Review: Equestia Girls *Possible Spoilers* · 5:20pm Jul 7th, 2013
Thank you RainbowCrashPP for putting it on YouTube so I didn't have to waste money watching it in a theatre.
Well....it was an experience to be sure.
Enough ponies to hold my interest. The plot of was half decent, no pun intended.
So all in all:
Don't get me wrong, I'm still against the idea of an Equestria girls spin-off series. We have more than enough shows trying to tell of the amusing exploits of high school, with or without magic and brony references.
Everything was better than expected, mostly because of how amusing it was watching Twilight make a fool of herself trying to figure out how to be human. The antics of her new human friends was entertaining too. As was watching the background to see how many humanized ponies I could recognise.
It had enough references to the TV show and the brony fandom put in to keep me watching.
I do like that derpy was in the movie, not just in the end credits as some have stated.
We do have, what could be, one of the coolest evil villains since Sombra in terms of fear and destruction caused, not to mention cool looks. A twist on the usual 2-dimentional villains, Sunset Shimmer's true motives aren't revealed until the climatic end-fight, rather than just be spelled out from the start.
But be warned, if you thought the series laid it on thick with the messages of how Friendship is Magic, that's nothing compared to the movie. They don't just shove it in your face, they prise your jaws open and ram it down your throat. Even compared to the series it was sickly sweet. Pretty much as bad as the original 80s show where we would see a villain reformed in the space of 3 seconds.
That's the main impression I get from the film, all the humanized characters we know and even the magical transformations that occur, just feel forced in so Hasbro can sell more merchandise, just like with the 80's show.
If it were to just stand alone maybe the movie could take a place in brony fandom, but the fact that it's going to get a series spin off out of it is really just a huge black mark upon its likeability as far as I'm concerned.
6 out of 10
Worth watching, if only once. Enough jokes and references to keep even the hardcore fans entertained. But it laid on the messages of Friendship a bit thick and I'm still against the thought of a spin-off series.
I agree on the spin off idea... Though on another note... I have my own idea on the "forgiveness" thing. Sunset didn't actually reform so much as realize she was in over her head and figured she'd have a better chance If she tried to play redeemed. So what we actually saw was crocodile tears, not real tears of regret... Is this likely to be true/cannon? Nope but I'm sticking to it!! XD
And I'd be willing to see it again with friends. ^\^
And I did enjoy the music. ^_^
