Weirdly enough, this happened to me (sort of) in another fandom that I frequently play in; that of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Specifically, at a forum run by an online buddy of mine in the fandom named Tigerfog, who is the artist/writer of a most excellent TMNT fan-comic called Mutant Ninja Turtles Gaiden, which is set about 17 into the future of the TMNT. While basically based in Volume 1 of the Mirage Studios TMNT comics (and before, during and after the City at War story-arc), the art-style itself is drawn from the 2003-2009 Ninja Turtles cartoon series from 4Kids Entertainment, and concerns the lives of the Turtles (who are now around the age of 34), April and Casey Jones (who are now married), their adopted daughter, Shadow; etc; after Splinter dies as the result of a cursed sword that someone sent to the members of Clan Hamato, which causes the brothers to go their separate ways.

And Donatello to go nuts, thinking that what happened (their father's death and all the resulting events after that) is all a big fake reality.

It also introduces a fifth Mutant Turtle with mysterious origins, a teenager (who's about the age that they other guys were when this all started; 17 years old) by the name of "Renoir" (given to him by Raphael, who is his Master and Sensei), who's slowly blending into the group. (Albeit reluctantly at times.)

(It's easier to read it from the start of the Prologue on, though. That way, everything will make sense.)

Anyway, back to the "avatar scaring people" thing.........

Anyway, the site for MNT Gaiden also has a forum (courtesy of Tiger being its webmaster/creator), and, as with any forum, you can, of course, have avatars and signature pics.

The problem that I ran into a few years ago was that I had posted a kinda/sorta Valentine's picture of Raphael posed somewhat sexily (what? He's my fave Turtle), and I thought that it looked really cool, and everyone else on the boards were okay with it.

(I'll post a pic of it later, if y'all would like to see it, to judge if it was "scary" or not. Anyway, on to the explanation.)

Like I said above, everyone on the forum was okay with it (including Tiger), and told me that it was really cool and nice.

Well, except, much to my surprise, for one member of the forum.

What happened was, I had only been using that Raph siggy-pic for a day or two, when, to my surprise, I received a PM from said member.

Naturally, I was curious to see what she wanted, so I went to my forum inbox and opened it. Well, you can pretty much imagine my shock when she asked me to take it down and replace it because it was too scary, and was causing her to have panic attacks!

Needless to say, I was totally flabbergasted, and wasn't sure what to think. So I posted a thread in the forum asking if my Raph signature-pic was "too scary", and asking for opinions.

Well, you can imagine the response. pretty much everyone who answered me said, "no", it wasn't. (I think at least one of them was in the same vein (if not the exact same words) as Pinkie's "Oatmeal?! Are you crazy?!" comment from the Ticket Master episode from Season 1.)

Even Tiger, as the forum's Admin, weighed in and told me that the pic was fine, and I didn't have to remove/replace it unless, and until, I wanted to. So I just left it where it was, thinking that that was the end of it.

Needless to say, it wasn't.

This member just kept PMing me (nicely at first, I'll have to admit), asking that I remove/replace it immediately, saying that it was causing her panic attacks to get worse and worse. Naturally, I said "no" again, saying that unless I had clear proof of her claims, I wan't changing my siggy-pic, as I flat-out refused to believe that a pic of Hamato Raphael, Master of the twin sai, and the Turtle team's resident hot-head, laying down in a "come hither" sexy pose was in any way "scary" enough to give anyone panic attacks!

Eventually, she went to the extreme tactic of out-right demanding that I replace it, due to it, in her words, "making my panic attacks so bad that my mom's having to take me to the doctor for them".

Again, I told her that I wasn't trying to be unreasonable, or mean/cruel, but "no", I wasn't replacing it just because she was making the demand for me to.

Don't get me wrong; I respect people that that does happen to, and I was doing my very best to be patient and sympathetic with this person, and work with her, but she just would not be reasonable and work with me on the issue! It was basically a case of "My way or the highway!" with her.

Finally, she just told me that since I wouldn't listen to her and replace my Raph pic when she wanted me to, she would just leave the forum til I decided to "be reasonable" (and give in to her demand, basically), and that I should let her know when I had replaced the "uber-scary, panic attack-causing picture", as she put it, and she'd come back.

Needless to say, though I greatly regretted what had happened, I didn't change said pic for quite a long time afterwards.

And since I haven't been back to the "Obscure Zodic"/MNT Gaiden forums since I fell (happily) into the MLP: FiM show and fandom back in the latter part of Season 1 in 2011, I don't really know if she'd back there, or not. Need to go check and see one of these days, though, I guess.........

Although I wonder what would happen if I used my Mirror-Verse Outlaw Applejack over there like I do here, and she saw it?

(Probably tell me that it was "too scary", and we'd wind up going through the whole danged thing again.)
