I´m so proud! · 11:43pm January 23rd
So the Oscar nominations came out, and while there are many surprises and disappointments (*cough* Margot Robbie not nominated for best actress and Greta Gertwig not nominated for best director *cough*), I´m happy to say that two movies from my country are nominated .
- In first place, there´s Society of the Snow by J.A Bayona! It´s nominated for Best International Future Film and Best Hairstyling. Let´s give everyone involved a huge round of applause 👏 👏 👏
I don´t know if any of you have watched it, but it´s about the plane accident in the Andes Mountains in 1972 and the story of the survivors. I tried watching it this friday with my sister but I had to stop after the accident scene due to the anxiety and angst it caused me (it´s very graphic, I warn you). Hopefully I can recontinue it this week, but if I survived The Impossible I can survive this too.
Speaking of that movie, I recommend it if you liked Society of the Snow. They´re both from the same director. It tells the ordeal of a Spanish family that went through the tsunami in the Indian Ocean of 2004 (it´s also very graphic and angsty, but very beautiful nonetheless).
But coming back to Society of the Snow, I´d love for it to win, but I hear The Zone of Interest is the favourite. Either way, I´m happy Bayona got this nomination. As for make up and hairstyling, it´ll probably go to Openheimmer, but at least I´m glad Ana López-Puigcerver´s, David Martí´s and Montse Ribé´s work is recognized by the academy.
-And in second place there´s Robot Dreams by Pablo Berger! It´s nominated to Best Animated Feature. Another huge round of applause to everyone involved! 👏 👏 👏
The movie, based on the graphic novel by Sara Varon, tells us the story of a dog living in the 80´s Manhattan that builds himself a robot and befriends it to the point of being inseparable. Unfortunately, he has to leave the dog in the beach at one point.... (don´t know if this is spoiler, I´m just writing what the synopsis says. Plus, I still haven´t watched the movie but I plan to).
Now, this category will most likely be won by Miyazaki´s The Boy and the Heron (which is amazing by the way!), but I´m glad spanish animation is recognized. Also, it´s great to see two non-American or English-language movies in this category. Don´t get me wrong, I have nothing against american animated movies, they´re great too! But international animation is interesting as well.
I have lost a lot of respect of the Oscars as accolades, but it´s amazing when things like this happen. But what do you think?
