For most of the cities and townships in the land of Equestria, the times during sunrise and sunset were fairly beautiful moments to witness upon looking up into the skies. The tranquil transitions between night and day usually unveiled a plethora of colors and hues among the clouds above, while leaving the streets below shrouded in shadowy darkness. Some might see that sort of contrast as a willing compromise for the sake of the beauty above; meanwhile, others may say that it’s nature’s way of keeping ponies optimistic, giving a subtle suggestion to keep your head up in the darkest of times. However, for the newly revitalized city of the Crystal Empire, the times of dusk and dawn were usually when the streets were at the peak of their potential in beauty.
Since most of the Crystal Empire was built upon the unique crystals and gems that founded the city, the magic-made structures served as a beacon for the sun and moon whenever they arrived. During the times those celestial forms were exiting and entering from view, the entire Empire would be shining brightly as the magic-made crystals caught onto that illumination. Instead of any ominous shadows or darkness plaguing the streets each night at sunset, the Crystal Empire’s shimmering roads would be glistening with a warm glow with the aid of Celestia’s setting sun. And for many ponies who either lived or visited the one-of-a-kind city, witnessing such a moment of shining beauty every twilight was truly a sight to behold.
That was, except for one particular pony who usually spent his twilight hours (as well as most other hours of the day) secluded in his humble abode with the curtains drawn and the door locked.
Instead of savoring the serene beauty of the glowing streets outside, the orange unicorn known as Sunburst was laying on his sofa relaxedly. The thick curtains covering his windows were keeping his book-infested home in near darkness; however, the stallion had more than enough candles situated around to give the living space a comforting glow of its own. While he wouldn’t have minded witnessing the common occurrence of sunset like the other ponies, Sunburst was fairly content with the newest novel he had picked up from the bookstore earlier that week; while he wasn’t particularly into romance novels, the unique interspecies pairing featured was more than enough to keep him hooked for most of the day.
Upon reading a specific passage which contained a cheeky reference to the author’s previous works, Sunburst chuckled while a light blush was spread across his cheeks. “Jeeze,” he muttered with a shake of his head, “even when this guy is writing ‘safe-for-work’ content, he isn’t afraid to bring up his dirtier stories, huh?”
Even though that question wasn’t directed towards anyone specifically in his home, Sunburst didn’t feel too embarrassed with saying that out-loud. Given his borderline-introverted personality, it wasn’t uncommon for him to feel more comfortable by himself as opposed to others. While he certainly didn’t mind befriending ponies (particularly those like Twilight, Starlight, and their other friends in Ponyville), the stallion knew that it could sometimes be rather taxing to stay so social for so long. And given his duties as the Crystal Empire’s Royal Crystaller, he had come to realize over time that he was able to reach his limits rather easily given the circumstances.
In fact, his recent binge of fluffy male-on-male romance stories (as well as the more risquè novels the author also wrote rather frequently) had been caused by a recent incident during his last visit at the Crystal Empire’s castle. While he knew it wasn’t anypony’s fault, and especially not Princess Cadance's, Sunburst was thrown through a big-enough loop to need a few days to overcome his lingering anxieties on the matter. He made a mental note to send Cadance an apology letter for his absence, despite being approved for a couple days of leave to recuperate. However, even though he was feeling rather alright at the moment with his book, the stallion had to bite his bottom lip every minute or so as he tried to avoid thinking back to the Princess’ insistent questioning on him.
Oh, come on, Sunburst… You’re telling me that none of Twilight’s friends caught your interest?~
Cadance may have been the Princess of Love, but Sunburst couldn’t have blamed her for having that misconception about him when she asked that question last weekend. Upon realizing how much he was thinking back to that moment, the unicorn groaned annoyedly when he went back to re-read from the top of the damn page. Unfortunately, his recollection of Cadance's replies continued to re-play in his mind.
Oh! M-My apologies, Sunburst. I shouldn’t have assumed what you were into. Ummm… are there any stallions that caught your eye then? It seems like in a city like this, you’d have quite the number of options~
Another sigh came out through the pony’s nostrils, and his muzzle skewed as he was forced to stop reading altogether. He wanted to at least finish this chapter, but his mind was soon plagued with that awkward encounter that made him retreat to his home in the first place. It was one thing to “socialize” with a pony at a fancy event, but it was another to put them on the spot to question their relationship status. Even with all the books he read on the subject of romance and relationships, Sunburst remembered feeling like a student taking a test he never studied for during that awkward conversation with Cadance.
