Depends on whose orphans. The flock looks after its own. Those outside the flock have others who will look after them.
Again to Sparkler: yes, it´s very clear you know that there are limits to what you can do, and you made a brave thing saving those two. But foals WILL come to you, pledging, begging for help. Are you ready to say no to then ?

To...whoever can best answer it. What exactly did the sweeps entail? Or more plainly, what happened during one? Did the ponies responsible for carrying them out just kick down doors and grab any foal they could find, or was it less brutal in execution (though the sweeps were brutal no matter how you look at them, of course.)?

Author: Very similar to what happened in Ireland and Scotland long ago.
They would go through, round up every foal they could find, leave behind the weakest and sickliest, a few healthy ones, and then take the majority.
And look the shithole sort of place the Isles are too. Makes it so much easier to do when you justify it as "saving the foals" and doing the right thing. It comes off as an act of charity.
To anypony who wants to answer: If there were one for you, what would your element of harmony be? (Not necessarily restricted to the canon 6.)

2212758 Then let me revise it. After reading the last few chapters I'm more interested in Dinky and pina's answer (especially pina). As well as Bucky's take on Celestia's reaction.
I know this will be a seriously unpleasant question; but after reading a few other responses i just want to know...something. During the summer months the nights are cold, bitterly so, and a family was stuck having to use a marriage to get food. During the winter months the cold would be brutal. Food would be even more scarce, and more necessary. Were there any families that had to pass foals to the sweep instead of having to watch them starve to death? -Note- the sweeps still are completely wrong -End-Note-, but where does the line in the ground stand? Families are so important, but what do they do when it's death or permanent separation? .....eugh.....sucky-crappy-horrible situation.
