Some De-Ponyfication · 6:20pm Sep 29th, 2023

In case anyone wants to do a compare/contrast thing...

The latest issue of a magazine called Journ-E: The Journal of Imaginative Literature has a story of mine called "Queen of the Mushrooms." Any resemblance to "A King and Queen of Infinite Space," which I'll link this blog post to, is purely intentional, I assure you.

Journ-E is 180 pages of just about everything a genre fan could want, and I mean just about everything. It's divided into 5 sections—Adventure, Detectives, Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction—and each section's got stories, poems, and non-fiction related to that section's subject. And not just new stuff, either: the Detective section in this issue reprints Raymond Chandler's classic essay "The Simple Art of Murder" in which he lays out his ideas about how to write a proper mystery, and the Horror section has an article by Edgar Allan Poe in which he goes into detail about the process he followed when writing "The Raven."

The story itself's been completely de-Ponyfied along the lines of what I did several years ago to turn Half the Day is Night into Morning, Noon & Night, though changing a short story proved a little trickier. With the novel, I could add 25,000 words to build a new world for the plot to wend through, but here, I figured I had a couple hundred words at most to suggest a fantasy world and a previous relationship between these two characters that would let them do what needed to be done. I had my doubts, but the editor said it worked, so who am I to argue? :twilightblush:

Thanks!

I've been waiting for Mind's Eye Publications to post the free, online sampler just in case my story was included in it, but it isn't. Still, if folks are interested in an e-version of v.2 no.2, the info for getting one from the publisher for $5 is at the bottom of the page where the samplers are displayed.
