I write pony words. Millions of them. Some people actually think they might be worth reading. I am very thankful for that. Also, I have a Patreon now?

    So I asked Gemini AI...

To summarize the story TD the Alicorn Princess. The result I got was... interesting.

    1. Fimfiction story: This story involves Peter Westmoore, a responsible college student, who is transported to the magical land of Equis and transformed into an alicorn princess named TD. He faces challenges adapting to his new life and ruling his nation.

    So...

As many of you well know, I'm a father of three. A four-year-old, a two-year-old, and a one-year-old. It's pretty great. Can be difficult, but overall a pretty big blessing. How my wife takes care of three kids five days a week is beyond me, as I have a hard time taking care of them two days a week when my wife goes off to work.

    So yeah...

    Editing help

Yes, I'm calling out for editors again. I want to submit a story to the Cozy Glow contest, and I want to make sure that the story I just wrote for it is good, or "wow, that's a jumbled mess of ideas, far too mean, and the ending is terrible."

Let me know if you'd like to help. Any extra eyes would be highly appreciated.

    I totally forgot

To mark this as a "sequel" to the original story. So, if you're in the mood for more TD/Comet...

A published novel? Hmm... · 8:51pm Jun 22nd, 2014

You read the title right. Now, I know that TD the Alicorn Princess is nowhere near done. We still have a looonnng way to go with it, but how would you all like it if I cut it off a few chapters from now and published it as a Part I? I'd obviously still continue it on Fimfiction, but in terms of a printed novel, I could sell it as Part I. Yes, printed hardcover a la Past Sins, Fallout: Equestria, Flight of the Alicorn, etc.

Now, I know that many of you following me have been waiting for a Secret Life of Rarity hardcover novel, and I still want to do that! This would be good practice for that even. It's just that TD Alicorn is way closer to where I'd feel comfortable publishing it, and my editors have gone dark with that. All of them. Not only that, but I have an artist who has agreed to do things like cover art and chapter art. This artist, in fact.

Now, obviously if I'd sell Part I, I'd sell Parts II and III and IV (if it got that far, though really, this is going to be a long story) and so on.

So, what do you all think?

Oh, and as a final note, I'd like to say how awesome you guys all are and how honored I am that you follow me. I recently made it on the top ten most followed authors on the site. You guys rock! I'm so honored that you enjoy the silly horse words that I write.

Doesn't that kinda go against copy right laws and stuff? (I'm not against the idea but this has just been nagging at me) What I mean is by Hasbro(DHX) standards, you're using their universe, their characters (Save for T.D.) and selling it to make profit? Unless you were to get permission and split the some of the doe with Hasbro(DHX), wouldn't that technically be illegal?

(Again, I'm not against the idea I think it would be nice.)

Out of curiosity, how does one make a hardcover book out of something they've written?

Like send it to a publishing agency, or something? :rainbowhuh:

2226640 Well again, Past Sins, FO:E, and Flight of the Alicorn pulled it off. I'd do it like they did.

Gotta pay for my wedding somehow...

2226642 There are sites that'll do it for you.

I would buy it definitely !

2226651 Well I'll wish luck upon friend, just be careful that is all.

Idk man, td the alicorn princess is a lot of fun , but it is by far one of your more unsure stories. Before i go further, i do wanna say i love the story, it is very entertaining, but it feels very much like it doesnt know where it's going. It took 200k words for what i think is the main external conflict to appear. Like I said it's a very fun read. But it doesn't know where it's going. In contrast, the secret life of rarity is very sure of itself from the beggining with a very solid plot structure. Again td the alicorn princess is a very fun read. But i think your number one story in terms of a novel like plot is the secret life of rarity. Which i'd very likely buy, if i bout the alicorn princess though, it'd be mainly because i'm a fan trying to help support you, rather than i feel it's a good novel. Just my $.02

2226735 It's not that it's unsure of itself, it's that it's a vignette style story with several different arcs. The Secret Life of Rarity could be a movie. TD Alicorn would be a TV show.

2226640
It does.
Not only could he get sued (as a worst-case scenario, depending on how much he would make) or get hit with legal troubles (best-case scenario, C&D), it's ethically wrong, too.

The first story has a good amount of backstory, but there seems to be a couple years between it and the beginning of TD the Alicorn Princess that is still untold (assuming each season of show canon is about a year.) I feel it would lose something without the events of the first story backing it up, one notable thing I can name offhand is TD's habit of punching royalty, or more specifically Celestia.

2226788 Again, Past Sins pulled it off.

I'm really glad to know that the Alicorn Princess story will be going on for a long time.

I noticed that most of the stories I look forward to updating are your stories. This is both good and bad. It's good because it means that by my standards, you are a very good writer, enough that I'm eagerly waiting for several of your stories to update. It's bad because most of the stories I'm waiting on are just from one person and so if you can't update for some reason or other or decide not to write anymore then most of my favorites on fimfiction won't be updated :raritycry:.

