The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Major Site Revisions · 6:52pm Mar 29th, 2012

Hey guys, I spent a substantial amount of time over the last 2 days working on a very big site revision that's been on the cards for a long time: the merging of the tracking and favourites system. There is now only a favourites system which basically replaces the old tracking system. All favourites were merged into the tracking table so all your old stuff is still there. You can also view another user's favourites now using the browse page format.

And on top of this, we've added what people (including myself) were using the tracking system for, a read it later list.

There's been a load of stuff changed so there's bound to be bugs, but this new system should prove to be a lot better soon I hope! Let me know what you guys think and if you find any bugs.

I've also consolidated a bunch of user related buttons into a single drop down menu with your name.

Oh, and people can't spam favouriting anymore :)

I was waiting for an explanation of this! Thanks!

"a read it later list"? THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! My bookmark-folder was getting humongous at this point! :pinkiehappy:
And now: Read ALL the fics! :yay:
-Glassed

Holy shit, awesome. I reloaded the page and first thought that I got logged out again, but the new revisions sound and are awesome.

Thank you for investing the time

//edit: perhaps you could move the entirely unread stories in the "Read Later"-list?
//edit no2: it unnerves me that I have some fics in my favorite list, which are completely unworthy of that name...
//edit no3: so, how does the feature-function work now?

"Read it later"-list? Swag! :moustache:

Featured stories were never based on favouriting anyway. So it makes no difference.

Ooooo, a read it later list.
...
It's finally happened!:pinkiegasp:
, Exactly what I used the track option for in the first place; What was it's original intended use I wonder...:rainbowhuh:

Mysterious maintenance explained, continue the good work Knighty:twilightsmile:

EDIT: Since some of you are doing it...I may or may not have a big "3247" chapters...I'm sure at least 2/3rd's of that are unread. I'm sorry writers, I'll work on fixing that!

...Also I seem to get bad gateway sometimes...huh

Was about to get all pissy until you mentioned the Read Later function, which is exactly what I was using Track for, so hey, cool beans.

One bug I've seen is when you hover over the Favorites button for an individual story, you get a broken image link. At least in Chrome.

Yeah I forgot to upload it. Fixed now!

I noticed the "people who liked this story also liked this one" was taken down apparently. And I thank you for that.

The only thing that ever did was show the most popular stories, ALL THE TIME. Literally, every story recommended, regardless of which story you viewed it from, led to the exact same five or six.
Personally, I'd love to see it return, but modified to show the most popular with similar tags.

Actually I only took it down temporarily because it needs some reworking but I'll probably need to knock the site offline to do it. I tried to do it a few days ago but after taking the site down for 2 hours and it still not finishing I gave up.

Sigh.... this makes me sad. But I guess its understandable... people are too fucking idiot to notice the difference.

Hey, at least I tried.

yay! Read it later button!!! Thank you!

48967

...what kind of reworking? :duck:

It wasn't people's fault. There WAS no read it later function so people understandably made use of it for that.

There also appears to be a bug where my "Unread Chapters" list is stuck on a number that never changes. I went through my list and made sure that everything's read, but it's still saying that there are 9 chapters unread. Not sure what I can do to help root cause that.

I kind of liked the old system since I could track stories and see how they worked out before I added them to my favorites list. But I love the read it later option. Excellent on that note. This will take a little getting used to...

I may have been the only person who actually used the tracking function for what it was intended - to follow stories. While I like the addition of the read-it-later tag, I kinda wish I could keep the stories I'm tracking and the stories I liked so much that I wanted to favorite them separate. I think the revisions are great - I'm just not sure it was necessary to merge the favorites and the tracked stories together into one big list. :unsuresweetie:

So the 'Read Later' button should be used for tracking now? K!
Will it let you know when new chapters are available?

48974

Same. I never got around to reading "It takes a Village" :twilightblush: because of reasons. Now I got a big 17 staring me in the face.

Yeah I think I've broken something there but I don't know what.

I'm so pro.

Much love for the Read It Later feature.

Not sure about the tracking/favorites being merged. I'll track pretty much anything that I'm even a little interested in, but (even though I never actually did this) if I were to use favorites I'd like to reserve it for a choice few stories that I really enjoyed.

Slightly related, a feature I've wanted for a while would be a way to receive notifications when specific authors submit new stories. Track by author instead of track by story if that makes sense. I thought that following an author did this, but some of the authors I've followed submitted stories with nary a peep from the Tracked stories counter. Apologies if there's already a way to do this that I've missed.

