My favourite animated female characters · 10:22pm March 8th

Huzzah everypony! Since today is International Women´s day, I decided to do something I wanted to do for a long time, which is talk a little bit about myself, most specifically, talk about my favourite female characters in animation and how they inspire me. If you´d like, you could also discuss in the comments who are your favourite animated female characters and why! It would make the experience richer.

Without further ado, let´s see my favourite female characters!:

Fluttershy:

Why do I like her so much?: She´s my favourite pony! I identify with her a lot. And she shows that just because you´re shy, sweet, soft and feminine doesn´t mean that you´re not a strong woman. In fact, I would say she´s the fieriest! She´s resilient, defends and shows kindness to those in need, while also asserting herself, even if it took her time. She teaches that there´s nothing wrong with being innocent and sensitive and reindicates them as strengths because thanks to her innocence and idealism, Fluttershy is able to be imaginative and creative in solving problems and helping others. That´s why she´s the element of kindness. But she´s not stupid either! I think she actually sees through everycreature but plays dumb.

Twilight:

Why do I like her so much?: She´s my second favourite pony. I also relate to her, especially with the twilighting and the studying. She´s very human (or should I say ponyish?) and has a beautiful character development, and even if she´s the princess of friendship she still makes mistakes, just like all of us! I like that she teaches little girls to take joy in studying and learning about things you like. Don´t get me wrong, there has been countless times I wanted to drop everything due to frustration! But I am grateful to have studied so hard throughout my life.

Princess Luna:

Why do I like her so much?: My favourite princess! (along Twilight). She´s a complex character and I think a lot of people can relate to her on feeling lonely, jealous or misunderstood by people or being more introverted. She teaches us that with the help of loved ones we can heal from the past and we can use the lessons from our mistakes or experiences to help others. I love that she´s kind of a therapist in ponies´ dreams. It´s very inspiring!

Nala:

Why do I like her so much?: The Lion King is my favourite Disney movie since I was literally a baby. Nala has accompanied me through all my life, so of course I´m going to love her. Firstly, her design is gorgeous, both as a cub and as an adult; and secondly, I love her personality. I love how she called out Simba despite being a pair, teaching girls to communicate their feelings when their lover does something that upsets them without being afraid about it. Honestly, as I wish they had included and given Nala a bigger and more active role. For example, I would have loved a scene Simba thanking her for encouraging him because if it hadn´t been for her, he wouldn´t have come back, or more scenes with how life was for the lionesses in the pridelands, such as the live action did. And as creepy the deleted scene between Scar and Nala was, I kind of wished it was kept to teach little girls not to accept that behaviour and show that the lioness weren´t helpless. Even so, I still think she´s a strong character who doesn´t doubt to fight for her man!

Esmeralda:

Why do I like her so much?: I love how beautiful, but most importantly, kind and human she is. And I love how she retains some of her innocence despite having to struggle with discrimination, which we can see in her song God Help the Outcasts. Speaking of which, it just brings me to tears everytime because it´s about what being a Christian (or any other religion I would say), truly is. Esmeralda taught me not to lose sight on that and to see humanity in others. I think she really influenced my path on choosing a career focused on helping others. I know she´s not considered a Disney princess, per say, but if she was, she would be my favourite.

Belle:

Why do I like her so much?: Like Belle, my head is in the clouds all day! She and I share a big imagination and dreaminess. I was also the odd one out girl in a small town, which is kind of hard, because literally everybody knows you, whether directly or indirectly. What I also like about her is that she´s an example of a soft girl who´s capable of stablishing limits and calling others out when she´s disrespected, also teaching little girls not to stand harassment. Very important lesson!

Mulan:

Why do I like her so much?: She´s just so brave and selfless. She literally put her life at risk just so his father could live. Her story was and still is so inspiring to little girls. Her song Reflection is very deep and personal to those who cannot accomplish what society expects from them. I love how the movie displayed all the qualities that allowed her to be successful at war. Truly a good role model!

Elsa:

Why do I like her so much?: She accompanied me through rough times, and I can identify with her fear of hurting others and her feeling out of place. Also, at the time when everybody was obsessed with Frozen, I got my OCD diagnosis and seeing Elsa going through anxiety comforted me. I really appreciate that her personality is different to the rest of the princesses, being more serious and introverted. I´m more playful and sweeter than her but when I have to give advice or take care of others I´m just like Elsa. Plus, we both like thinking deep about things and trust our instincts. And honestly, I love her powers! Her design is also very gorgeous.

Mirabel:

Why do I like her so much?: She´s just so cute and creative! Many people can relate to her on being the odd one out and outsider of the family. But what makes me so attached to her is her empathy, which is what saves the day and not an amazing gift. Plus, it´s awesome to see a non stereotypical rendition of a girl of Latin American descent!

Tigress:

Why do I like her so much?: Firstly, she´s a feline and felines are my favourite animals (I have to thank The Lion King for that!). Secondly, she´s a very unique character, in my opinion. Although she has the reputation of being serious and cold, she´s actually a sweetheart who cares deeply about others, especially children and Po, considering she´s an orphan. Also, I love her design. She´s clearly feminine but without having exaggerated or creepy human woman features. Peak character design!

Katara:

Why do I like her so much?: She fought against those who said she couldn´t do things just because she´s a woman. She loves helping others and fiercely defends them while being kind. She has an excellent character development. Honestly, fans say she talks about her mother too much but if you saw your burnt mother´s corpse, wouldn´t it impact you? They also complain that she´s too bossy or motherly but let´s not forget that she was forced to take a caretaker role very young. Plus, there´s nothing wrong with being the mom of the group. In my opinion, she´s a great role model. And like Esmeralda´s case, as a mixed-race girl, I love seeing women of colour with so many qualities and humanity.

Luz Noceda

Why do I like her so much?: Another non stereotypical redition of Latinas! I relate to the struggles she had to fit in at school. The scene where she says all she wanted was to be understood… I felt that. She also grows a lot during the series, from being an adventurous cheerful girl to a wiser and mature powerful witch. Aaargh, why did you have to cancel it so soon Disney?!

Kitty Softpaws:

Why do I like her so much?: Another feline! I loved Puss in Boots as a kid and the relationship he had with Kitty. And Kitty as a character is amazing. She´s sassy and a bit cold, but that´s because she´s been hurt in the past and she grows in learning to trust. I love how in the second movie she has a bigger role and is not just the femme fatale or the love interest. And despite the problems they have, I love how Kitty and Puss sort out their problems and work as a couple, and are equals in their relationship. Communication and mutual respect is key, everypony!

What about you? Do you like any of these characters too? Let me know in the comments!
