Site Post » PSA: Posting Large Images · 1:40pm Jun 1st, 2012
Just a quick little announcement here.
Please do not post excessively large images in comments. I think a maximum of about 600 x 600 will be reasonable. First offence will just be a warning but further breaking of the rule will result in bans because it's extremely annoying.
Please also refrain from completely pointlessly using images when they don't add anything to the discussion. I have images enabled because they do have some legitimate use, but I can turn them off if I feel the need be.
Thanks!
Thank you!
So why not code in a limit?
Yeah that's fair.
600 is being thankful enough. I think I broke dat rule somewhere, but I'll stop.
Also, please dont turn off the pictures. I love it when I get them, as I discover more gifs to take for myself.

Because doing that with external images isn't entirely trivial? The issue isn't the size client side, but having a 4k x 4k image resized on the client is slow, and wastes tons of bandwidth. They already scale to fit their containers (or at least they should, Firefox seems to be a bitch about it)
147067 And that is why Google chrome is mein freund.
Google: Because Firefox is a bitch about everything.
147067 Yeah I suppose. I just finished an introductory programming subject this semester, so I guess I should have realised that a lot of features that seem easy to implement when you first think of them, are not trivial at all when you go to actually do it.
To be honest the only reason I commented so quickly was so I could be at the top. Oh sh*t, yo gunna ban me now for being one of the 'first'.
I feel like Knighty's blog should be forced on everyone. So many valuable lessons can be learned from it... and I'm tired of explaining things to 800 people. For example when authors get proud of getting featured again and ask how I've just started directing them to the chat
147074 Yet you aint.
I agree with this as large pictures tend to screw up my loading time. Firefox user here btw.
By all means I plan to follow this rule and I'm even thankful for it, but I'm curious: although perhaps a tad time consuming to make code for, wouldn't it be beneficial to have a file-compressor-thing like with the cover images? Not everyone has a clue as to what a 600x600 image looks like.
For demonstration purposes, this is a 600x600 image. Altough, I'd say 600x600 is a bit big itself. Maybe 500x500 is better.

Does this new rule apply only to universal blog posts, or to stories and private blog comments, as well?
Thank you! If I had a nickel for every time someone added a shitty pointless image to the comments, I'd have like, 10 quarters. That's how many I see, so good news!
Right click on picture > View Image Info > Dimensions: 792px × 773px
So I'm going to assume that this rule doesn't apply to the original post.
NO! You're messing with Arthur Freedom's brother! Artie's Freedom!
147090
fine by me. I only post { 300-500X300-500 } anyways.
back to the grind.
This is why I don't like you. Every rule you have in place is 'because it's annoying'.
147074 Dear sweet Celestia that is tiny! Good thing you can reverse it in Microsoft Word.
Can we get rid of all the 'dis gunna be good' images while we are at it? They don't add anything to the conversation.
147100
Isn't that a good reason to prohibit something then?
yet people over use emitocons! MOAR BANS
147107 No, not at all! Unless it's a problem that's illegal or rude, etc. then it shouldn't be a rule! He's making rules based off of his own opinions. Now on the random images, however, I agree with him.
147110
The random image thing is the part I like. The other thing I don't care about honestly.
Comments =/= Blog posts
The guy is not being a hypercrit.
As for the super important blog posts, why can't you make it so it shows up on everyone's notifications bar?
Make the posts distinguished so the bar turns blue or something.
Or make it persistently annoying as in 'HEY. LISTEN. HEY. HEY' until people read it to get rid of it.
147106 In a sense, they kinda do.
Even if the viewer didnt read the story yet, they can feel that it will meet more of their expectations, thus, a "Dis gun be guud" pic is found.
Also, Digimon for the win. I see your name. XD
This is a good idea. I can see large images being a problem for slower computers.
147077 Google FTW.
It's only because it's alot easier on the ol' compooper, so yush, nothin on you. XD
Good idea next time, how about a fic limit of 5 that the user can submit? [/Sarcasm]
147110 I agree with you, we should join forces.
I say hooray to this. You have no idea how much lag those huge-ass images have given me.
147095 Well played, sir
I'm waiting for that awkward moment when someone posts an image on this blog that is over the maximum size...
Damn it, I'm going to have to check the size of pics now.
*Insert rant here*
sometimes a large pic is a good thing in my comments, but only when it's something like terrain or a structure of some sorts. random memes or internet folly are quite annoying when they're that big. I think there should be a system to regulate what is good and not, of course this would be time consuming but just a suggestion
I like this new rule, unless...