48985 If you watch a user, it already does that. Or at least, I think it should if it doesn't. I wouldn't know.

48977
Agreed with this. I liked it how it was since I could keep stuff I hadn't read in one list and stuff I'd finished but liked in another.

I'm sure I'll get used to this system soon enough though.

My favorite button has an "1" even when all the stories inside have been already read :flutterrage:

I was tracking two stories for later reading when this update was made. I got them on my "read later" list, but I can't get them off my dashboard. It may well be that I just need to wait for it to happen, but IF this is a bug, it needs to be addressed. Regardless, I love this feature.

Also, I can't say that I like your decision of merging tracks and favourites. It takes a much better story for me to favourite than to track.

NICE!

Love the revision. It's more clean, and I can really appreciate the fact that there is a link to my own profile on the topbar now :3.

And the 'Read It Later' feature is totally worth going though all my favorites.

48991
Ditto for me.

That "1" is...staring into my soul...I click it, but it won't go away...

...:fluttershyouch:

Oh, I just noticed - the notifications page (or at least mine) still has tracks and favourites as checkboxes

48958 partly what i used it for as well... that and i kinda left stories i read in the list so i'd know what i already read through

48995

He's staring into my soul and whispering me maddening thoughts of stories updating without me knowing because I think that 1 is still the "bug one" instead of a real one. :pinkiecrazy:

I just put all the fics I wuld read later but it all got to favorit! Why is it on favorit? I have not even started to read them!

Well thanks alot thier.
It would have made sense to turn all the tracks into read laters.
Now it looks like I've faved a lot of stuff when I was tracking.
Now I've got to sort over 240 stories around, so thanks a lot there.
Good day.:moustache:

Simplistic, but a little confusing at first.

One little thing: You might want to change the 'Read Later' icon because I think people will have difficulties seeing if it's clicked of not because the button is mostly white.

49001 This is exactly what I'm talking about. My number of favourited stories is nowhere near the number of all the stories I have ever tracked.

Sudden idea!
(One of) Knighty's next protect(s) should be addition of polls! That way authors could ask for input on their stories about something, groups can have an easier way of discussing certain things, and the such.

Now back on topic. Bugs aside, I'm not really enjoying the mix of the favorites/tracking. I do greatly love and appreciate the drop-down bar and "read it later," but I liked tracking stories being separate from favorites. If a story is really well done I'd favorite them. It just feels so restraining to have them both together.

49008
I know, I have 13 favs and 278 tracks.
Now i've got to move all the tracks over to read later.
Worse thing is that the number used to say how much is left to read, only works for fav.
Even worse is now people are going to look at stuff and think 'I like it, but it's not my favourite' so they aren't going to click the fav.
Fav= Masterpieces.
Track= Good/wants to see more.
They are not the same and should not be treated as such.
Good day.:moustache:

We decided there is no real point to separating the 2 concepts because of the meaning "favouriting" has taken online, in that it's basically a bookmark. It added needless complexity. Also polls are on the cards already.

in the forever infamus words of Stewie griffion: "i dont like change :applecry:"

now i get to spend my time figureing out how this works. woopie.

49014 Well that makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up!

Still, the change is slightly irritating. Guess I'll have to deal with it. :moustache:

49015
Same here pal.
278 bucking stories to move to the read later list.
Good day.:moustache:

While I'll admit my Favorites list wasn't exactly reserved for fandom-shaping masterpieces, I still preferred it when there was some separation between "Needs work, but still interesting" and "Holy crap, I love it!"

I'm liking the concept of a Read Later-feature, though, that'll come in handy.

49014 I can't agree with you here. I have never used it as a bookmark. The only reason I favourite stories is to provide a recognition to the authors. Only the best of the best would gain a favourite from me. A thumbs up would mean that I like it, and a track means I want more. It's three entirely different concepts that deserve to stay separate.

49025
Be good if the read later had a 'unread' chapters note on it like the tracks did though.
49029
Once again, same here.
Good day.:moustache:

Is there a way of viewing who's read the most words on the site?
Nice touch by the way.

The "Read later" list is nice. I used to use tracking for that too.
However, I don't agree with the complete removal of the tracking system.

It hardly seems appropriate to use favorites for stories you just want updates on, even if you don't necessarily think they are fantastic.

49032

The easy way is to sum up all the words of all the chapters that one has read. But that's very exploitable by simply clicking that you've read a chapter.
