Me ranting about Alicorn OCs · 3:44pm Sep 2nd, 2013
(If you don't wantto hear me rant then don't read this. Especially if you have an alicorn OC.)

To start off; I don't like alicorn OCs. At all. There will most likely be very few instances where i'm like; "That OC is a very well thought and good char. And it's and alicorn." My problem stems from the fact that alicorns in the MLP universe are RARE There are only FOUR we know of which means by making your OC an alicorn you are basically throwing cannon out the window.

This does not. Here's the reason why, The one above me is a joke. The one above that one is not. But if you DO make an alicorn OC that is ~rainbow sparkle kawaii!~ please know that I will ignore it and probably say nothing but on the inside want to suggest fixing it. The reason why I dislike Alicorn OCs so much is mainly because they are far too often SUPER MARY SUE. Authors either try to make them cute or SUPER EDGY. The stereotype for edgy is having as "Black coat with crimson red eyes and a fiery red mane." the stereotype for being ~rainbow sparkle kawaii!~ is well. being rainbowy-sparkly and suuuuper cute. Both however have "tragic" backstories that make no sense! I read one OC who was a lost queen and had amnesia for pete's sakes! How much more Mary SUe can you get. (Much more actually.) Now I will read a direct quote from an Alicorn OC I found.
*ehem*
"Long ago in the kingdom of old, A princess had been born. The kingdom was filled with happiness and love and joy but after a few days the King and Queen died in an accident. With no magic to dictate the kingdom it exploded. Only leaving the princess behind."
SO YOU'RE BASICALLY SAYING THIS JUST HAPPENED TO THE KINGDOM?!
WHAT. WHY. WHERE IS THE EXPLANATION?!? THIS MAKES NO SENSE. WHY DOES SHE NEED TO HAVE AMNESIA?! SHE WAS A BABY AFTER ALL! AND THE FUDGE DOES THE KING AND QUEEN DYING HAVE TO DO WITH THE WHOLE KINGDOM EXPLODING. WHY DID IT EXPLODE IN THE FIRST PLACE?! WHAT DID MAGIC JUST KEEP IT FROM BLOWING ITSELF SKY HIGH?! THIS MAKES NO SENSE. THIS IS NOT SAD. THIS IS CONFUSING BEYOND BELIEF.
"With her kingdom gone she had to trek to Equestria, where she was tutored by Celestia herself. (Oh gawsh.) AFter many years of training she finally was elevated to the title of Princess, still unknowing of her tragic past."
B-But she was a baby! THE FUDGE IS GOING ON.
"One day Celestia finally told her the truth. At first she was stunned but grew angry with Celestia for not telling her sooner."
WHY WOULDN'T CELESTIA TELL HER. WHY IS SHE ANGRY. I DON'T I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAAAND.
"She leapt towards Celestia but her teacher threw her off. The two clashed; Iris almost defeating Celestia (-.-) but in a flash Iris lay on the ground paralyzed.
"Foolish girl. You cannot defeat me." Celestia said with a hiss in her voice. Iris stared up at her. And with that she was banished to the destroyed lands of her kingdom.
OK! Just because Chrysalis could do it doesn't mean your mess of an OC can! Jeez that was over powered.
Now I realize not all ALicorn OCs are like this buuuuut... a lot of them are basically. I have come across quite a few Rainbow Sparkly-kawaii-too-edgy-for-you! chiz in my time in the MLP fandom and I can honestly say...
They often leave me going like
So yea. I beg for the love of Celestia and Luna's beards for you to have normal pony OCs.
(Blue Turtle's tips on how not to make your alicorn/ pony OC not a Mary Sue! :D)
1. Keep your colors away from ~super rainbow kawaii sparkle!~ and SUPER EDGY PITCH BLACK RAGAGHHHHHH
2. Make your OC's back story not too over the top. (Making people feel bad for your char for five minute does NOT make your char good.)
3. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM BEING OVER POWERED IF THEY LIKE/ HAVE TO FIGHT.
4. If your OC is royalty then make it from another country because gosh dang it we already know Celestia and Luna re the Princess not your OC! (You get extra points for making your own country. It's very creative! :D)
5. Make sure their personality doesn't contradict itself! Do not put; (And I quote)
"Nice, Caring, Kind, Clumsy, but at times can be cruel and volatile"
then everyone is going
6. EXPLAIN YOUR CHARACTER'S ACTIONS! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ANY FARTHER! You can't just have your chars go off on a journey or end up in Trottingham for no reason! You leave your readers confused and angry sometimes!
7. And finally; Make your char interesting. Do not make it super bland and boring.
