You May Not Know This, But I'm a Huge TCG Nerd · 9:26pm Nov 17th, 2022

Okay, hear me out:

Fimfiction...

The Trading Card Game.

Play with all your favourite fimficcers, now in card form! Each one has unique abilities that will help you climb the featured box and achieve that sweet, sweet horsefame!

The game is played with a forty-card deck of author cards and effect cards, plus a separate pile for story cards.

Each player has two fields, each with one writer slot and three editor slots, each of which can take one author. Cards would have a variety of effects that could be active/inactive depending on what slot they're in. The authors in the editor slots provide bonuses to the author in the writer slot. The first author you play each turn is free; subsequent ones can be played but must be paid for in Energy.

You can activate the author in the writer slot on your turn by paying their Energy cost to generate a *story* card specific to that author. Stories go into the Feature Box (which would probably be shortened from ten slots to maybe five or six). Each turn that your story is in the Feature Box, you generate one Energy Token. If your story is at the top of the box, you get two. Energy Tokens can be spent to play better cards. Energy is accumulated across turns, and you automatically gain one energy on your turn.

Stories start with a given 'Heat' score, ranging from 1-6 and represented by a six-sided die. They lose one Heat per turn. Stories are ranked in the box by their Heat. Stories may also have their own effects while in the box. A story is removed from the box once it runs out of Heat.

Once an author is activated, they are removed from play. You can either move an author from an editor slot into the writer slot or play a new author on your turn.

There are also effect cards, which can be played by paying their Energy cost. These would have a variety of effects. For example, you could have a "Seattle's Angels" card which would exhume a story from the graveyard back into the box, or a "Moderator's Intervention" card, which would remove a story from the Box immediately. A "Ban" card could be used to prevent a player from activating an author. A "Royal Canterlot Library" card could allow you to search your deck for a specific author card. Etc.

The game ends once a player has accumulated 20 Energy tokens. When this happens, they are officially horsefamous, and are the winner.

This is just something I thought of on my lunch break today and wanted to post about. Not intending on doing anything with it currently, I just thought it was a fun exercise. Lemme know what you think!

Y'know, I spent some time last night coming up with card ideas for this (might post some of them later, why not) and I now have both a deeper understanding of why you do your card blogs and a greater respect for your ability to do so.

It's fun, but it does take time and effort.

Every horsefamous author reading this having the same thought; "Every iteration of my card feels like it could be horribly offensive or embarassing, but the alternative is not being included."

When this card enters the Feature Box, you lose the game, your opponents lose the game, no one is a winner, and you all feel bad. Nice job, idiot.

:rainbowwild:

But for real, if anyone has a problem with their cards, I'm absolutely open to hearing them. This is supposed to be a fun experiment, and I don't want anyone to feel put out because of it.

(Also, incidentally, the only reason you didn’t get a card yet is because your story would have to be Moonfic, and I still haven’t read it, so I don’t know what its ability would be. Maybe returning a card from exile? I’ll try to fix that soon.)

This is the hardest I've ever laughed while making a face like I'd bitten into a lemon, incredible work

Idea for an effect card

Jinglemas
Target player reveals their hand, and you pick a story card. That player discards that card. You do the same.

Basically, you give up a story card so that another player also loses a story card, kinda like Jinglemas!
