Prologue: Flight School

They were at it again; Those three colts were once again making fun of somepony else. Then again i wasn't surprised, this wasn't the first time they've done this.They've bullied me, others, even my friend Rainbow Dash. but by now i was sick of it sick of the fact they always got away with it, i hate bullies and these guys were now exception.

Today they were making fun of a small filly she had yellow fur and long pink hair, the emotions on her face were a mix of terror and fright, That's when i stepped in. "Okay guys cmon leave her alone" i said. The three colts turned to me, the leader of there group or so i assumed spoke up "oh and i suppose your going to make us?" I moved in front of The yellow furred filly, i was about to reply when from above "no but i will". i looked up to see rainbow dash gliding down and stopped next to me. "oh look its Rainbow Crash" one of the colts taunted. There was a big argument and finally Rainbow challenged them to a race. "Okay tomorrow at noon" said the lead bully. "sounds like a deal" Rainbow Dash replied. After the colts left Rainbow turned to the Yellow filly to make sure she was alright, then flew off to practice for her race tomorrow. I started to trot away then turned around to see the Yellow filly had done the same we stayed like that for a few minutes then went our separate paths.

The Time arrived for Rainbows Race. I sat my self near the front stands, the race was about to begin. As i looked around i saw the the 4 ponies were lined up at the starting line. as I looked even farther I was surprised to see that the yellow filly from yesterday was holding the checkered flag. Then she swished it through the air and the 4 ponies burst forward. However, as they passed the yellow filly she lost her balance and fell off the cloud at first i wasn't worried but when she didn't come back up i jumped off the cloud and sped down as i had expected she was plummeting towards the ground below. I got closer and closer then I suddenly stopped, i blinked a couple of times to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me a large group of butterflies had caught the young filly and slowly brought her to the ground. as i touched down near by i realized she had begun to sing, i watched mesmerized. However i was know out of my trance when i heard a huge explosion I looked up to see a wave of Rainbow explode in the sky and i immediately thought "Rainbow Dash". When I looked back at the filly I saw that the animals had scattered and she was going around telling them it was safe now, and much to my surprise the came out and as she lay down on the grass a flash of light came from her flank and when i looked over a trio of butterflies had appeared.

After watching all this happen i flew back towards Clouds dale Relieved that the filly was safe. when i got up there a colt looked over and said "hey Storm congrats you got your cutie mark!" i looked down to see a Lighting Bolt with a pair of wings jutting out on each side, i laughed out loud as this realization hit me i had finally earned my cutie mark.

Chapter 1

The Thing About Griffons

I yawned as I awoke from my good nights sleep, I stretched my wings as I got out of bed. As i opened my curtains The View of Ponyville filled my window In the distance i could see Sweet Apple Acres, closer to town I could see the large tree which housed the town library, Next to that was Sugar Cube Corner. As I gazed over Ponyville i saw a strange cloud house off in the distance it reminded me of home, of Cloudsdale. I snapped out of my Trance and went downstairs to begin my day.

That afternoon I was on my way home when all of a sudden I noticed a large group of ponies. As I came closer i heard somepony yelling, finally I broke through the crowd and what I saw displeased me. Standing there was a Griffon in front of it was a small yellow Pegasus with a pink mane, the griffon was yelling at the small pony, the mare looked terrified. I recognized the mare from somewhere i racked my memory trying to remember, then i saw her cutie mark a trio of butterflys, and this something clicked inside my head. Flight school i thought then it all came back to me The bullies the fall the sonic rainboom and when I got my cutie mark. I sighed as i thought to my self "some things never change". I stepped forward "HEY BIRD BRAINS" I yelled at the griffon, the griffon turned around and looked at me. "excuse me" she said. "why don't you leave the lady alone" I said as I moved in front of the yellow mare. "oh why don't you make me" she said swinging her claw at me. I ducked "now lets not make this messy" I said and of course griffons being the impulsive creatures that they are did exactly the opposite, she charged me. I sighed as I turned around and bucked as hard as I could. "WHAM" she went flying straight into a wall. I turned to the yellow mare, "you all right" I asked she shook her head yes, "say whats your name" I said. She was about to reply when suddenly the look of terror appeared on her face again. it only took a split second for me to realize what scared her, "oh Buc-" I never finished my sentence cause at that moment I was slammed and was sent skimming across the ground. I got up and wiped my mouth blood stained on my fur, now i was angry, I smiled "griffon you just messed with the wrong pony" I said then I charged.

It was a short fight but it was brutal, when it was over the griffon had a black eye and had patches of feathers missing all over her body, "i will get ya back for this mark my words you measly pony" she yelled, then she flew off. the crowed cheered I limped over to the yellow mare "that wasn't so bad" i said then I blacked out.

