Jake awoke and blinked the sleep from his eyes. What a weird dream I had. He yawned and stretched and then looked around the room. He was in a large room with polished stone floors. There were rugs scattered about the floor. The bed was huge with cream colored sheets and a golden sun embroidered on top. A large, dark, polished wooden door was on one side and on the other, a door made of blue and gold stained glass with a sun on it. Red curtains hung on either side of the second door. There was a desk in the corner and pieces of finely carved furniture spread throughout the room and a massive fireplace. Lanterns hung from the ceiling. Straight ahead was an archway that seemed to lead into another room. The whole place had a regal feel to it. What the?! Where am I? This isn’t my room. He then looked down and saw hooves where his hands should be. What happened to my hands?! Panic slipped into his mind as he tried to make sense of everything. He glanced into the mirror and it hit him. It wasn’t a dream was it? Jake rose out of bed and went over to the mirror.

The image that looked back at him was one he was still getting used to. A tall raven-haired alicorn with a silver mane and tail, blue eyes and a white star just below his horn. Just a day ago he had been a man of Earth out on a date, with a girl he died trying to protect from a robber. Ofcourse the girl was Princess Celestia of Equestria. She was in magical disguise the day of her visit to not draw attention to herself.

He then went to heaven to be reunited with his family who had died earlier in his life. Only to be given a choice to remain or return to Celestia, who was trying everything in her power to bring him back to life. Man, I really jumped into it this time. He didn’t regret his choice to return to her but the reality of that choice was now staring him in the face.

On Earth Jake had a good childhood, he came from a loving family and he even got to pursue his dreams of becoming a pilot. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to him except for Princess Celestia. He still remembered the first day they met. He was only 7 years old playing in his room, when he noticed his mirror was aglow. There she was, an image of beauty, the likes of which he had never seen before. She was his secret growing up. After all you don’t just run around saying you’re flirting with a white alicorn you talked to through the mirror in your room. He knew what he wanted to be and had become it. Yet it had all disappeared in an instant, taken by an idiot with a gun desperate for money. Still he had done it for love.

So the big question was now what? What was he going to do for a living? He had to relearn everything even down to writing and holding things. He looked down at his front hooves. I’m really going to be missing my hands. Here ponies used their hooves or magic. He really couldn’t use either. His first experience with magic was sneezing a gaping hole in the wall of Celestia’s chambers. He looked back up at his image and noticed the ring still around his horn. Celestia had called it a suppressor and it did exactly what the name implied. Then after the explosion, getting introduced to the royal guards as Prince Distant Star, childhood friend of the princesses. Celestia had taken him on a tour of the castle but everypony couldn’t help but to stare at him. The whispers about him buzzed as they walked about till finally he asked if they could just go back to the room. He didn’t like to lie to anyone, but what could he do? Alicorns were royalty in this world. A mysterious stallion, who can’t fly, use magic, no cutie mark and just shows up from parts unknown. Jake let out a long sigh at the thought. No, I will not give up. I promised that we were going to make this work, so it’s time to get started. Jake nodded at the image and put all doubts from his mind for the time being.

Celestia walked into the room. “Good morning. How did you sleep last night?”

“Really well, I was beat. I think it’s time to start my lessons on magic. I need to know how to open doors on my own and manipulate objects since I don’t have hands anymore.”

She seemed surprised by his straight forwardness. “You don’t have to be in a rush you know. Whenever you’re ready you can start. I figured you would want to take a couple of days before beginning, besides you still have your hooves.”

Jake face was a bit more serious, “You don’t understand. I am dependent on everypony to help me out. I can’t write or open doors. It’s almost like being a baby all over again. I don’t have any choice and it really can’t wait. My hooves aren’t any better. I’m used to having fingers and thumbs to grab stuff.”

“You’re not a baby but I can see your frustration in this, so we can start right here and now.”

