Nah, stranger. I'm just a man. A man with a deep love of friendship, stories... and ponies. Movies too, but this site's for ponies.

    The Story of Tonight

I didn't expect this result to come to pass. I didn't want it to. I would be writing this same blog if my country was seeing blue instead of red.

That was a long drought... · 12:38am Nov 25th, 2013

But the water never tasted so fresh.

Normally I would gush over how everything was so awesome Digibrony style, but tonight I'm feeling kinda tired and need some rest. Regardless I need to give my piece on the premier.

I loved it, but I think I should say that it isn't perfect. Towards the end the pacing starts to go rotten. The moment when the group decides to send Twilight away seemed a bit rushed, even if it was probably a wise decision. Needs of the many and such. Although that choice seriously bit them in the ass (insert racist donkey joke here) when they got to the Tree of Harmony and realized "Hey! We can't do any magical stuff. We need a princess." If there was any two parted that could have seriously benefited from having a third episode it would be this one. Applejack constantly failing at being comforting seemed weird to me. It wouldn't bother me so much if they didn't have so much of it. The alicorn potion was a bit of a convenience but hey, it's Zecora. She's awesome. Also, why does alicorn magic look like Sombra's dark magic? That's..... not a good sign.

That said there is not much else to complain about because this two parter did so many things wonderfully. The animation was great. The way they established how the group as a whole has dealt with Twilight's ascension was great. They show that just because a big change has happened doesn't make them any different from the ponies they are. The comedy relief from both Pinkie Pie and Discord was spot on. Who knew she was that fast with letters?
Speaking of Discord, he was really channeling his inner Q in this. His role in this more than makes up for the missteps in Keep Calm and Flutter On. He's developed so much more naturally after being "reformed", with Fluttershy still being the only one to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is willing to help in his own dickish way, but he if he is gonna be like this whenever he's on I am all for that. But if he doesn't appear before them with a mariachi band and blowing a trumpet I am RAGE QUITTING!!

I also really liked the touches to the opening. Granted I'm wondering why Snips, Snails, or the Mayor are there if they aren't that much of recurring characters. I mean Zecora, the CMC, Big Mac and Granny make sense and Photo Finish is awesome but it just seems a bit weird that they are there. At least Luna is there.

The story and adventure aspect was almost done perfectly. The concept and execution was as ambitious as any adventure fic I've seen, and how they also added aspects of Equestrian history that we've been dying to see for so long was also brilliant. Admit it, you cheered with excitement when you saw that Nightmare Moon sequence. It was brilliantly shot, you felt the tragedy of what happened, it's even kind of tense. And that shot of Twilight crying over Celestia's body gave me shivers. Also that conversation afterwards implies a very uncomfortable point of view. I liked it.

The last ten minutes gets me hyped for more so much it scares me.

How are the girls going to fight the evilest of evil without the Elements of Harmony? What is with that box with the six locks? Are we going to have an adventure across Equestria to find the keys? Are we going to see more Equestrian history? Is Discord going to stay on as the Team Q? Why does Twilight's new crown look so dinky? What of Derpy?! What's in the box?!

WHAT'S IN THE BOOOOOOX??!!!!

Overall it was a great way to start the season and this is a season long arc that I can get behind.

And we also got Doctor Who the same day. That's a plus.
