Why I Don't Ship FlutterPie (Filli Vanilli talk) · 7:12pm Feb 15th, 2014
So, I'm watching Filli Vanilli (because it's up on YouTube quicker than a cheetah chasing it's dinner) and in the first four minutes or so there's a LOT of dialogue and interaction between Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie- for me, that's best pony/second favourite pony and worst pony. So I'm a bit conflicted whenever they're in scenes together.
Also, I really do not like FlutterPie as a shipping AT ALL- if you know me then you'll probably be used to me ranting about it XD
Here I'd like to discuss a few reasons why I hate it, mostly using episode context.
First off, they have clashing personalities, which is quite obvious. Pinkie Pie is extroverted, loud, sociable, slightly obnoxious in the sense that she doesn't quite know when to stop and tone it down without being told so or prompted obviously, she's a party mare who lives life to the fullest and loves to hang out with other ponies, talking, laughing, etc. Fluttershy, in contrast, is an introverted animal lover who is extremely shy to the point of fault and most likely has some sort of anxiety disorder that disables her from talking to new ponies and being assertive, as we can see from episodes such as Putting Your Hoof Down. This is actually a really interesting characteristic when you consider her anger issues shown most prominently in The Best Night Ever. Her shyness could possibly be a response to trying to hide her anger and be more relaxed, that spiraled into her antisocial behavior that is now true today. But that's another story.
Fluttershy would rather spend the day inside by herself caring for her animals, while Pinkie Pie would rather be around other ponies making them smile and having a party involving socializing with many different ponies at the same time. They are extreme opposites, holding court at different ends of the spectrum. While I'm not saying opposites can't attract, it hardly ever bodes well for a successful relationship. bookplayer has some really nice blogs on this, and she can probably explain it better than me, so go check those out.
TL;DR: Since Pinkie and Flutters are so different it makes it really difficult to ship them together because you have this massive obstacle to get over.
So, let's look at the interaction between them in Filli Vanilli.
Remember what I said earlier about Pinkie Pie not knowing when she has to stop and/or tone down her excitement? Well, this is relevant here. Pinkie Pie would outshine Fluttershy vastly, never letting the shy mare get a word in edge-ways. She also doesn't understand that Fluttershy being told all these things is never going to help her shyness. Fluttershy needs support and stability, and a pony that will understand when they have to stop and help he overcome her shyness without forcing/manipulating her (like Rarity or Rainbow Dash would) or blatantly ignoring it (like Pinkie would). This is one of the reasons I only ship Fluttershy with Applejack and Twilight, because they can offer Flutters support while letting her stand on her own in a way that's good for both of them.
TL;DR: Pinkie would not be good for Fluttershy mentally or emotionally because she doesn't understand that Fluttershy needs emotional support.
So, that's enough of that I think. I don't want to be a downer. Let's move on to some episode discussion- these are my live thoughts as I watch it!
That moment of Fluttershy saying 'no' to Rarity was a great subtle bit of character development which really shows how far we've come from S1 Fluttershy. And that RariPie moment was pretty cute too.
THAT BIT WITH ANGEL THO
DYING OF LAUGHTER
Just an observation, though, we're nine minutes in and we've got the main conflict already here. It seems a bit fast-paced.
This episode has so many background comedy gold moments, it's great.
This song is ... nice. It reminds me of something from Pitch Perfect. And dat CheeriMac moment.
Looks like Flutterbat still lives in Fluttershy XD
This episode was cringe-worthy. But it was okay, I guess. Better that Power Ponies and Castlemania.
8-Bit out.