“Here,” Jake said completely surprised. He hadn’t forgotten the hole he had put into her wall. Though they were quick to fix it, he was in no hurry to put a new one in. “I thought there was a training room we could work in. Some place that I couldn’t damage.”

“No, here will be fine. You might have power but you lack control. I can keep us safe but your first exercise is an easy one. First I need to take that ring off.” She levitated it off Jake’s horn and placed it on the table. “Now I want you to clear your mind and focus on the ring.”
Jake closed his eyes and took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. He then opened his eyes and focused on the ring. Celestia smiled. “Now I want you to pick it up in your mind. You want to pick it up.”

He looked at the ring and it began to glow. Then it lifted slowly from the table. “I DID IT,” Jake shouted with triumph. As he cheered, the ring dropped back to the table. “Wait, I didn’t want to drop it.”

“You have to focus. Because you lost your concentration, you dropped the object. This is your first lesson that you will be practicing today. I want you to pick up random objects and move them about. Baby unicorns do this all the time. It is simple for them because they want something, so they reach out with their magic and take it. Magic is based on two things; willpower and focus. These are the basics you need to understand before you start using magic. You’ll find it easy with some practice.”

“What if I sneeze again? Don’t you have work?” Jake thought he sounded like a child, but then again, he was about as helpless as one in his current state.

“It’s as I said before, I’ll keep us safe. As for my royal duties I can work from here today. Besides you need supervision until I think that you don’t need that ring anymore.” Celestia had a warm smile on her face as she walked over to Jake. “Besides, I like seeing you. When I woke this morning it took me a second to make sure you were real.” She nuzzled him gently.

Jake laughed at her words. “I felt the same this morning. I thought it was some crazy dream until I saw myself in the mirror. Well, enough talking, time to practice.” Suddenly there was a growling noise. “But first maybe some breakfast?”

Celestia had breakfast brought to her room for the both of them. Jake had the ring back on his horn for safety purposes. After swallowing down a blueberry muffin and drinking milk through a straw, he had a nagging question on his mind. “Tell me more about this ring. Why do you have such a thing in your room anyways?”

“It’s something from my childhood. You see I had an illness when I was just a filly. I lost control of my powers so my parents made me wear that ring to protect myself from, well, myself. It’s nothing to be concerned with. I got better but kept it just in case.”

Jake felt a little better knowing this was not an uncommon item he was wearing. “So did Luna ever have to wear one? Is this illness just found in children or can adults get it too?”

“No, Luna never had to wear one, and yes, the illness is mainly in children but some adults can get it too. The illness is called magical rampancy. They say once you get it you will never have it again. So if anypony sees you with that ring on, they will think you are just fighting the illness.”

“How long does this illness last?”

“A week and a half with medical help and several weeks without,” she said.

After breakfast Jake started practice. Celestia wanted to take the ring off his horn but Jake wanted to try using his hooves to do it himself. It was a little difficult but he finally managed and he placed it on the table. He then started to levitate the ring and putting it back down in different spots on the table. Then he turned his attention to bigger objects. First it was silverware then it was a plate. Soon he was moving a chair and then he tried the table. As the objects became larger, more concentration was required to move them. The table barely moved and it got the princess’s attention.

“Not that. It’s too big, too soon. You’re going to hurt yourself.”

“But the smaller objects I can move with ease. How big and heavy can we go?”

“It depends on the unicorn, but this is day one for you. I don’t want you to strain yourself.”
But Jake couldn’t be swayed. I want to learn more. How can I open doors, or how about picking up multiple objects at once.”

“Doors are like anything else. You just have to focus on the object. As for multiple objects you can try and move two of these small books. But I want to see you open and close doors first.”

Jake walked over to the door to Celestia’s chambers. He focused on it and it began to glow like all the other objects. Then it swung open. He gave her a quick glace as she smiled and nodded. He then looked back and slammed the door closed. “I don’t understand. I didn’t mean to slam the door.”

