Old Idea, What Would it Be Like if I Went w/It?

So, when the story was still less than ten chapters, when Twilight and the crew of the HMS Pinafore saved Spike from Finn in the skirmish that ended in Zecora's death, I honestly thought of Spike invoking an old Equestrian naval law, essentially challenging Twilight to a duel for control over the HMS Pinafore. In effect, Twilight would have too much honor to refuse the challenge, but would be too worried about hurting Spike in order to fight seriously, and Spike ends up winning and takes control of the HMS Pinafore, essentially rewriting their orders to match the ones that Celestia gave them much later. Basically, it would have ended in the Mane 6 joining Spike's crew through honorable combat and a mix of naval laws and Equestrian traditions instead of Celestia realizing she's overprotective. What would you guys have thought if the story went through such a route? Luckily, my proofreader at the time talked me out of going down that route, but I'm still curious as to what the story would be like now if I'd gone down that path. What do you think?
