Hello everyone, Wellspring here.
So yesterday, I stumbled upon this tumblr called Bro-Nie Read. And it so happens that they reviewed my fic, All About Rarity. I'm very happy that someone took the effort to read and criticize my fic and I would very much like to read the review. Unfortunately, it's in French (or "Fancy" as Applejack called it) and Google translate gives a vague approximation of what is written.
Here's the review:
Il est curieux de constater à quoi une simple scène dans l’œuvre originale peut conduire les fans de celle-ci. Prenez le dialogue entre Celestia et Discord au début de la saison deux : quelques lignes de texte, de la rancœur de la part du draconequus envers l’alicorne pour l’avoir transformé en pierre. Rien de plus.
Il n’en fallait pourtant pas plus aux fans pour souscrire à l’idée que les deux personnages se connaissaient depuis bien longtemps, et étaient amis – voire amants – avant que leurs vues politiques ne les opposent, mille ans avant l’ère de l’Harmonie moderne.
A partir de là, naissait tout le fandomat dislestien, avec toute ses œuvres, de Memory Lane à Discordantly, pour ne citer que les bandes dessinées, et un nombre impressionnant de fanfics.
Cela peut s’entendre toutefois : la scène est par nature, très interprétable. Pourtant, il existe le même effet, sur des scènes bien moins populaires. Prenez la fin de la saison deux, quand Rarity saute sur le bouquet de Cadence, lorsque le carrosse des nouveaux mariés quitte Canterlot.
En elle-même, la scène ne sert à rien d’autre que faire rire. Et elle réussit plutôt bien son but cela dit.
Mais la licorne est elle si empressée à se saisir des fleurs de la mariée ? Pour Wellsprig, auteur d’All about Rarity, la raison est simple : la styliste est tout simplement folle amoureuse de Shining Armor, et ne rêve que d’une chose : prendre la place de Cadence à ses côtés, d’où le vol symbolique du bouquet.
J’ai conscience que le pitch de l’histoire peut en déstabiliser plus d’un. J’ai moi-même encore du mal à me faire tout à fait avec ce postulat de départ.
Donc, dans All about Rarity, nous suivons donc la licorne, de son coup de foudre pour le grand frère de Twilight lorsqu’elle le rencontre au mariage, à tous ses efforts pour concrétiser cette relation, même si cela veut dire entamer un adultère. En effet, lorsque Rarity et le capitaine de la garde commencent à devenir amants, chacun d’eux est engagé auprès d’un autre poney. Shining auprès de Cadence, bien sûr, et Rarity, elle, a commencé à bâtir une liaison avec Applejack.
All about Rarity raconte donc principalement les efforts de la couturière pour garder son amant près d’elle, tout en conservant le secret, au risque de mettre en péril son amitié avec les autres Gardiennes de l’Harmonie.
Sur la forme, la fic est plus que correcte : la plume est bonne et l’histoire plutôt abondante. Mais elle souffre d’un défaut de chapitrage qui, in fine, la dessert amèrement. Concrètement, malgré des chapitres de quinze mille mots, ce qui est une taille plus que correcte, les événements donnent l’impression de se succéder à une vitesse folle. A prendre pour exemple le chapitre deux, où Rarity met fin à une grave dispute qu’elle a eu avec Applejack, se rapproche de Cadence, se rend à une fête donnée par Fancypants, se déclare à Shining, est repoussée, avant de se consoler dans les bras d’Applejack.
Même le chapitre est long, les événements font précipités. Et cela ne fait qu’empirer avec le temps.
Sur le fond…disons que la fic commence sérieusement à faire hausser les sourcils à compter du chapitre trois. Rarity se montre de plus en plus out of character, même si Wellspring fait son possible pour justifier cette évolution. Et de même, la répétitivité des actions lors des chapitres postérieurs (concrètement une scène de sexe/une scène narrative/une scène de sexe), nuit aussi à l’histoire.
Mais malgré tout, la fic arrive à accrocher. Et on en vient à attendre malgré tout la suite, ne serait-ce que pour voir jusqu’où peut sombrer Rarity dans l’immoralité, ou bien alors espérer la voir punie pour ses mauvaises actions.

"The chapter is long, and the events are rushed. And it gets worse as the fic goes on.
"The fic seriously starts to raise eyebrows from chapter three on. Rarity becomes more and more out of character, even if Wellspring tries [her? his?] hardest to justify this change. And the repetitiveness of plot points in the later chapters (sex scene/narrative scene/sex scene) also detracts from the story.