*checks meme library*
Nope, all of mine are small enough Yeah, my library isn't very big...
147100
Banning something "because it's annoying" is a good reason, especially if you want a website that provides a good user experience.
I would suggest - and I'm not sure how feasible this is - that you write some code that will shrink all images in comments to a maximum of 600x600, unless the user has "Show large pictures at full size in comments" enabled, or something.
I'm glad you've done this, a lot of the really large images that stretch out my (widescreen!) monitor are pretty crazy. Do you think you could also set a rough file-size limit as well? Like 600k or whatever. I don't think anybody's going around posting 2MB images but hey, better safe than sorry and it's plausible with some of the badly optimised animated GIFs out there. I don't like shoving watermelons up my tube, bad touch bad touch
147110
uh, it's knighty's website, dude. he can do whatever the hell he wants on it. if you dont like it, you're free to express your opinion, and you're also free to take your business elsewhere. we find these sorts of things annoying; therefore, we dont want them on our site. the logic is sound.
Welcome Back Knighty Hope your vacation went nicely!
Not sure if I should troll by posting an image with 601X601 size....
For everyone here who may not like this rule for whatever your terrible reason is:
If you guys are really complaining about the large images (Alot of you arent, but some will be comin'. Trust me, they always do), here's a small list of instructions you can follow to make sure that you can still have your pictures going around, without it being too big for the site to handle. Remember: This site is a gift to us, and we must all follow the rules to keep this place happy and care-free (For the most of it).
Before we begin, remember to thank me at the end of this. If you ask it, maybe I'll make a quick "How to" Post for images or whatnot if you really dont know what you're doing.
1) Get yourself a paint program. I prefer Gimp.
2) Resize the image to something smaller than 600x600. All of us know how to do it, and I wont get into details. If you're having a big problem with it, try "Image" in the toolbox.
3) Have a Photobucket? if you do, put it on your account, copy the IMG tag, slap it anywhere you want and...
images2.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonvale/images/e/e0/14381-fluttershy-yay.jpg
You did it! Now people wont get pissed off at you for posting any image that's too big! And remember kids, Good Ol' Uncle Geon Best help.
Images, especially macros and memes can be quite annoying indeed. I wish people would tone it down a bit.
While we're on it, can we get rid of pointless "first" posts?
147260 They're cracking down on that with comment reports already. Personally, I'm gonna enjoy it.
When it comes to, let's not abuse it now.
FimFiction in a year:
1. Comments with over 1 (ONE) emoticon: BANHAMMER SWING!
2. Comments longer than 700 chars: BANHAMMER SWING!
3. Comments with an image bigger than 25x25 pix: BANHAMMER SWING!
4. Blogs not related to ponies: BANHAMMER SWING!
5. Making fun of FimFiction rules: BANHAMMER SWING!
No, I kid, I kid, please don't ban me. I think Knighty has a point, though. I cannot imagine what FimFiction will be in a year's time, but lets not forget about the costs of running a server. It all comes down to bandwith, used space, collected data and whatnot.
Joking aside, I would want to make everypony realize that we should really appreciate Knighty's decision to allow us to still use pics. He really just could disable them and that would be that. It's mighty easier than ensuring server-side size checking. So if he has faith in us, that we will watch ourselves and obey the rule, I say it's mighty generous and trusting of him. Please, everyone, let's not disappoint him, or we will have them pics disabled.
147273 Ja. I could'nt agree More, Mein freund.
Let's all understand that Knighty gives us these privileges because he trusts us. Let us not ruin this trust.
Isn't there a BBCode tag like [simg] or something like that which will automatically tone down image sizes to fit the window if they're too big originally? It seems to me that enabling something like that should help with the issue, and still allow people to post images which happen to be too big.
147293
Actually, resizing them could interfere with images, for instance, comics might have text too small to read.
I would much rather have images over a certain size simply be switched to a hyperlink or thumbnail on posting.
you tell us not to post large pictures in the comment box, yet you post one huge one anyway. Can't tell whether trolling, or just a hypocrite.
Anyway, here is your like a boss pic you ordered:
image.spreadshirt.com/image-server/image/composition/19693662/view/1/producttypecolor/1/type/png/width/280/height/280/like-a-boss_design.png
Time to sort through a lot of pictures...
*heavy sigh (not complaining)*
Meh. I can deal with this. Just a few extra seconds to check the size of an image... No biggie. Keep up the good work.
