Writting Experiments Are... Interesting. Sorta. · 9:38pm Jun 11th, 2014
Lately I've noticed I've noticed two things about my stories.
1. I'm gonna toot my own horn and say I'm getting better at writing with each fic. There seems to be a clear difference in detail and quality from one to the next. My first, Night of the Blue Sun is still pretty shit, to me that is. The second, The Colossally Catastrophic Conundrum, lacked detail. The third, The Pinkiemian Rhapsody, had too much bland detail. And my most recent, Your Twilestia Love Story, seems to be finding a good balance of detail and speed. But I know I still have a long ways to go.
2. I tend to experiment. All 3 of my recent fics are different kinds of experiments. I think I was just so upset with how mediocre the idea for Night of the Blue Sun was; It did have some neat things that I wanted to go for later but it would have took too long to tread over a kinda-typical "Fall of Equestria" story idea. So, I decided to work with crazier ideas that ended up as experiments.
Experiment #1 - The Colossally Catastrophic Conundrum
The Idea: To make a light-hearted mystery that doesn't take away the reader's ability to solve the problem at hand/hoof.
Final Result: Failed, though it did provide some smiles.
The Bad: Upon lacking tasty lines of detail, the gift list provided was rather overwhelming no matter how comedic I tried to make it. Plus, the surprise guest it has might have thrown several readers off.
The Good: I must say, I enjoyed writing some of the dialog in this one. I still giggle to myself when I think of Luna yelling, “That… was my moon!”
Experiment #2 - The Pinkiemian Rhapsody
The Idea: This one was crafted in order to create an interesting adventure and an actual unique learning experience for some readers (you know who you are).
Final Result: Decently positive.
The Bad: This one was long. Too long for many to sit through for the payoff of the story. According to EQD, the biggest issue was that it took way too long to start up, thus the story was shunned after the first chapter. Such told me that I need to work on speeding up my story telling, while also using tastier descriptions.
The Good: The last couple chapters is where the story still shines. Though I now see where they can be improved, all who have finished reading them (that I've heard from) seem to have a lot of praise for my work. I even passed the story to two very stingy critics, pre-release. One, a friend that I've known for quite a long time, admitted that the ending completely caught him off guard and blew him away. I then gave the story to the author that inspired me and the fic, RatherHomely, who's a much better author than I. He proofread it and returned with a solid amount of praise for its originality and how it ended. Those reviews and more recent others currently drive me to keep coming back with a better effort.
Experiment #3 - Your Twilestia Love Story
The Idea: It's kinda following in line with a "choose your own ending" kind of story, but it is meant to inspire others to actually WRITE the ending for them selves and share it with others. Such could be really fun and I'd love to see what funny, depressing, creative, or straight up wacky endings people can come up with from the story pieces I'll have in place.
Final Result: Pending. My portion of the story is nearing completion. Though my hopes are not very high. This risky idea could take off like a rocket... Or never be finished by anyone.
Experiment #4 - Title is a WIP
The Idea: My very first horror story. The idea is also a WIP, but the plot is expanding and will eventually make its way to paper-uh... keyboard.
