    Computer works again

Well, I took away the following lesson from getting my computer to work again.

    1) My local computer store is really great (they burnt me a recovery disk for free)
    2) System refresh is a great way to clear off programs.
    3) Microsoft support can't be relied on.

Long story short, I'm having technical issues.

To keep it brief, both my laptop and my computer have stopped working within about a week of each other a week ago. I lost pretty much a full collateral chapter when my laptop went (screen is dead), and a little more (when I started rewriting it) when my desktop computer starting having trouble (error d0000452). I'm trying to get the later fixed, but no ETA as of yet. All I have now is a tiny

    Little update on Collateral

    Hey guys.

I had previously said that I would be returning to the normal update schedule once exams were over, but I had forgotten about an additional component of the course: Co-op related assignments and work. Collateral will resume weekly updates as of this Saturday.

Let Them Eat Cake and the spiritual sequels. · 5:40pm Dec 5th, 2013

When I originally wrote Let Them Eat Cake, it was a spur of the moment idea as I was on a long drive home from a trip. Although at the time, it was partly spawned from just a simple matter of food detailing memories, it became something more. The story was just supposed to be one of those nice, slice of life stories that are nice to read for a change. Just good, but never really going beyond that. As I was writing, and changing lines, I got more and more into Celestia's character. Eventually, the story became something more than I had planned it to be.

At first the line, "And let them eat cake," was nothing more than what it was: a simple way of tying up the story. There wasn't much depth beyond it, and certainly nothing worthy of praise. However, by the time of publishing, it had become something more. The same line briefly summed up means, "Live your life and make beautiful memories with the friends and things you love." Of course, everyone has their own take from it, and that's the thing I feel I nailed more than anything else. Go ahead, and re-read it. I'm sure you'll take more meaning from it the second time through.

I'm not suggesting it is a perfect story; I'd be the last person to suggest that. In fact, I still can't understand how it was so well received. Quite frankly, I'm still astonished at how many people liked it. I was sure there would be many people finding faults with it. But perhaps that is why it did so well. The faults do seem to work to the story's advantage, whether I intended them to our not.

So in the end, what was meant to be a simple feel good story, became one which boiled down Celestia's character. In essence the story is about one of the aspect of herself Celestia uses as a foundation of her life.

When I wrote A Pie Worth Makin', I wanted to see if I could do it again. It's a spiritual sequel, not because they both involve "slices", but it because it involves the same ideas: breaking down a character to their foundation. I don't intend to spoil it, but it should become clear to those who read it. While Let Them Eat Cake I am pretty confident in, A Pie Worth Makin' may be a little more hit and miss for some. In a manner of speaking, it is a more personal story, which can make it a touch more difficult to relate to. You might take from it what you will, but I can only hope it will be enjoyed the same way.