“Moving objects is one thing, finesse is another. You’ll learn how to handle things gently. That is why we are not playing with delicate objects right now.”

Jake then walked over to the two books she had set out for him to practice on. This time it was much more difficult. He could raise the one book with ease but the other took work. He finally managed to get both in the air about an hour later. He then spent the rest of the day practicing what he had learned. He tried to move things slowly and quickly. By the day’s end he was exhausted and his head hurt.

“You’ve made excellent progress today. For never having magic you’re catching on faster than I would have thought, I’m so proud. How do you feel?” Celestia had been watching him all day even though she seemed to be buried in paperwork.

“I’m beat and my head is pounding. I didn’t think moving stuff was going to take so much out of me.”

“Using magic is almost like working a muscle in the body. You have to build up your stamina and that is going to take some time. As for your headach, let me help you with that.” She leaned close to Jake and her horn began to glow. His head started to feel instantly better.

“I’m really going to have to learn whatever it is you just did.”

“Oh that was just a bit of healing magic but it’s far out of your reach right now.”

Jake smiled and kissed her. “Thank you Tia. You are giving me back my independence. I don’t want to be a burden on anypony.”

“You are anything but a burden. Remember who helped put you here. I’m responsible and I will make it right, I promise.” Celestia looked serious for the first time all day.

Jake held her. “Don’t feel guilty at all. We did this, and we will see it through together.”

She returned his embrace and the two just enjoyed the moment. In the following days Jake practiced the basics. By the end of the week Jake was able to handle things with care and move multiple books. He had gotten the hang of doors and even started to practice writing. His writing was somewhat legible, for a colt in the first grade. His head would still hurt but he always wanted to push himself. Celestia seemed a little tired too. She had been doing her normal duties as well as training Jake. However soon she would not have to be so involved. He was becoming more self-sufficient by the day. When he wasn’t performing magic, he read as much as he could. He wanted to know the history and all there was to learn about Equestria. Luna even checked in on the two of them.

Usually the sisters would have breakfast and dinner together, as a way to find out how the other’s day had gone. But since Celestia was busy watching and training Jake, Luna would come see them. She had told Jake she had a final exam for him. It would be to test his skills on his basic magic usage. He must also keep improving on his writing. Celestia started to protest not seeing a need for her younger sister’s involvement. Luna assured her and Jake it would not be too difficult and might even be fun. Once he could do this he would be ready for more difficult magical training.

It took Jake another week of practice before Celestia would let him attempt Luna’s exam. In the meantime he would go for runs on the castles grounds. This always seemed to help clear his head and he did them alone. He even tried on one day a slow jog while levitating a small rock. Celestia had not told him to do this, but he knew multitasking was important.

Finally the day came for the exam. Luna walked into Celestia’s room to get Jake. “Are you ready?” she asked.

“Bring it on. Also I have this for you.” He handed her a piece of parchment. She opened it and inside was a small journal he had written in every day since Luna had told him to improve on his writing.

“You’ve been practicing I see.”

“I have but it still takes forever to write. It looks better anyways.”

“Indeed it does. Now come with me to my room. Tia, you can come too.” Luna led the two to her room. “Go on in.”

The three walked in and what Jake saw blew him away. Luna’s room was furnished just like Celestia’s but with one major difference. In one corner was a TV and a gaming system. His mouth hung open and he stared at the technology in front of him. Luna smiled at Jake, “So what do you think?”

Jake looked like a kid at Christmas time. He had been a gamer on Earth--after all who wasn’t one--but to find this here was amazing. “What is this doing here? I didn’t know you guys had television and game systems. I never saw anything like that on the show. It just doesn’t seem to fit in with everything else. I mean the castle and the guards in armor and here in your room is modern tech.” He looked to Celestia, “Why didn’t you tell me you had these things? I told you about TV when I was on Earth, but you never said anything about having the same tech.”

