On the Study and Application of Advanced Carnal Magic

Strange how the similar section on fimfiction and the stories within already know what I am publishing, given their recommendations.

I will have a new story up tomorrow! One of three planned for the immediate future. I'll likely have to post it while I am at work, as I am mentally enslaved to post stories at a very specific time in the day. I've titled this blog post--

    They Always Come Back...

    This is... a little awkward.

For the sake of being concise, I am going to try and keep this blog short short, which is not something I am very good at doing. I don’t talk at all in real life, and on the internet I talk far too much.

    untitled

I have no idea what I’m doing right now.

The cavalcade of thoughts I’ve gone through in the last hour were as varied as the types of sand. Pipe wrenches, garbage, books, family, screaming, job searching, Dunbar’s number, grilling, cats, soul-crushing apathy and anxiety, debts, arguments, swearing. A lot of things in a short amount of time.

Reader Poll: The Crafter's Name (CLOSED) · 1:15am Jan 9th, 2013

POLL IS CLOSED

I've been leading up to this for a while now, but I'm not sure how long deliberations are going to be. I understand some of you may be on vacation and not get this post for a week from now, so I'm posting it a little early.

I need to name the Crafter.

I've been using the term Crafter as an OOC placeholder name, just like "Abaddon" and "The Emperor" before I dropped their names in Chapter 17. As the Crafter is captured by the ponies, they don't want to call him "alien" or "you" or "Great Lord Xenu," they will want to give him a name that matches his traits.

And that's where you come in. YOU get to name the Crafter.

I have a few ground rules for this:
1. It must be site-appropriate. This is a given.
2. I can accept a pony name, a human name, or a Minecraft-related name for him. Yes, I am even willing to cement his name as Steve. Both of these tie into the third point.
3. You must provide me a valid explanation for why he deserves such a name. That means, no matter what you wish to call him, you must provide a logical explanation for the ponies to call him that. No matter the name, be it a pony name or a human name, provide a detail explanation or it will be rejected.
4. This is the Crafter's name. Make sure he likes it.
5. Make use of the thumbs up system here. If you like a fellow fan's name, thumbs up. I will use the top rated comments as finalists.

You may suggest name until the posting of Chapter 19. At that time, voting will close and I will post a second blog entry. I will gather a select group of names among the top rated and let the readers decide which one they like best (Unless you all horribly abuse the voting system). In Chapter 21, voting on the finalists ends and the Crafter will finally have a name.

Go for it! Give me some names!

Accepted names:
Cipher
Hephaestus
Enigma
Jeremiah
Note
Ferris
Darragh
Daedalus
Artificem
Leo
Landlord
Unknown
Forest
Survivor
Pickaxe
Prime
Wielder
Minecraft
Crafter
Steve

Anti-First Shield Activated. Also you should name him Joe, It usually is the name of people you don't know the name of.

Name: Steve
Reason: It's the name all minecrafters know and It is the actual name for him in minecraft so...yeah...

691744
I don't mind calling him Steve, but it's the ponies that are naming him, not me. Provide a reason the ponies to name him that, or a certain situation where that name might be valid, and your suggestion will be accepted.

691756 Pinkie...no arguement is now needed

Why not Minecraft? He mainly mines and crafts stuff from what he has mined. At the very least, somepony (or body) can drop it during the whole naming process.

Andreno #6 · Jan 9th, 2013 · · 2 ·

Definitely steve, if not "crafter"

I've actually grown on crafter, and it seems like something ponies would name him.

This guy should think that the Crafter's name be... I got nothing. Sorry for talking up a couple second of yer life folks.

691766
I still need more than that. There's a method to her madness. I need a contextual situation for him to be named that other than "Pinkie said so."

692094
Think about this from a writing perspective. I need this to be able to construct a coherant narrative and story. If I just start pulling stuff out of my ass, even for Pinkie, that's not going to make a whole lot of sense and will diminish the overall enjoyment. I need a thought process behind this.

692168 I get what you're saying but I got nothing...I give up...

I'd just stick with "Crafter". Captain Whatsherface heard Brimstone call him that during their conversation, plus he already trusts her the most out of anybody else. He might be a bit more accepting of it if it came from her.
Yeoman, out

Barricade looks at one of the notes he scribbles in his writable book, and notes that the crude drawing of a humanoid stick figure is labeled what appears to be the word "sTEvE?" though it's actually him trying to write his made-up language's version of "This is me."