I slowly opened my eyes as i regained consciousness. once i had fully opened my eyes i sat up and scanned the room trying to determine where i was. From what i could tell i was in Ponyville hospital. Suddenly, i felt something rub against my back legs, i looked down only to see the yellow mare that i had met earlier, her forelegs lay like a pillow underneath her head her wings were tightly wrapped around her as the rest of her body lay near the end of the bed. I watched for a time seeing her rise and fall as she inhaled and exhaled. i had to admit she looked cute when she slept. I then shifted so as to get into a more comfortable position, unfortunately the caused her to awaken.

The Yellow mare rubbed her eyes as she woke up from her little nap. However, as soon as she looked at me, her pupils shrank down to about 3 times its original size. "Oh my i am so sorry i didn't mean to- i just- I'm sorry!" she said as she panicked, then by accident she fell off the bed and landed on the floor in front of it. "are you okay?" i asked while trying to suppress a laugh. her head popped up "um I'm fine" she replied. "Sorry about that" she said, "whats there to be sorry for?" I asked. "Um i-i don't- im sorr-" i stopped her "its ok you don't need to say sorry".
An awkward silence settled for a few minutes before i asked "so i never caught that name", she looked up and stared at me as if trying to understand what i was saying "oh um yeah my name is..." She mumbled the last couple of words. "I am sort i didn't quite catch that" i said. Then she spoke up "um my names Fluttershy". "What a cute name" i said, the comment made her blush the she smiled at me "thanks". "Hold on a sec i recognize you" i said "hmm?" Fluttershy said looking at me in confusion. Yeah now i remember you and i went to flight school together!" I said excited, Flutters eyes opened wide "oh my gosh your right i remember you now, i never got to thank you though" she said. Now it was my turn to give her a confused look "for what?" I asked "for getting rid of those bullies" she replied. " well it wasn't just me, Rainbowdash also helped". As soon as i said her name the door burst open and a group of about 5 ponies galloped into the room surrounding Fluttershy i heard mixed voices of worry. I smile realizing these were her friends. The i noticed some in the crowed of ponies i saw a rainbow colored mane, there was only one pony i knew that had a rainbow mane. "Rainbowdash?" I asked, a head popped out of the mass of ponies, it was Rainbowdash. It took her a moment to recognize me the her eyes it up, "StormWing?".

"Hey dash Whats up long time no see" I said excitedly, "yeah same to you what are you doing here Storm" she said just as excited. "well I just moved here from Cloudsdale and as soon as I trot out my door on my first day here there's a problem" I replied. "what happened?" Dash asked a curious look on her face. "well I was troting around town when I heard somepony yelling, so I galloped on over to see what all the excitement was about and when I got there I saw Fluttershy here being bullied by a rather large griffen so I stepped in to stop her, I did get the griffen to leave but at a cost" I said as I looked down at my bandaged side. "wait did you say Griffen?" Dash asked sounding slightly alarmed. I nodded slowly not sure what dash was getting at. "oh my gosh that was Gilda!" then she turned to Fluttershy "I am so sorry Fluttershy I didn't know how much of a jerk she'd become", Flutters only smiled and told dash that it was alright.
"woah woah woah you mean to tell me that was Gilda from flight school?" I asked in surprise. "yep shes definitely grown alot that's probably why you didn't recognize her" dash said in reply. I shook my head at the thought.
when I looked up again i was surrounded by the ponies that had rushed into the room earlier. "so dash you gonna introduce me to your friends?" I asked "oh right" she turned to her friends.
She went around introducing all of her friends; Applejack, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Twilight Sparkle. I looked back at Rd "you always seem to make friends no matter where you go" I said with a grin. Rainbow beamed proudly "well I mean I am awsome you know" she stated. I rolled my eyes she hadn't changed one bit. Nurse Redheart then entered the room, "ok visiting hours are over" she said. As the ponies filed out Rainbow Dash waved and said "see you later Stormwing". I waved back, then just as the last of the ponies left (which happened to be Fluttershy) she looked back and mouthed "thanks". I smiled at her and mouthed "your welcome", she blushed at this and left the room hurriedly.