“I was just listening, I’m sorry. We do have these things but…,” Celestia looked away, slightly embarrassed, “it slipped my mind during that conversation.”

“So you do know what that is. I was wondering if humans had such devices on Earth. Although you seem surprised that we have them. I’ll bet you don’t even know about Manehatten, a huge city to the north.” Luna seemed happy to know that Jake understood what video games were.

“Nope, can’t say that I knew about that. We had a city on Earth called New York and one part of that city was called Manhattan. So you do know about technology. I thought everything was powered by magic?”

“Most everything in our world is powered by magic, including our tech. So… time for the test.” Luna wanted to bring Jake back to the task at hand.

“So what is this test you have in mind?”

“You have been working on your basics and trying to multitask but now I need to see how good you have become. So your test will be to play a video game with me. It will be a first person shooter. Think you’re up for the task?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. This is your test? I hate to break it to you sweets but I was a gamer on Earth. We had first person shooters. Halo, Call of Duty, you name it. I was a fan of a system called the XBOX 360 myself. So what is the name of the game you had in mind?”

“I’m glad you’ve heard of these games because we have them here on Equestria too. I was thinking of Halo 4. Did you ever play that?” Luna had a smug look in her eye.

“One of my favorites, I still can’t believe you have all this here. All the way down to the same games. How is that possible?” Jake was looking over one of the controllers which looked like a 360 controller.

“I don’t know. How do Earthlings watch a show about our daily lives?”

“Good point. So are we on the same team or am I going to have to show you how we handled things on Earth?” Jake was already set to go. “I still don’t see how this has anything to do with what I’ve been working on these past two weeks.”
“Oh you don’t do you? Well, since you’re familiar with the game you should know that it’s multitasking. You can’t look at the controller because you’re watching the screen.”

“That’s not fair Luna. You know this is above his level. He is doing well but this might be too much,” Celestia protested.

“No. I want to try. I loved gaming back on Earth. Now I can have that back. I never even got to finish this game so this’ll be fun.”

“Alright, I think we should start you off against me. This way you can get a feel for the controls and I can hold back and not frag your butt right away, unlike the computer.” Luna powered up the game and took another controller. Celestia took a seat near Jake and looked on. Jake focused on his controller as his magic picked it up. He found manipulating the controls to be easy as long as he looked at it. Then the game began. With all his practice this was different. He had to focus on the game but also on the controller too. His game charcter movements were slow and awkward. Luna would tease him by running past him and firing a burst in his direction. “What’s wrong? I thought you had played this game before?”

Jake glared sideways at her. “If I had my hands you’d be toast.”

Luna just laughed as she killed his character off for the first time. “I think my sister was right. This is a little much for you. Perhaps you could come back and try again later.”

Jake was getting frustrated. He knew he could do this but at this rate Luna was going be beat him hands down. Wait a minute, hands down. Jake looked down at his controller. He had been levitating it as if he were holding it with his hands. The controller was down like if he were playing on Earth. I wonder if this would help? He floated the controller almost to eye level. That is when things got easier. Now he was able to see both the controller and the TV, and his character moved with more efficiency. This time when Luna ran by, Jake cut her down. “Beginner’s luck, noob,” Luna chided

Jake smiled. “We’ll see.”

Luna started to get more aggressive. She managed to kill him a few more times but he was getting better. He could tell she had to work harder. He fragged her with a grenade the next time. The time after that he snuck up behind her and finished her off with a melee attack. By the end of the game Luna had won but not by much. “So how about a rematch, what do ya say?”

Luna looked at him with a smile on her face. “I’m impressed. You did better than I expected. My sister hardly ever plays with me.”

Jake turned and looked at Celestia. “What? I never understood those games. It’s really not my thing,” she said.

“Jake, I think this is start of a beautiful friendship,” Luna said.

“Sure thing, right after I school a mouthy little filly.”