As a result, she starts calling him Steve, and adds the ? as something like an in-joke or 'last name' whenever she's writing it, like fans of the series saying Doctor Who, instead of just The Doctor in the title.

693345>>692515>>691850
These three are possible and accepted. I've added them to the list

I'd avoid minecraft because its the name of the game. Anyone familiar with Minecraft would flinch a bit if it were ever a character name.

694429
Then vote on their posts. I've given all of you the power to decide his name.

694509

Oh, didn't realize you were using the thumbs up-down system for voting. Sorry about that then.

694663
That's fine. Honestly, I expected some kind of building or construction type of pony name by now. Oh well, I'm still running this poll for quite some time.

Dang, now I don't want to vote because I'll feel like I'm cheating if I vote for myself.
Yeoman, out

Why not name him Leo. The reason for this is, just like the famous Leonardo DaVinci, he is a master a many talents. He is a farmer, a warrior, a crafter, a miner, and a destroyer.

I dunno... Xenu would be kinda funny.

maybe a moon related name, because Luna was the one who was able to connect with him first? just an idea.

735723 I'm in full agreement with this fine gentleman.

735723>>735895

I'm not sure if it would be posible.

He is going to be named by the ponies, so it is necessary for them to come up with his name in a logical way, as said here 692168

For what I see, It would be very smart to go with this. 693345

Very ingenious indeed.

735944
There have been near human names in the show before, and I know a way to work this idea into my story. I'm not going to use it exactly as he states, but it can work.

Dove #25 · Jan 21st, 2013 · · 2 ·

Name: Ferris
Meaning: Iron Strong, Iron Worker (Comes from the Celtic Language)
Why: To represent the potential power that the ponies see in the crafter. (For example, his physical strength, stamina, willpower, etc.)
Also it means iron worker which will be a synonym for crafter.

I think his name should be Dante
If you search up his name, it says that Dante means lasting or enduring, pretty much what the Crafter does. Think about it, the main point of Minecraft is to survive for as long as possible (lasting) and to try and survive (enduring). He gets blown up, bitten, crushed, poisoned, drowns, falls great distances, gets set on fire, and somehow still survives. He's pretty much the definition of endurance. As to how they name him that, I don't know. It could be given to him when they are finally able to read his journal or some other way. I'm sure some other people can reply to this about other ways he can get his name.

735973
If you can point me to a valid entomological reference, your suggestion will be accepted

736086
As with human names, ponies have near equivalents in certain instances, and I can work it in. As with the previous comment, point me to an entomological reference and it will be accepted.

I'd say Crafter sounds the best I mean, it ain't any different from all these fallout 3/new vegas crossovers where they call the game character just 'Wanderer' or 'Courier'.

Darragh, it is an Irish name meaning strength and perseverance, which I think the Crafter shows, plus seeing as not many people, let alone ponies have heard something similar before, I think it would be a good name
.

I vote Herobrine.

From the background given to him, he is basically an NPC, that has never met a player. But a player might see his work around the world, work players say Herobrine made. He just needs to write it down, or draw it, and ponies get that out of it somehow.

Prime.
1) He's the first of his species so it could start as a classification and then lead to his nickname which eventually just becomes his name.
2) It sounds fucking awesome.

I would say that you name him Jeremiah.
I don't really have an entirely valid reason for it, even though the name Jeremiah actually means "sent by god."
I don't know applicable it is, but i put it up there anyway.

I'd name him one of the following:
-Crafter, because that's what he does and they know it. No other explanation necessary.
-Farlander, because that's what he is, and they've even named him that at some points.
-Skittish, meaning lively and unpredictable, and nervous. He has already shown how skittish he can be.
-Creeper, because it's hilariously ironic, and he was creeping around in earlier chapters.
-Bob, because he is a builder, and they somehow feel that there is a link between "Bob" and "builder" for creatures like him.
-Dirt Block, because he uses dirt blocks, and it seems fitting for someone like him. This one's more of a pony name.

But hey, that's just me.

736560>>736907
I can accept some of these names, but I ask you to separate each entry into separate posts so that they can be voted on individually.

