Pre-historical
-Equestria founded. Alicornism develops as a result of interbreeding between the three pony races.
-The rise of Discord. Equestria falls into an era of chaos and disharmony.
-Discord banished by Celestia and Luna, who are subsequently crowned rulers of Equestria.
C. 1000 AD
-Luna possessed by the Nightmare Moon entity, and banished to the moon.
1937
-Ancient ruins of unknown origin are discovered off the coast of Chile. The American and Soviet Philosophers dispatch a joint task force to the island for unknown purposes.
1939
-The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The American Philosophers withdraw support for the joint mission. The Soviets struggle to continue the mission alone.
1941
-Operation Barbarossa. Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union. The project on the island is shelved indefinitely.
1943
-The Cobra Unit is formed.
1944
-Operation Overlord. The Joy is wounded on the beaches of Normandy and is forced to extract her unborn child manually. She nevertheless completes her mission.
1945
-Germany and Japan capitulate, ending World War II.
1947
-The Cobra Unit is disbanded.
-Under the direction of the Soviet Philosophers, The Sorrow forms a new unit tasked with finding, cataloging, and recruiting espers throughout the Eastern Bloc. The End and The Fear join him.
1950
-Alistair Cain is born in England.
C. 1955
-The KGB absorbs The Sorrow's unit. The Sorrow, The Fear, and The End leave in protest.
1962
-The Joy (now called The Boss) encounters The Sorrow at Doliovodno, Tselinoyarsk, and assassinates him.
1964
-The Virtuous Mission. The Boss defects to the Soviet Union and reforms the Cobra Unit. Colonel Volgin fires an American-made nuclear warhead at the Sokolov Design Bureau.
-Operation Snake Eater. Naked Snake assassinates The Boss, Volgin, and the Cobra Unit, and destroys the Shagohod. The American Philosophers obtain half of the Philosophers' Legacy.
1972
-Naked Snake encounters and recruits Kazuhira Miller in Colombia.
-The Bogside Massacre occurs in Northern Ireland. Alistair Cain participates, and subsequently abandons the British Army in disgust.
-The Les Enfants Terrible project yields two clones of Big Boss.
1973
-Alistair Cain is recruited into the Militaires Sans Frontiers.
1973
-The KGB establishes a military presence off the coast of Chile, without informing the Chilean government. The U.S.S.R. disavows all knowledge of the operation.
-In the midst of a territorial dispute with the Gryphons, Princess Celestia vanishes. Defense minister Macbeth declares himself regent, and escalates tensions with provocative military maneuvers. Upon her return, Celestia dismisses Macbeth from the cabinet, and withdraws all Equestrian military personnel and equipment from the disputed region.
-Salvador Allende's government is overthrown in an American-backed coup.
1974
-The Peace Walker incident.
1975
-Princess Celestia declares the Pax Equestria. All military forces are disbanded. All military equipment is impounded in an arsenal located in Stalliongrad.
-Alistair Cain elects to resign from the MSF. He obtains a full military pardon from the British Army through Big Boss's connections.
-Mother Base is destroyed. The MSF is dispersed.
-Sigint salvages the Mammal and Reptile Pods from the remains of Peace Walker.
1980
-Alistair Cain joins the Special Air Service. He subsequently participates in the Iranian Embassy siege, assaulting the building as part of a rescue operation. He wins a commendation for his actions.
1990-1991
The Persian Gulf War. Solid Snake kills his first man.
1995
-The Outer Heaven uprising. Solid Snake destroys the final weapon, Metal Gear, and rescues the missing Gray Fox.
-Alistair Cain participates in the NATO mop-up campaign. Disgusted, he joins the Outer Heaven survivors and resistance members, and attempts to rally them. They are rescued by Big Boss, who survived his battle with Solid Snake.
1998
-A notorious serial killer, known to the media as the Praying Mantis, is apprehended. He subsequently dies in FBI custody after an encounter with a psychic employed by the bureau.
1999
-The Zanzibar Land uprising. Solid Snake destroys Metal Gear. Big Boss and Gray Fox are presumed dead. Alistair Cain has a gun battle with Solid Snake that ends with the death of his entire platoon. He rallies the survivors and leads them away, well ahead of the ensuing NATO mop-up mission.
-Rainbow Dash performs a Sonic Rainboom at Summer Flight Camp. She, and five other unrelated fillies, gain their Cutie Marks from the experience. Twilight Sparkle experiences her first magical episode, hatching Spike in the process. Princess Celestia recruits her to the school for gifted unicorns, as her personal student.
2000
The Pegasus Wings Private Army is officially launched.
2005
-The Shadow Moses Incident. Metal Gear REX is destroyed. FOXHOUND is slain; Revolver Ocelot is the sole survivor. He leaks the schematics for REX onto the black market.
-While in custody, Naomi Hunter is forced by the Patriots to participate in the production of a new line of cyborg ninja.
-Former minister of defense Macbeth seizes the Stalliongrad arsenal with the intent of inciting a wave of violence against the crown. Princess Celestia personally puts down his revolt, and exiles Macbeth.
2006
-Solid Snake and Otacon form the anti-Metal Gear NGO, Philanthropy.
-Ocelot breaks Naomi Hunter out of prison.
2007
-The Tanker Incident. Marine commandant Scott Dolph and Sergei Gurlukovitch are slain. Revolver Ocelot steals Metal Gear RAY. Solid Snake is presumed dead on the scene.
2008
-The 1000th anniversary of the Summer Sun Celebration. Nightmare Moon escapes from confinement, and is defeated by the Elements of Harmony. Twilight Sparkle moves to Ponyville.
-Fluttershy babysits the Cutie Mark Crusaders for a night. They wander into the Everfree Forest, and are nearly killed by a cockatrice.
2009
-The Big Shell Incident. Dead Cell and Olga Gurlukovitch are slain. Arsenal Gear is shipwrecked on Manhattan Island. Raiden kills Solidus Snake in single combat.
-Discord escapes from confinement, and is once again defeated, this time by Twilight Sparkle and the other bearers of the Elements of Harmony.
-Trenton becomes acquainted with Macbeth, and makes contact with Pegasus Wings.
2010
-The wedding of Shining Armor and Princess Cadance. The Changelings attempt an invasion of Canterlot, but are defeated.
-Pegasus Wings seizes a decommissioned Soviet nuclear missile, and a black market copy of Metal Gear REX. Philanthropy investigates.
-American forces secure the island facility in the Pacific. They find no trace of the missile, of Metal Gear, or of Pegasus Wings, save the scuttled remains of the Zanzibar Breeze.
2014
-Guns of the Patriots. The SOP system is destroyed. Solid Snake retires, and begins writing his memoirs.
2018
-Raiden dismantles Desperado Enforcement. The Bladewolf is adopted by Sunny Emmerich.
Note on the formatting: I tried putting events particular to Equestria in violet, to distinguish them from "real life" events. It didn't take all the way, for some reason, so I'm sorry for that.
Ooh. I never noticed before that the Chile incident and Celestia's temporary disappearance took place during the same year. I'm starting to get an idea of what went on now.

re: MGSV: I tried to only include things that directly pertained to the story. Ground Zeroes IS in there, but only because the destruction of Mother Base is relevant to Cain's back story.
Although, some things, like noting the end of WWII or the fall of the Allende government, do seem like sauce for the goose...
Anyway, I don't know who Danceswithknives is, but I don't want to make a habit of publicly disparaging other writers, so I'm afraid I can't agree with you there. For many reasons.