Luna had that smug look on her face again. “You want the title? Just try and take it, noob.”

The two played for hours. At the end they were almost tied. Luna looked a little tired. She glanced over at Jake. “I think you passed the test. What do you think Tia?”

Celestia yawned. “I think he did too. So that means you don’t have to wear that suppressor anymore if you don’t want too.” She had left after a short time to attend to other duties. She had been checking up on the two of them every so often to see how Jake was doing.

“Awesome. So what time is it anyways?”
“I believe its dinner time. Why don’t you go take care of the sun, Tia, and Jake and I will meet you in the dining hall.”

“Alright,” she said as she got up and stretched. With one more yawn she left the room.

They met in the dining hall and had dinner. Afterwards a small cake was brought in and set in front of Jake. On it read, Congratulations.

Celestia said, “We wanted to celebrate your achievement in your first stage of training.”

“Thanks guys, the cake is awesome. Tia, I would have never gotten this far without your help.”

Celestia smiled, “Your welcome Jake. You’ve taken you’re first step into a bigger world.”

“I’m just glad to be more independent now. Glad to have video games back but more importantly, I have more control of my magic.” Jake was speaking but he seemed like he was far away. The sisters embraced him and he returned their embrace. There was still a long way to go for him but he was starting to feel whole once again.

Returning to the Sky

Jake awoke early one morning at the sound of the wind outside. It had only been a couple of days since his exam with Luna, and Celestia was still sleeping peacefully beside him. He got out of bed trying not to wake her and went to the balcony. The moon was gorgeous and stars shone brightly. The horizon was getting lighter in anticipation of the sunrise and a cool wind blew. Jake looked to the sky. He closed his eyes and spread his wings as the wind ran over him. He imaged what it would feel like to fly again, to soar above the clouds, and look down at the earth below. Jake had known the freedom of flight as only any human could but this was going to be different. There would be no airplane this time, just him and the wind in his face. At the thought, he stretched his wings to their full extension as if he were already flying.

He was so lost in his thoughts of flight; he didn’t hear Celestia walk up from behind. “It’s a beautiful early morning; Luna has out done herself again.” She looked into the sky admiring her sister’s work. “You’re usually not up this early. What’s on your mind?”

Jake opened his eyes and folded his wings. “Sorry, couldn’t sleep. I heard the wind and had to come out here. Of everything I left back on Earth, I miss flying the most. It was what I did and I need to get back in the air soon, or I’m gonna go nuts.”

A warm smile spread across Celestia’s face. “Then the next lessons will be flying. I was starting to wonder when you were going to ask about that. It was a big part of your life back on Earth. I still remember you taking me up in an airplane.”

He smiled at the memory. “It was a lot of fun.”

“Um hum,” Celestia nodded in agreement. “Give me just a minute I have to raise the sun.” Her horn began to glow golden and a point of light illuminated the tip. Then the sun blazed forth over the horizon.”

“Amazing, I mean wow,” Jake marveled. “Is that difficult at all for you?”

“Not at all, it’s just a spell. Unicorns used to do this all the time. However, it did take many unicorns to do what I just did.”

For the first time it hit Jake how powerful Celestia really was. He knew it was her job to raise the sun but to see her do it was another matter entirely. “I wonder if I’ll ever be that good?”
“With practice yes. You have great power but all things come with time.”

“Yeah, practice, a lot of practice and a few miracles thrown in for good measure.” Jake was staring at the sun and back to his now blushing love.

“Well if you want to fly you aren’t going to get very far on an empty stomach. Let’s grab some quick breakfast from the kitchen and then go out to the courtyard.”

“Ok but first,” Jake walked up and kissed her. “Good morning. Now we can start the day.”

