Thoughts on Bats! (episode) *Spoilers* · 2:58pm Dec 29th, 2013
I've been coming down had on episodes this season and it seems the majority of the fandom feels the same way.
But this episode was different. I actually liked it.
We had an interesting new animal, that actually looks frightening even though it only eats fruit.
In the past we've seen cute and cuddly bats: 
and we've seen the strangely adorable fruit bats:
But now we have a creature that is actually looks as bad as its reputation:
these ugly little mo'fos!
What I really liked about the episode was that it actually had a classic cartoon feel to it. It really felt like a bit of a call back to the classic cartoon golden era of the late 80's to mid-90's. So for me it was enjoyable and nostalgic.
There design wasn't all bright primary colours, there were shadows and creepy stuff, jumps and surprises. The characters gathered together for a common cause, something unexpected went wrong for not so clear and slightly complex reasons which has just made the problem worse. And by the end it's al back to normal....or is it?
Well yeah, it is. This was written by Merriwether Williams, queen of awesome non-continuity.
The Mysterious Mare Do Well - featuring a super hero which became loved by all and was never mentioned again.
Hearth's Warming Eve - introducing Windigoes , a powerful enemy which was never mentioned again.
Putting Your Hoof Down - fluttershy learning to say No
Dragon Quest - Peewee the phoenix, never seen or mentioned again until a tiny montage of photos in Just For Sidekicks
Wonderbolts Academy - Dash impresses the Wonderbolts, but its never mentioned again.
and now Bats! where Fluttershy could have become best vamp-pony but won't be, because its a Merriwether episode.
A little call back to previous cool stuff wouldn't hurt surely.
