Random Review 3-Batman: Arkham City · 4:31am Apr 13th, 2014
Why the hell do I even write these things anyway? Not like anyone actually reads them. I don't know, maybe it helps me fully comprehend whatever it is that I decided to write a review for.
Anyway, I've beaten Arkham City a couple times before, but I just replayed it, so I figured I might as well write this review. A lot of people say that the gameplay is fantastic, and the stealth and fighting are both incredible, and the puzzles are awesome, and it's overall one of the best games ever. I disagree.
Don't get me wrong, it's pretty damn amazing. The stealth and fighting blend seamlessly and can intertwine with no real issue should you feel like it. The game has a lot to do. And should you get bored, you can get yourself off to Catwoman/Batman depending on your own personal preference at any time, considering both of their models are fairly skin-tight and sexually appealing.
However, the gameplay is my opinion isn't what makes it shine. The combat is decent. The stealth is decent. The puzzles are decent. And the masturbation sessions to the playable characters are...
Moving on.
If the game was all it was, it wouldn't be a quarter as widely revered. It would be all right, but that's all it would be. The real shining star of the package is the lore and attention to detail.
It's like Dark Souls in a way, should any of the 0 people who read this have played that game. There's the surface level of the game, which is, well, the game. But that's not all. Far from it, in fact. The way everything is tied together; the Scarecrow messages, Azrael watching you, Killer Croc in the sewers, that's what makes the game great. Hell, Calendar Man is there. Fucking CALENDAR MAN. And if you come to him while your system's internal clock registers a holiday, he'll tell you about the crimes he committed then. Now all they need is Kite Man (yes, he exists) soaring in circles around the blimp to have the complete package.
Another strange way the game makes everything feel real is with the conversations you overhear. They're small and insignificant, and most people will probably not bother to listen. But they add so much! The thugs feel human, despite how cruel they are. I was in stitches one time when a thug talked about how long it had been since he'd last updated his status, or jokingly discussed the possibility of Arkham World. Somehow, every character with more than three minutes of time to shine (that is to say, everyone except 2 or 3 of the villains in the side missions) seems human, and you feel sorry for them in the end, even the serial killer Zsazz. I hope that's how you spell it.
So, if Arkham City worthy of all its praise? Probably not. Is it great despite that? Absolutely. I wouldn't suggest it to everyone, especially if you're a tad impatient or would rather be on a crazy roller coaster ride of insanity. But if you can stomach a slightly slow pace and more or less average gameplay in turn for an incredible story and attention to detail, you'll love it. It may not have the same kickassitude as some games, but it gets things done just fine.
Kickassitude. Never typing that again.
