Monochromation

Your average, everyday idiot with an academic vocabulary. I'm still trying to work out whether or not that's a good combination. I occasionally write things.

    Post-Hiatus Rejuvination

I'm not dead! For a couple weeks there I had myself worried, but I think somebody at DHX brought me a defibrillator.

On the Subject of my Newly Released Story

So, Sunday morning afternoon, I wake up. I'm tired, hungry, bored, all of these lovely adjectives generally associated with waking up. So, I get myself some breakfast, hop on the computer, and open up FiMfic to read some horsewords and wake myself up right.

    Europe update: Paris

I'd like to note before starting that the French town of Bayeux seems to be completely devoid of useable public Wi-Fi. That is really the only explanation I have concerning my silence during the last few days, despite my promise to keep regular updates on my trip through Europe.

    England Day 3

It's been a right long time since I last posted a blog post, an even longer time since I posted anything but empty promises for stories that never came. I decided that I oughtn't just ramble on about just anything, so I just didn't blog.

I've found something to blog about.

    Well, I have snippets!

So, I was reading Undead Equestria and a thought hit me: so far the story has been mostly confined to the southern and eastern regions of Equestria. What's going on out west of Canterlot? Maybe this'll be covered later in the story, but I figured I'd write myself a little story just for the heck of it. Good practice and good fun.

Now, even if I finish this, I doubt I'll ever release it. I'd have to get consent from Sorren, who is a great guy, and I'm sure he'd give it, but the point is that it wouldn't feel right. It wouldn't be my story I was publishing. Yeah, I wrote the words, but the hard stuff? Setting the atmosphere, creating the universe, that's all been done. I just don't think it would be right.

However I don't like stuff going completely unseen, so I figured I'd post a few clips of what I've got done, so that anyone who wanders by can take a read. Hope you like it, and please offer any constructive criticism you feel is necessary. The main goal of this was to better my writing, so any feedback is welcome.

Beginning at chapter one, paragraph twenty-six:

Tinker trudged over to the nearest window, peering outside. She grimaced as the horde poured through the checkpoint gates, crushing barricades and collapsing benches in their haste to get into the office building. They were already flooding the lobby. "Holy Celestia," she murmured as she stared from the second story window at the writhing sea of zombies below. "How many of them do you think there are?"

Monochrome shook his head, looking to his purple unicorn companion. "Too many," he sighed, stretching his wings. "After running that gauntlet, I don't think Gale Force and I alone can fly you out of here. Heck, I've barely got it in me to fly myself! We'd better hope this place has a proper back door... And a fire escape." Mono raised the bit of his submachine gun, glaring at a pegasus zombie who had floated above the crowd. "Shit," he cursed, taking aim. "They're flying for us!"

"Oh no," Tinker gasped, her eyes widening. "Gale!"

"What?" Gale Force thundered around a corner, joining the other two by the window. "Dammit! Eventually they're going to figure out they can get through these things." As if on cue, the pegasus that had caught Monochrome's attention seemed to notice them. It backed up midair, then suddenly charged the window. It collided with a dull thud, accompanied by the worrying crinkle of breaking glass. As the trio watched the zombie rear up for a second attack, a small web of cracks appeared on the window-pane, slowly radiating outward.

"Gale," Monochrome muttered around the firing bit. "Did you find us a way out?"

"Well, yes and no..."

The zombie rammed the window a second time. The cracks got larger, faster.

"Gale?"

"There's roof access on the fourth floor. You and I could make it, Mono, but what about...?"

Another collision. Shards of glass fell to the ground as the window shattered.

Monochrome fired. The three round burst tore through the head of the pegasus zombie. Its limp corpse fell to the ground, where it was torn to pieces by the zombies below it.

"Run!" Mono screamed. The others did not have to be told twice. Already more pegasi were screaming toward the now wide open window. The three ponies shot down the hallway, rounding corners until they found themselves at the third floor stairwell. Another flight of stairs, another frantic dash through the halls of the abandoned office.

"We're almost there!" Gale yelled, his unruly yellow mane flying behind him. "Just take a left here!"

Tinker and Monochrome obeyed. Tinker could hear the screams and flapping echo from the passageways behind them. The sound was bloodcurdling, terrifying. And it was getting louder.

Gale ran ahead. "Come on!" He screamed, beckoning toward another flight of stairs. "This is it." With this he turned and ran, practically flying up the steps. In fact, if it weren't so cramped, he could have flown. He was flapping his wings in an effort to gain more speed, and Tinker almost expected him to leave the ground.

Monochrome was next, and Tinker followed, scurrying upward as fast as her legs would allow. As soon as she burst through the doorway and onto the roof, Gale Force slammed the door shut, setting a small stack of wooden pallets against it. Almost immediately the three heard the sound of bodies thumping against the door, causing it to shake in it's metal frame.

"Bucking hay," Monochrome wheezed. "That won't hold them long. They'll either knock down the door or figure out that they can get to us by flying out another window. Either way—"

"We're royally screwed," finished Tinker, staring at the heavy iron door as it bulged and bent. They had to get off of this roof. But how?

Well, that's all I'm giving you for now. Hope you liked it. I was calling this little project "Undead Equestria: San Prancisco". It does take place in San Prancisco. It should have more to do with the military's attempts to quarantine the city than the zombies, actually, but that's yet to be seen.