She returned the kiss and the two trotted down to the kitchen where the staff were already at work preparing breakfast for the castle. The kitchen was enormous. Massive ovens lined one wall alone. In another corner were stoves and in another corner sinks. There pots and pans and dishes of all kinds hanging from the ceiling or in massive cupboards. There were tables in the center of the room with ponies mixing or rolling dough. It was controlled chaos. At the sight of Celestia and Jake they all stopped and bowed. “Good morning your highness, how may we serve you today?”

“I would just like a couple of muffins to go please and some water as well.” Celestia said to one of the cooks. Immediately some muffins and two thermoses of water were produced and put into saddle bags. One of the servants went to put the saddle bags on when Jake interrupted them.

“Don’t worry I will take that.”

“As you wish, your majesty.” She smiled and set the bags on Jake’s back. Jake winced internally at the servant’s response. He knew what he was supposed to be but that didn’t mean he had to like it. He was used to doing things on his own and being waited on all the time was getting annoying. The two alicorns thanked the staff and continued to the courtyard. After eating and enjoying the beautiful morning, it was time to begin.
“Now I know you have been running almost every day, which is good. You will need your stamina for flying. So let’s try you flapping your wings and kicking off the ground.”

“Oh, you mean hovering like a chopper, got it.” Jake took a few steps back and looked at the tops of the trees.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m finding out where my head wind is. It is always easier to take off and land with a head wind verses a tail wind.”

“Jake, don’t try anything more than just hovering.”

Jake smiled and held up a hoof. “I promise, scouts honor.”

“I didn’t know you were in the scouts.”

Jake winked at Celestia. “I wasn’t.” With that he spread his wings and began to pump them as he kicked off the ground hard. At first it was difficult to get stable. He would move around and couldn’t control his altitude. Jake landed to catch his breath. “This is a little harder than I thought.”

“It’s about timing and developing the feel for your body,” Celestia replied. “Try again. This is the most important basic skill of all pegasi.”

Jake took his position. This time he jumped first then started to flap his wings. In his mind he counted to keep a beat one, two, one, two. He would have one down stroke, which pushed his body up and then as he felt himself descend, he would come back with a second down stroke. This time he did much better in staying in the air. It almost felt like running, having to keep breathing and a steady rhythm.

“That’s it, you’re doing it, YOU’RE DOING IT! Keep it up!” Celestia cheered from the ground.

Since he had never used his wings before it wasn’t long before he started to feel the burning sensation from his back. He set back down as gently as he could. “Wow.” He was catching his breath again. “See, huh, no problem.”

“You did great! Did you know how to hover back on Earth?”

“No, I was a fixed wing pilot. Airplanes can’t hover normally.” Jake said wiping the sweat from his brow. He grabbed his thermos and took a big gulp of water.

“I kinda figured flying would come easier to you than magic. You had past experience in this area after all. Why don’t you stretch your wings a bit and practice some more.”

Jake was already way ahead of her. He was stretching out and going to his practice position again. The courtyard was huge…plenty of room for him to take-off. Celestia saw a look in his eye she didn’t like. “Now I think you just need to work on hovering before we move on to-“

Jake reared up on his hind legs and took off like a shot before Celestia could finish her sentence. He pumped his wings hard and kicked off from the ground. He was instantly in the air and gaining altitude. He had no intensions of taking flying slow. Magic he may not get but this was all too familiar to him.

Celestia called after him, “Jake where are you going?”

“Just up to traffic pattern altitude,” was the response she got.

“What is traffic pattern altitude?” Celestia called out.

“It’s just 1000ft up, it’ll be alright.” Once he reached the altitude he just glided on the wind. “This is great! Ha, ha!” He banked as he made a box pattern around the courtyard. The castle grounds looked great from the air. Jake could see statues in one part, a small lake in another area, and a hedge maze in another. If there was a heaven on Equestria, Jake had just discovered it. Suddenly Jake realized he wasn’t alone in the sky anymore. Celestia had decided to join him in his traffic pattern.

“Well, you certainly took to this rather quickly.”