Days began to pass by quickly in the Ponyville hospital, But each day around lunch time Fluttershy would come in with a picnic basket and we would eat lunch together at my bedside. We would sit there eat and talk or at least I would talk considering FLuttershy was so shy, but she would listen and absorb all I told her.
So this continued for a week ,until they finally released me. It was early evening when they did, I remember trotting out of the hospital waving back and thanking the ponies who took care of me. Then I turned around and was going to head home, but was surprised to see Fluttershy waiting outside. She stood next to a tall oak tree as she gazed at the sky above with a look of loathing? Confused for only a second I trotted up to her , "hey Fluttershy" I said as I came close. She nearly jumped up in the air out of surprise then she realized who it was and relaxed. "sorry I didn't mean to scare you" I said scratching the back of my head with my hoof. She smiled "oh that's okay, umm I-i wanted to ask you something" she said. "go ahead" I replied. she mumbled a sentence. "I'm sorry what was that?" Finally she spoke "would you like to have dinner at my place tonight?" she blushed. I was taken back by the question, now it was my turn to blush "uhh umm sure yeah ok that sounds great!" I said with excitement. Fluttershy's eyes lit up and a big smile spread across her face. "say 7?" I asked, she nodded yes. "ok see you then I suppose" I said. After that we parted ways, and as soon as I was sure that she was out of earshot I leaped into the air with yelling "YES!"
A few hours later I arrived at Fluttershy's house. I knocked on the door. "KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK". Fluttershy opened the door slowly and after making eye contact with me she opened the door wide with a smile inviting me in. The evening went by quickly. Fluttershy had made a wonderful carrot stew. As we ate Angel (Fluttershy's pet rabbit) sat upon my shoulder watching both of us eat and often looking between Flutters and I. "That's rather odd" Fluttershy said. "what do you mean, is there something on my nose?" I asked, she laughed "no its just Angel has never been this Friendly around visitors, he's usually kind of rude". "well I guess I'm just a real likable pony" I said with a chuckle. Fluttershy blushed laughing with me, This made me smile and we laughed even harder.
After dinner we walked out into the field just outside Of Fluttershy's house. The sky was clouded and the air was cool. "Look up" I said to Fluttershy, she did and as if on cue the clouds cleared reveling the stars above. She gasped, "they're beautiful" she said I smiled and gazed at the stars with her. We lay down in the grass gazing at the stars, I then turned to Fluttershy, "can I ask you question?" I said. "she turned to me "go ahead" she said. "earlier today when I was walking out of the hospital I saw you gazing at the sky with loathing, what was that about?" She sighed, "well after I came to Ponyville I had nopony to teach me how to fly so I lived life on the ground being able to hover at least". I looked back at he sky we lay there in silence for a bit when I spoke up. " I could teach you how to fly". We both sat up as She turned to me in surprise, "really you would?" she asked excitement in he voice. "Yeah of course why not" I replied. "I don't know I mean what if I mess up?" she said. "so what we are the only ponies around here, If you mess up I wont judge you". I Gazed into her eyes and she into mine, she then put on a brave face and nodded yes.
Sometime later we were soaring through the sky wingtip to wingtip. "this is amazing!" she said, "you're doing great keep it up" I said we dashed and dived soaring gracefully through the air. Then abruptly she slowed down until she had fully stopped, i turned around to make sure she was okay. I flew up and began to hover in front of her, "you alright?" I asked. She smiled and looked up at me, "StormWing you are the nicest pony I have ever met, thank you" she said giving me a hug. My cheeks turned red, as I hugged her back. "Hey Fluttershy, there's something i need to tell you" I said, She cocked he head to one side "yes what is it" she replied. Gathering up what bravery I had I spoke "Fluttershy I've had feelings for you for a long while but those feelings haven't been as strong as they are tonight". Fluttershy's cheeks turned bright red, but slowly her surprised expression turned into that of a smile, And without warning she leaped forward kissing me right on the lips. It was a short one and when she broke off she spoke "ohh storm iv'e been waiting for you to say that ever since we met" the realizing her sudden outburst she backed off and the look that i knew so well appeared on her face "oh uhh sorry about that" she whispered. Then I flew close to her, behind us the moon's brilliant light shown and from anypony who might have been on the ground to them it would of seemed like we were right in the middle of the moon. I smiled lifting Fluttershy's chin with my hoof "the only thing you need to be sorry for is stealing my heart" I said and with that i kissed her, and this time for longer.
Afterwords we landed and lay in the grass cuddling each other for the next hour or so then we headed back to Fluttershy's house and I stayed the night there. As I lay there next to Fluttershy with my hoof wrapped around her holding her close I looked out the nearby window, I smiled and thought to myself "everything is perfect" then fell asleep.

