I've had the chance to work with some brilliant/insane authors lately, so I guess we'll start there. When I first started proofreading, I had the very strange delusion of being some sort of teacher. I wasn't very open-minded to what was being said by the author, and my main focus was on what I had to say. Luckily, I was finally humbled when mistakes began to appear in my 'lectures' which I couldn't justify, or ignore. When the teacher mentality broke down, I found that the people I had the good fortune of working with actually gave some very interesting advice (sometimes unintentionally). Realistically, any improvement between chapters of FQaC is due to the proofreading process that I've become so accustomed to, and the advice I've picked up because of it. So, if you crazies find any sort of moral in my rambling it should be this: LISTEN! Even if you're Shakespeare reincarnated, its still important to shut yourself up every once in a while and just listen. For all you know, someone might say something so influential, that you'll rewrite your entire story and then leave the proofreaders to work on it in the sweatshop without any bathroom breaks! You Czech bastard...