Well, why don’t you try asking somepony out? If you want, I can recommend a few guards who I know are single and gay. I mean… don’t you think it might be nice to get out there?
Sunburst’s muzzle wrinkled as he put down his book, not wanting to dwell too hard on the Princess’ well-intentioned offer that he turned down. Upon retrospect, the unicorn knew that the risk of rejection was fairly minimal, and his fears of experiencing homophobia were even less likely to occur in such a progressive city. But alas, while he knew that his inexperience with relationships was a large reason for his apprehensions, Sunburst had another reason for not wanting to accept Cadance's offer. Unfortunately, the unicorn didn’t need to admit what else he was inexperienced with, as he recalled the surprised look on the Alicorn’s face upon realizing how introverted he really was.
… Oh. You… You mean that you never…
Sunburst didn’t need to stay at that party to know what Cadance was going to ask; and even though he wasn’t too keen on answering when his embarrassment was so high at that moment, his abrupt exit should’ve been a clear-enough answer for the Princess to ascertain. So now, the pony was remaining in his little cocoon of serenity, alongside his books and his takeout while overcoming that awkward exchange. He may have known that Cadance was mature enough to not poke fun at him when he gets out of his funk, but that didn’t mean he was ready to leave very soon. Hopefully within another day or so, Sunburst would be comfortable enough to leave his house, and not dwell so badly on the Princess of Love discovering that he was a virgin.
“Pbbbtttt…” A peeved whinny escaped the pony’s white muzzle, and he used his magic to pick his book back up to continue reading. “I swear,” he muttered bitterly as he tried to go back to reading the romance series he had been binging. “Sometimes I wish there were escorts in the Crystal Empire or something. Upon saying that statement to himself, several knocks could be heard by the front door. Sunburst yelped as he jolted up from the couch like a petrified housecat, almost thinking for a split-second that somepony from outside just heard what he said. As he landed at the armrest of the couch with his fur sticking out a little, a second or two passed before he heard an unfamiliar male’s voice say through the door, “Uhhh… Sunburst? You got a package here! From… It’s from Princess Cadance, actually!”
That response caused Sunburst’s brows to raise rather high, not expecting to hear from the Princess in that sort of manner. She may have known about his preference of solitude, but the idea of her sending him a package was still a bit surprising. Nevertheless, the stallion’s curiosity overrode his apprehensions as he got off the couch to answer the door. His long orange mane may have been a bit disheveled, but he wasn’t too worried about his appearance as he opened the door and signed for the package; and much like the mail-pony who gave the unicorn his daily envelopes, the delivery stallion was barely given a second glance before Sunburst took the package and quickly slammed the door.
With a quick flash of his magic, Sunburst undid the tapes holding the top of the box together while placing it on the coffee table. After opening the top flaps, the unicorn saw that Cadance placed a letter on top of whatever occupied the rest of the box’s space. Instead of placing the letter aside, he sighed warily before picking the parchment up to read. He may have still felt reluctant following his last interaction with the Princess, but he figured whatever she had to say was important if it came with this mysterious package.
Dear Sunburst,
Before I say anything else, I want to sincerely apologize about the outcome of our conversation during that social. I never meant to embarass you, or to make you feel uncomfortable in any way. I understand how important your work is -- both in magic research and as the Empire’s Royal Crystaller -- and because of that, the last thing I would ever do is judge or impose on how you live your life.
With that being said, I do feel it’s important to point out something I noticed during our conversation. As you may already know, my magic allows me to sense various feelings within ponies around me, including love. However, I’m also able to detect other feelings if they’re evident enough from my senses. And when the two of us were talking, I was able to detect how you felt before you left the event.
Sunburst bit his lip with a fretful wince upon reading that second paragraph. Even though he was grateful that Cadance started this letter off with a proper apology, her mention of that added detail made him feel uncomfortable once more. He was aware of the Princess’ capabilities when it came to emotional detection magic, but he wasn’t too sure of how powerful her range may have been outside of love. Nevertheless, he figured that an Alicorn like Cadance could realize how he felt when she learned he was a virgin; among all the feelings he remembered assaulting his senses as he rushed out of that party, some of the most notable were things like regret and shame.
Regardless of how hollow he felt from that night, the unicorn was able to breathe out sharply before he continued reading Cadance's letter:

I may be the Princess of Love, but that doesn’t mean I judge ponies who prefer to be alone.
