This is a character that I've modeled after myself. He is in need of a name. I've asked around and got a few good ones, but I want to have some more help. I'm sure you want to know more about him. Well, here goes.
His talent is applied magic; I wanted him to offset Twilight, as she's more theoretical magic. The first noble-born of his family, he lived with his Earth pony father and sister and his Pegasus mother. Both parents met when they were in the Equestrian Hooved Services (his father was a His parents were granted nobility by Princess Celestia for their courageous actions during a skirmish with the Changelings; though they refused at first, some wise words from the princess caused them to reluctantly accept. Until he was 12, he was taught by private tutors, as his parents didn't believe in traditional Canterlot education. A visit from Celestia changed their mind, and he was enrolled in Celestia' School for Gifted Unicorns (CSGU). He excelled while there and graduated near the top of his class. After he enrolled in the college division of CSGU (more commonly known as Canterlot University (thank you, cooljwj)), he tried to find ways to use magic that was banned in Equestria to advance technology. He was ratted out by a "friend/assistant" who was paid off by other nobles, and he was subsequently expelled. This caused him to hate nobles who believed they were superior over the "pony rabble." Also, his expulsion caused a negative backlash in the academic community as well as general society. He is seen by many as evil, fearsome, and rash.
For years, he and his family are treated as inferior by many other nobles due to his parents' ignoble heritage and his family's fraternization with the common ponies. On top of that, his father favored his sister more than he did him; he was more a "mama's colt," if you catch my meaning. His mother's death truly tore him apart, his father believing the experiments did that to her (him not understanding magic at all didn't help either); his sister also would deride him for his expulsion, his semi-reserved attitude, and his illegal experiments. He slowly grew bitter; his mother's presence in his life kept those feelings in check. He was recently assigned by Princess Celestia to serve as aide/adviser to the newly-crowned Princess Twilight Sparkle. Though refusing, like his parents, he accepted reluctantly.
He is very talented in magic (slightly behind pre-alicorn Twilight) and history. Due to his parents, he carries some of their traits (though not at 100% levels): an Earth pony's strength and stubbornness with a Pegasus' speed and agility. Though he is extremely intelligent and a unicorn (who are not known to be physical), he is quite strong. He may not be able to buck every apple from an apple tree, but he can beat some Earth ponies in physical competition. Also, his speed gives him a faster reaction time, able to block a spell and retaliate in a little over a second.