Bullies

After our adventures from the night before, we decided to spend the entirety of the next day together. It was around 2:30 now and the whole day had gone better than I could have imagined, however I guess the universe just loves messing with me cause this happiness didn't last forever.
Fluttershy and I were walking through the town square, the weather was great the sun was shining, one really couldn't ask for more. That all changed real fast, I suddenly felt the air pressure change, the air temperature around us dropped a few, and a large shadow cast over me. It only took me a split second to realize what was happening, and with swift action I pushed Fluttershy out of the way as a large figure slammed down on top of me. I was pinned to the ground by a large claw, as to who the owner of the claw was, well as you can probably guess it was Gilda, but this time she wasn't alone. Two more large griffons dropped down behind her. "hey dweeb i'm back and a brought a couple friends to the party hope you don't mind" she sneered. A smile grew over my face "the more the merrier" I responded and with that I freed myself from her claw and smashed her beak with my hoof drawing blood. She stumbled back, "get the dweeb!" she yelled to the other griffons. They turned towards me grinning, I gritted me teeth prepared for a fight. It was quiet the wind passing through like a ghost town, the griffons stared at me with their beady eyes, and I stared back.Then they made the first move, the first griffon charged me the second close behind. As soon as they were in range I spread my wings and with one powerful flap i created a gale wind which knocked them back into the dirt (they didn't call me StormWing for nothing). However almost immediately after hitting the ground they got back up and flew at me. Grabbing my wings they pinned me against a wall while Gilda began to beat the crap out of me, punch after punch I took pain bursting through my body almost to a point where I couldn't take it anymore, then it happened. Fluttershy galloped out of the crowd of ponies that were watch tear streaming down her face "no leave him alone!" she cried pounding on Gilda's leg. Gilda looked down at the small yellow mare "scram she said, then she smacked Fluttershy sending her flying into a building.
This cause the rage inside me to explode my eyes burned with a new fire. "LEAVE HER ALONE" I yelled breaking free of the two griffons with incredible power. I then shot forward uppercutting Gilda in the face I yelled as I swung one punch after another but even my burning passion to protect Fluttershy wasn't enough. She then caught one of my swings in her claw "you're gonna get it now dweeb" she said spitting blood into the dirt beneath her. With one swing she tossed me into a near by building and this time I heard a loud "CRACK" and pain burst through my body from my foreleg.
So this was how I was gonna go huh? I couldn't move my body I was spent no more energy to get up and fight. I looked up to see the townsfolk helping Fluttershy up. "I'm sorry Fluttershy I failed you" I said to myself softly. The three griffons approached me slowly, Gilda was grinning "end of the line dweeb" she said.
Suddenly a great light blinded me I covered my eyes, when the light faded I looked up. Standing there was Princess Celestia her eyes were glowing, and the expression on her face was pure rage then she spoke in the royal Canterlot voice "GILDA THE GRIFFON, YOUR ACTIONS HERE ARE UNACCEPTABLE IN MY KINGDOM AND YOU WILL BE PUNISHED". Gilda and the other griffons looked terrified backing away slowly. Celestia continued "YOU WILL LEAVE MY KINGDOM AND SHALL NOT RETURN UNTIL YOU HAVE LEARNED YOU LESSON, NOW GO!" and with that Gilda and the other griffons got up and flew off stumbling over each other in the process.
Fluttershy limped over to me and helped me up. Celestia turned to me and I looked up at her. I bowed and said "I am forever in your debt princess". Celestia smiled kindly "Your actions have already repayed that Debt" she said. I looked at her confused, she smiled again "the way you jumped to protect the one you loved, i sense that if it came to it you would give up your life to save those you love or hold dearly, today you showed the ultimate action of kindness". I smiled "thank you princess" She smiled and in a flash of light she was gone. "now lets get you to the hospital" Fluttershy said, "just a flesh wound" I said She gave me a look of anguish, I laughed "just kidding". She smiled at that then we headed for the hospital.

Epilogue
Several Years Later...

I opened the door to my house and was immediately greeted with the smells of Fluttershy's cooking. "daddies home!" the sound of 2 excited foals rang in my ears. Two foals both Pegasus, entered the room, Tulip a filly with yellow fur and a pink and white colored mane, the second was Whitehoof, a colt with black fur and a white nose his mane gray. "daddy!" they yelled with excitement, I picked up my two foals in my wings and nuzzled both of them "how are my two favorite foals?" The giggled as I tickled them. Then a soft voice came from the kitchen "dinners ready". "okay go wash up for dinner" I said letting the foals free of my grasp, they rushed to the bathroom. I trotted into the kitchen, Fluttershy stood there with a wooden spoon in her mouth stirring soup in a pot. She set the spoon down and trotted over to where I was standing "welcome home" she said giving me a kiss "smells good" I said, she smiled "go sit down with the kids" she said.
We had all sat down and were just about to start when there came a knocking at the door. "who could that be?" I said getting up form the table. I opened the door and was surprised to find a griffon waiting for me, it was Gilda. "hey" she said, "uhh hi" I replied. "listen about what happened all those years ago" I didn't let her finish "its alright whats happens in the past stays in the past". She smiled at that "uh ok well i got to get going" she said, as she flew off I waved and she returned the wave. I closed the door behind me, "who was that honey?" Fluttershy asked. I sat down at the table, "just an old friend" I replied me hoof feeling the scar across my chest that I had received those many years ago. I smiled "don't worry about it".