2226796
And they were lucky (read: lucky) to do so. And by that, I mean get away with it.

Also, Hasbro and DHX are beginning to take a closer look at the fandom: something new, like your plan, would be scented in a heartbeat.

Besides, even if you did get away with selling fanfiction, it's still ethically wrong.

If you wrote an original story, in an original setting, that had the same sort of story premise? Great! Go for it.

(And not just change a few names around, etcetera, like the Twilight fan-fiction that became 50 Shades was).

But as it stands, you'd be selling MLP material.

Publishing a book? Hang on, let me consult the internet for the opinion on this.

HELL YEAH! I would be the first in line to buy this book!

Still, be careful about this. While I'm all for the idea, I don't want you getting into legal trouble over it. That would suck if you got a C&D due to this, which seems likely considering how Hasbro has been coming down harder on fan material as of late.

2226651 Past Sins only asked for payment that covered the price of printing. They got away with it because it no profit was manufactured from the venture. Not sure about FO: E in that respect.

2226892 Yeah, and I think that I'd be doing much the same thing, really. I get that I'd just really be covering printing costs. I know that I'd like to get my wedding paid for and all, but I realize that this would be a small way to do that, if at all.

Still, I think it would be cool if nothing else. But yeah, I'd be doing the same thing, really.

It's only legal if you don't make any profit. If you make so much as a penny from the sale of ponies you open yourself up to legal action. If anyone at Hasbro is made aware of someone making a profit from copyrighted material they are legally obligated to pursue compensation. That means even if they only sue you for the 1¢ you made; you are still going to get hit with legal fees and court costs, starting at around $5,000.00

Now, that being said, they seem to have no problem with non-profit printing. If you charge the exact amount it takes to print the number of copies you sell, then you're good. And if you do decide on this path, I'd jump on that faster than you could blink.

I'd also request you include the entire storyline from TD's arrival to present.

I think it would be great, but sadly I don't have any disposable income

also, I'd probably put Not a Brony as part 1, since that is kinda necessary for understanding what's happened to get him there

If you're going to try this, Bronywriter, you're going to need to make sure you post the amounts you pay for the printings online, possibly with a copy of the receipts (with strategic parts blacked out). Also, keep in mind that even at zero profit, every printing of something like this is a bit like playing Russian Roulette. Hasbro has been keeping a closer eye on things, so you don't want to draw their eye to fimfiction- all fanfiction is technically illegal in America, and it exists merely because it is mostly harmless. The second it starts veering into printed territory, things get murkier, and scarier, even if no profit is involved. (And there had better be no profit, because that just hits all kinds of issues, legal and ethical)

2226651

If you want to go ahead and publish the TD stuff, stick with official channels. I believe Amazon has an agreement with Hasbro for fan fiction on Kindle Worlds, so you could check into that.

Now, opinion time:

If I were going to publish a novel, I'd want it to be all my own IP, with characters, places and situations exclusively mine to toy with. I wouldn't want my readers coming in with preconceived notions. So for now, that would pretty much rule out my wanting to publish things like Star Trek, Star Wars, D&D/NWN, Warhammer/40K, Harry Potter, or MLP stories. But say I write one or more of these in the future and change my mind about my "old" publishing preferences? I would look into posting them in their entirety online free of charge while having them available for purchase (I haven't read the full agreement for Kindle Worlds). I'm pretty sure that if my work was good, people would still buy it. The DVD copies of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog I keep seeing restocked in-store are sure indication of this.

And if you are going to sell a physical copy, please wait until the entire thing is completed. My shelf space is at a premium these days. :twilightblush:

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Go for it! :pinkiehappy:

Editors gone dark as in don't answer when you ask about novel making or as in don't respond at all?

2227986 As in they edited a few chapters then stopped for some reason.

2228493 Well, want me as another? I have previous experience and don't get to pissy too easily. Unless people misuse Early Modern English. Uh. Heh. *scratches neck awkwardly*

Edit: Derped and double posted. Deleted the first.

Quick question... even if you did make a hardcover book for any of these, where would you sell them? I mean, I don’t really see myself walking into the children's section in Barnes and Nobles and picking up the Secret Life of Rarity, or any of the Nonbrony series for that matter. If you actually put 'nonbrony in Equestria' and 'The Wanderings' and 'The life of a nonbrony' into one novel, I'd buy it. No hesitation. Same for the Secret life of Rarity. But how and where exactly would you sell it?

Does anyone here have a full list of all the published fanfics they could PM me? I'd like to get them all.

2236674 I think just Past Sins, Flight of the Alicorn and Fallout: Equestria.
