    Fragments From The Archives

Hey folks! It’s been a while. I hope everyone’s doing well over here.

I was going through some old files, and I found a bunch of unfinished stories I was working on, way back when. I’ve posted three of them in my scrapfile for whoever's interested.

New Holiday Story: Where The Heart Is

I've posted a new story about going home for the holidays. You won't see it in your feed, because the mods in their infinite wisdom have decreed that sufficiently short stories aren't actually stories, so this blog is to let you know that it's available in my

Help Me, And Win A Free Commission

Thanks to Chris, I've been thinking about writing style recently. What is a style? Do I have one? Do I have more than one? How can I tell? “Thinking really hard about these questions” doesn't seem like a good way to get answers, since my most common problem as a writer is that I don't communicate the ideas I mean to communicate.

Commission Policy, Revised · 8:08pm Nov 6th, 2013

I write stories in return for donations to The Best Charity In The World. [1] (Example, example) I've done a couple of these and learned some things, so I'm updating the rules:

—The rate is $25 donated per 1000 expected words. I'll go lower if I decide I have a good reason.
——Before I start writing, we'll come to agreement about which charity you're funding, and you'll provide me proof of your donation.
——If I'm more than 5% under the target, then I'll refund the difference if asked.
——If I'm over the target, then congratulations, you have a bunch of free horse words.

—There are no restrictions on content.
——I reserve the right to reject ideas if I don't think I can make it work. I'm very unlikely to actually do this.

[1] Identifying The Best Charity In The World is a fascinating topic, and much of my motivation here is to make people actually think about the question. GiveWell's recommendations are the obvious place to start the search, and an acceptable place to stop. I am happy to talk about this at length.