Sunburst groaned with a roll of his eyes, hating that Cadance was making assumptions like that in this “apology” letter. He knew she was just trying to be polite (and probably didn’t want to offend due to her political status), but the fact that she added that part irked him quite a bit. He then grew a frustrated scowl as he scanned the rest of the letter, hopeful that she wouldn’t write anything else that would be upsetting:
However, I’m fairly certain that with your case, you’re most likely not Asexual. I noticed the blush you were carrying while talking with a couple of ponies during that party, which was what prompted me to converse with you in the first place. I don’t mean to make assumptions, but I think it’s fairly clear that you want to make lasting bonds with others. However, I’m also sure that given your education and strenuous efforts to maintain your studies, that it may be difficult for you to try interacting with others without the need of published text.
That paragraph still irked him, but his expression was less scowled than before. Regardless of Cadance's previous writings, he couldn’t deny that she was right in that regard. Sunburst may have spent countless hours reading up on relationships and romance in private, but those books amounted to very little when it came to how he acted in public. It was easy to read about gaining confidence, but it was a whole different struggle when it came to avoiding standing in a puddle of sweat while chatting with some charming stud.
Because of that, I decided to give you an early birthday present. This gift serves two different purposes. The first is obviously an apology for what happened earlier. The second reason however, is that I consider this gift to be a means to try and help you with your confidence.

Beside the Princess’ signature was her distinct “Royal Stamp of Authenticity,” which was an imprint of her lips kissing the bottom of the page. Sunburst wanted to address the possible dangers of including remnants of her DNA in official and personal letters (especially after learning about Queen Chrysalis’ recent cloning attempts from Starlight Glimmer), but his mind was obviously focused on the subject of the letter itself. After blinking a couple times in befuddlement, the stallion put down Cadance's letter and glanced back at the black rubber ball. Part of him wanted to just put that thing back in the box, and mail it back without much thought; however, upon thinking over his Princess’ intentions, the pony sighed as he realized how rude that would be.
Sunburst wasn’t sure if it was due to his obligation to comply with Cadance's request, or his own curiosity regarding such an unknown product being in his home, but it wasn’t long before he lifted out the small instruction booklet from inside of the box. Upon reading through the directions, the unicorn’s brows raised when he realized just how simple the instructions were. Compared to Starlight’s attempts to teach him transmogrification or teleportation, this toy seemed much simpler in context. According to the steps, all he had to do was envision an item or being with his horn lit, and zap that image through his magic towards the ball.
Given that he wasn’t planning on doing anything too randy that night, Sunburst paused for a second as he tried to think of something to use as practice. After a moment, the pony shrugged before deciding to test the toy’s capabilities. The stallion closed his eyes for a moment with a hum, and slowly envisioned the details of a wine bottle. As soon as the image was thought out, Sunburst re-opened his eyes and lit his horn brightly; and with a zap of his magic against that ball, the rubber material instantly morphed before his eyes like it was its own entity.
Sunburst yelped in surprise at seeing the item activate so quickly due to his magic. However, his eyes widened when he saw the toy instantly take the shape of a wine bottle on top of the coffee table. He leaned in close with a marveled gape of his muzzle, needing to blink repeatedly at seeing the item posing as a perfect copy of a bottle. Aside from the pitch-black color, the product had the exact same weight, size, density, and even the glass texture as any of the glass bottles he had in his wine cellar.
After spending a minute or so holding the bottle with an impressed smirk, Sunburst giggled with a blush as he realized how useful that item could really be. “Wow, umm… I guess Cadance wasn’t kidding,” he muttered to himself. Of course, upon remembering what the toy’s purpose was for, his blush deepened before he looked around his empty home in paranoia. Upon confirming that all the doors and windows were locked, the unicorn placed the item on the floor instead of the table.
“Okay, uhhh… what to test next…” Sunburst felt a little embarrassed, mostly since he didn’t know how far its capabilities could go. With a wary blush, the stallion tried thinking of a more mature item to test next. He considered just conjuring up a Terrible Drake-brand dildo, but he quickly dismissed that as something too simple. Plus, after re-reading the instructions in the booklet, Sunburst knew that the toy had the ability to emulate living beings to some extent. “Ho… Holy crap,” he muttered with a shuddered exhale as he stared at the two “Guards” standing before him in his house. The two forms were completely silent, and remained stoic like a couple of ponyquins as they waited for Sunburst to speak. After taking a moment to calm himself down, the unicorn gulped and tried to ask timidly, “Uhhhh… Are… Are you two able to, uhhh… to understand me?”
Both of the pony-shaped forms nodded their heads in response, which made Sunburst tense up for a second in worry. Fortunately, he was able to remember from the instructions that the products are able to respond (at least non-verbally) when emulating living beings.
