Icecane

Though I'm not new when it comes to writing fanfiction, I know I'm far from perfect. Hopefully as I try my hand at writing the many MLP fics I have in my head, I'll get much better at it.

    Icecane's ramble-tangent-aside... thing on EqG.

    Hello everyone, Icecane here.

To get things started, this blog really doesn't mean much. It's not really anything important regarding anything, more of a way to hear myself... talk(?) all the while delaying my eventual mental breakdown. To bring up the topic at hand, I ended up fully watching through Equestria Girls.

    I'm back!

Okay everyone, I'm back. Whatever that means at this point.

Finally got a replacement laptop and set it up the way I like it. And yes, I got it back in late December, but I've been doing other things with it and getting ready to begin working on stories again.

    Icecane: M.I.A.

Well then... Hiya everybody. Icecane here.

Now, I know I've seemed to have vanished for a while now. Not that I'm sure any of you particularly cared... *cough* But I am sorry for it.

At first, I was simply taking a bit of a break from writing up fanfic stuff. I had planned to come back guns a blazing and ready to update stories and even start a new one I've had my thoughts on.

*cough* *cough* Hopefully computer doesn't mess up when trying to make this...

But anyway... Hello everypony, Icecane here.

As of late, I've found myself, how you'd say... in a stupor or... a... not a rut but... something else... Feeling unable to want to write anything or try something in terms of storytelling.

First Blog Post Evar!!! Also: My stupidity and the future of Icecane Inc.

So, it's my first blog post... Where I force those who dare have a general enjoyment of what I may or may not have done to see my words and ideas! *evil laughter* Though technically.... I already do that in the comment section of my latest story... You know, because I hate Author's Notes for whatever reason.

Icecane's ramble-tangent-aside... thing on EqG. · 2:58pm Apr 16th, 2014

A bit late for that, amiright? Though I hadn't really seen it until now, I've pretty much knew most of what was going on, thanks to the internet and what few clips I saw. But with the next one coming out, and several questions I needed answered that only the movie could provide, I decided to sit down and watch it. And boy oh boy...

I'm not going to sit here and give my thoughts on it as a whole, it's too late for that and I'm not some reviewer. But, there is something I just NEED to talk about and hopefully recieve your thoughts on it. I'm mostly doing this because since Day 1 of Equestria Girls coming out I've had this question, the movie didn't help any, and what really messes with me is the fact that no one ever seems to mention or talk about it.

So, to finally say it, what's up with the age of everyone in this movie?

Twilight goes from an adult to a teenager. Now, we can debate all day and night about what the ages of the mane-six are, but they are adults, there is no argument against it. Rarity owns her own business, Pinkie Pie rents her place, and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy own their own houses. All we know for certain about specifics is that Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie.

Now, ignoring that the movie is just them trying to cash in on the stupid idea that little girls just LOVE high-school stuff, what with Monster High and the rest of that tripe, it still makes no sense. The fact that Twilight doesn't even mention it herself baffles me beyond reason. And when you realize that throughout the movie, they literally spend NO time in an actual classroom just makes me wonder why it needed to be in a highschool to begin with. Seriously, Twilight knows what school is, yet makes no mention of it. Remember back in Lesson Zero she freaks out about Magic Kindergarten?

Then they have Cheerilee show up, as some sort of librarian/teacher? Yet she's the same age as the mane-six... And yes, yes she is. She was in Rarity's class during the Cutie Mark Flashback episode, so they are around the same age. Though, she might just be some kind of student-assistant or something, but she really does seem like she's an adult.

What about Sunset Shimmer? How old is she even? She was Celestia's student before Twilight (Which I think is BS anyway considering why Twilight's her student in the first place), then left because she "turned evil" or whatever. I really don't think a filly (Twilight's age when she became Celestia's student) would "turn evil" then run off into a magical mirror. She would have at least been a teenager/young adult at the time. Which makes her becoming a teenager/Twilight's rival all the stranger.

Now, besides the fact that the movie itself doesn't have Twilight bring ANY mention to it whatsoever, there's also one big glaring detail that makes it so strange to me. Her god-awful "romance" with Flash Sentry. He is from that world, he is a teenager, as in underage. Yet Twilight's hitting on him? It's weird... just... weird. This is ignoring the fact that Flash is an awful, non-existent character, or how their romance is cliche with a capital Overdone, it's just messed up. Hell, what about him being Sunset's ex? Like I said, how old is she?! How is no one bringing this up?!

I'm not even bringing up the fact that Twilight would find a human attractive, especially after only seeing them for a single second. Everyone mentions how stupid, cliche, and forced their romancing is, but I don't think I've seen ANYONE ever bring up their age before. It really and truly bothers me to no end, more so than the bad writing in the actual movie. Okay, sure, I've seen someone mention how Twilight changing wasn't a "problem", about how they could be teenagers in MLP and age works differently, but that still doesn't change it.

Maturity is still maturity, the physical body wouldn't suddenly make Twilight into a pedophile. And even if they had the normal life-span of horses (which is like forty years I think) it still doesn't make sense in the context of the show. I seriously doubt Granny Smith is only a few decades old, or that Ponyville is for that matter, as they are about the same age.

Okay... so yeah... that's the thing. Like I said, this was something that bothered me from the beginning, which bothers me even more so now that I know the movie makes no mention to any of it. I just want to know what everyone else thinks, if there's actually groups of fans out there that do point this out. And like I said, I didn't want this to be about the movie, as it's been out for a while now already and I do have very mixed feelings about it.

But, if you've read it this far, thanks for listening(reading). It's just something that's plaguing my mind now, and I needed someplace to talk or vent as you will. If you're more curious about what I'm actually doing at the moment, I can say that I'm working on a new story at the moment and can't wait to be able to start posting it.

P.S. Anyone else find it funny that the same writer who wrote the awful and useless character that is Shining Armor also wrote the awful and useless character that id Flash Sentry? Feels like this show can't do male characters well if they aren't abused dragon-pets or Discord.

First off, the age of the mane six could be debated day in and day out. But based on days of research i found that they range mostly between 17-19 years old. That also doesn't mean considering the way things in equestria work, that that they are not adults.

also based on the episode of "for whom the sweetie bell toils" we can safely say that ponies age similar to humans.

Plus, cheerilee is about shining armors age, as she is shown in the comics with not only her wild hair but also her cutie mark when twilight is still a filly. It cant be said for certain that that filly was cheerilee considering all the reused assets in mlp.

just my nit picks
