BABScon, Day One · 2:55am Apr 19th, 2014
Just got home from BABScon and it was a pretty good time. Statoose and I hung out for a good long while. It's always nice when you can have someone to talk to.
We watched the opening ceremonies, which I suspected was going to be horribly awkward. However, they were actually very enjoyable. They had some technical difficulties with the sound equipment, but it was sorted out fairly quickly. We had two people playing Octavia and Vinyl doing a comedy skit, and it pretty funny. Vinyl sounded just like the girl who does her in that animated short. You know, the one with the dubstep dishwasher. I'm blanking on the name right now. Anyway, I was wondering if it was the same girl. It sounded exactly like her.
When the vendors opened up, I wandered in there and bought this:
Because it was too adorable to resist. Sorry about the tilty picture. I had to hold it weird to get rid of the glare. It's pretty glossy.
I watched the sadly under-attended Goldie Awards for a while, but cut out about halfway through to go watch Amy Keating Rogers and her ukulele. That was solid entertainment. Rogers needs her own variety show or something.
Next it was off to see some of the people from the MLPDrawingSchool (Sub-Reddit) talk about how to draw ponies. Not as interesting as I hoped because it was very, very basic. I mean, I'm no great artist, but this was kind of for people that have never drawn before, so I didn't get a lot out of if. I should get back to drawing though…
After that, I wandered over to a section of the hotel I'd missed before and found the vendor area. Some very tempting plushies in there. I was afraid to ask how much they were, but they were incredible. I did find what I was looking for though:
I saw this on Reddit a little while ago and really wanted it. I was happy I ran into the vendor, and he remembered that I said that I was coming for it.
Also ran into Super Trampoline in there, who'd I'd seen once before that day. He seemed really busy. The con was going well, but generally that stuff is a facade. Behind the scenes, it's chaos, so I figured he was putting out a bunch of fires.
After that, I went to the Writers Panel. It was interesting, but I have a hard time listening to these audience members ask questions. They always seem to want to give some longwinded preamble. Just ask your question and sit down. I'm not sure if it was just fatigue or the questions, but I got a headache and decided to jet. Plenty more pony to go, so there's no point in killing myself the first day.
Oh, and I saw Knight of Cerebus there, too. He was hanging out in the parking garage.
It sounds awesome! And your purchases were lovely! *steals them onto her computer for future admiration*
Hrmm... maybe the wordsmiths couldn't help getting wordy?
Ha, I know I have trouble spitting things out, but I can usually type more coherently. Sometimes. At least Amy Keating Rogers is a gold-mine.
Yeah, the people asking questions at these things do tend to be pretty frustrating. The roleplayers annoy me the most, especially the ones that try to do a bad Fluttershy whisper and have to ask their question three or four times because nobody can hear them.
OH GOD, THE QUESTIONS AT THE END OF PANELS! I forgot to warn everyone I know. They are awful, and they just get worse. God help the poor people at fanfic writing panels, because everyone who has a question wants to start off by telling everyone everything about their fic.
By Saturday at BronyCon, I was slipping out once they started the questions. There was just not going to be enough information given for the amount of time I was going to spend listening to socially inept people ramble before getting to their point.
2023428 There was a girl there roleplaying as Maud Pie. That's when I left. She was trying to be really monotone and took forever getting to her question. She was taking all this time establishing that she was, in fact, Maud Pie. I wanted to throw Boulder at her.
Some of the questions were really good though. Someone asked if we could get a good Celestia episode, and Meghan McCarthy kind of hemmed and hawed in a way that makes it seem like that's something they have done or are doing and that she just can't talk about it yet. I makes me wonder if there is something about the finale that is key to Celestia. She says that the upcoming finale is the thing that she's most proud of in all of her MLP work.
Yes that would be Nowacking doing the Vinyl stuff.
2023432 Well, there aren't very many fanfic panels to attend, so I guess I'm safe in that regard.
I was just cradling my head because they MC asked the panel, oh, maybe four questions. Then they opened it up and told the audience to go line up behind this mic. About a quarter of the audience got up. That's… a lot of awkward questions. I got through about ten before I couldn't take it anymore.
2023446 I thought it must be. The voice was so exact. I was nice to have that continuity.
Actually, by the time I saw you the second time, the fires had been mostly extinguished, thankfully.
2023506 Well, don't worry. Tomorrow will be a whole new batch of fires for you to chase down.
2023432 As somebody who has a panel, that's not encouraging...
And anyhoo, Juggernaut, sorry I missed ya, but I was down a lot of the day. Oh well. See ya tomorrow, maybe?
2023595 I'll be around for much of the day. I mean, I want to go to the VA panel at, what, eleven in the morning and then your panel at that ridiculously late time, so I'll have plenty of time I need to fill in between.
2023595 and by "down", you mean you were asleep half the day.
2023860 I actually wasn't. Got some writing done, 'smatter of fact.