ISKV #36 · Jan 22nd, 2013 · · 3 ·

Pickaxe - The tool he's most seen with (Not exactly sure story-wise) also pretty much an icon of the game. Also applies to any tool or weapon, as he is proficient in all of them.

ISKV #37 · Jan 22nd, 2013 · · 2 ·

Survivor - For his ability to survive whatever is thrown at him.

ISKV #38 · Jan 22nd, 2013 · · 2 ·

Weider - His ability to use tools.

Forest (One or two Rs) - He willingly goes into the Everfree and comes back out alive. Name also means Of the forest, or woodsman.

UNKNOWN - That's what his file's gonna say, might as well call him that.

ISKV #41 · Jan 22nd, 2013 · · 1 ·

Landlord - His ability to manipulate various materials in crazy ways lands him the nickname of "Lord of the Land" which is then shortened into Landlord.

736531
I can't find an official citation for that online. If you can provide me with a valid citation or entomological reference, your name will be added to the list.

736552
This one cannot be accepted.

737089>>737088>>737090>>737092>>737094>>737093>>736569
These have been accepted.

Steve because he is the first of all of us to start out our adventure in the Minecraft world we started out with him and we'll end with it as well plus its a pretty badass name ps: his skin is stuck into our mind and it Will be weird to have the skin of Steve and a different name

I suggest 'Artificem' it is Latin for The Architect, The Craftsman, or the builder. I would make it so Luna names him it because the ponies speak a Latin derived language and Luna speaks in a dialect which is older, thus closer to it's Latin origins. She's also VERY old, so she might know the language its self. Plus it just sounds Awesome.

737282
And this is accepted.

Suggested Name: Daedalus

Reasoning:
Now I know what you are all thinking right now, "Ugh Daedalus?! What is this...I don't even?" Sure its an odd name (got enough vowels for ya?) and its
from an ancient myth, but let me assure you that this is the perfect name for the beloved Crafter character. For the uninformed Daedalus was probably the most hardcore guy in all of Greek mythology.

For starters he was a legendary craftsmen and artisan of unparalleled skill, whose accomplishments are nothing to scoff at. First of all Daedalus is credited with creating the agalmata, which were moving statues of the Gods that were so incredibly lifelike that even famed Greek philosopher Plato himself couldn't fault them. Which is no easy feat when one considers Plato's infamous ability to nitpick everything...philosophers am I right guys?

Daedalus wasn't all guts and glory though, this guy had to use his impeccable crafting skills to solve many practical problems (much like a certain character "Wink Wink Knudge Knudge"). Whats that you say?! King Minos of Crete needs a place to send sacrifices to? Daedalus goes and designs/builds a flipping inescapable Labyrinth, complete with a blood thirsty Minotaur. Later on King Minos was so scared of Daedalus sweet skills that he imprisoned him out of fear. But what does Daedalus do? Does he freak out and give up? Hell no, this son of a bitch goes and crafts a pair of wings and flies to freedom. Eat your heart out Wright Brothers.

So why would the Ponies choose to name the Crafter "Daedalus" you might ask? Aside from the obvious connection of the skill sets and traits that these two characters share, that still leaves the issue of how the Ponies would make the name connection. The answer is so simple you probably haven't even realized it, but its okay I will let you know. The MLP universe is rooted in Greek mythology, Pegasi, Hyrdas, Tartarus, even Cerberus. Would it be such a stretch of the imagination to consider that a Daedalus type figure was once part of Pony mythology?

Okay folks so lets break this down so we are all clear.
1) Daedalus was a legendary artisan with amazing crafting skills
2) A parable for the consequences of ones skills and abilities
3) Believable connection for the use of the name

Alright thats all I got. Be a champion and vote for Daedalus

736259
Do you mean something like this?
http://www.babynology.com/otherorigins-farris-m27.html

That site kinda explains it.

Romero, since he regularly fights zombies, plus it'd make a cool if obvious reference.

Or you could call him Tank, since he tanks hits like a boss (dodges thrown shoe), and it's a Nazi Zombies reference.

Or you could call him Salem Lord, because that sounds cool and it's a (dodges thrown shoe) White Zombie reference.

I vote for Daedalus
