone. Yet, they all have personalities, are pretty much guys, and are self-inserts to be with their favourite pony(ies). Why not just write them as a self-insert, then? At least there it's not bullshit! Why do they have to be Anon? For a reader to insert themselves into? I'm not an expert on writing in that style, but I have a feeling it doesn't quite work that way.

2393558 I feel like anon is the new "you" form of stories. They are meant to try and make it so YOU AS THE READER see yourself in the story as the main character. One of those they are trying to make YOU the character 100%, not just seeing in their eyes. The fact that they are mostly in romance/mature stories makes it sexy creepy.

2394719 That's pretty much what it is, all right! The "Anon" stories are the new Second Person stories. They're meant to cater to YOUR fantasies, to be with YOUR favourite pon(ies)y, in YOUR favourite part of Equestria with YOUR favourite characters.

I feel that the less attempts to make the audience surrogate "You", the more easier it is to connect with it. I don't like Brony Human in Equestria stories, but at least there's a lot more to idenity with. Even if the character isn't you, there's still something to understand, to feel close to, and to feel like, yeah, that could be you! They do a better job at "You" being there without even trying to make it you! It's in the inspiration that it could be you that makes it effective in that regard, not the blatant factor that it is you.

Hannah Montana, all Acceptable Target elements aside, plays that very well. Yes, HM is indeed the alter ego persona of the main character. She has the definitive fact that she's her. But at the same time, the series markets that in the way that Hannah Montana is also YOU. Without actually being you. The implication is what sells it.

So really, when I see "Anon" or "You, I don't feel like that could be me, I feel like there's bullshit all over it and like there's a character there, even though it should be me. But it's not. It just doesn't capture the feeling that it's you in this world.

And yeah... usually it's for romance purposes. Harmless, yeah, but I wish they were more self-aware and honest about it. There's really no need to bullshit.