“I am a pilot after all. Now I’m going to bring it in. Let’s see if I can grease this one on the first try.”

“Grease what? I don’t understand. Listen please be careful on landing. They not only are mandatory but can be dangerous.”

“Do you remember who you’re talking to? I’ve got this. Besides, sometime you have to run before you can walk.” Jake had confidence written all over his face. He didn’t need Celestia to tell him the old pilot saying, takeoffs are optional but landing are mandatory. He started his mental checklist for landing. Flaps, don’t have any. Airspeed, slowing down. Jake slowly pitched up to slow his forward glide. He felt himself losing altitude. As he turned in for his final approach he was looking good. Alrighty Jake, easy does it. You’ve got this made, no prob. He descended down to the ground. When he was close enough he lowered his legs and the ground came up fast. He found himself running, and all was looking good until he hit a rut in the ground. Jake found himself tumbling head over hooves to come to a complete stop on his back.

Celestia dove and landed with speed and grace right next to him. “Jake! Are you alright?” She looked scared.

Jake looked up at her dazed and started to laugh. “That was awesome! If I didn’t trip that would have been perfect, ha ha.” He rolled over and got up slowly, a little shaky from his crash. He checked to make sure he was alright as Celestia did the same. Other than some bumps and scraps he was fine.

“Why don’t we call it a day? You don’t want to strain your body. I also want to check your wings out.” She still had a worried look on her face.

He leaned over and kissed her. “I’m fine, really. You don’t have to fuss over me so much.”

“You could have broken your neck and you scared the life out of me.” She was almost glaring at Jake.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. As for hurting myself, well, that could happen at anytime. I can’t begin to tell you how good it felt to be in the air again. I’m a guy and we don’t think about too many things all the time. For me flying has been one of them. To have that back or at least roughly so, is liberating.”

“What else do stallions think about all the time?” Celestia said as her expression softened and a smirk crossed her face.

“I don’t wanna tell you.”

Celestia took on a mock shocked look. “I’m the ruler of Equestia and goddess of the day. I command you to tell me.”

“Make me.”

“Wait a minute. You almost kill yourself and I was mad at you. Now you’re here flirting with me and I’m not mad…stop that.”

“Stop what?” Jake said with a fake look of innocence. “I’m not doing anything.”

Celestia pushed him away with a hoof. “No, I’m mad at you for being reckless. I’m going to leave before you try to kill yourself again.”

“Not if I don’t let you leave.” Jake jumped at her.

“EEK,” Celestia took off running and the two chased each other around the courtyard like a couple of love struck ponies. Jake almost had her when there was a sharp pain that shot through his right leg.

“AH! Ok, that’s not good.” He came to a complete stop as he lifted his right leg carefully.

“So you really did hurt yourself. Come on, let’s get back to the room so I can fix you up.”

Jake hobbled back to the room where Celestia tended to his sprained leg. She then preened Jake’s wings, which turned out to be very relaxing for him.

“I’m sorry for scaring you today. I didn’t mean to.”

“It’s alright. I’m sorry for sounding like a nag towards you. I don’t want to see you hurt but I forget you must be going crazy here all the time. I know you want more out of life…”

“I do want more but I had a blast today. Today was the first time we had fun together instead of you teaching me. It’s been too long. I’ve missed your laugh.”

She leaned forward and nuzzled him. “I just want you to feel whole again.”

“I’m getting there, thanks in no small part to your help. There is however something that has been on my mind. I’m worried about your royal image.”

Celestia wasn’t sure where Jake was going with this. “I don’t understand?”

“Well, I’ve been staying here with you in your room for over 2 weeks. Aren’t you worried what ponies might think or say? It’s not like you’re just some mare. You’re the princess and one of their gods. I guess where I’m going with this is I don’t want to cause you any trouble. Maybe I should get my own room?”

She gave Jake a calm look. “First of all, these are my chambers. I will keep whomever I want here. Second, ponies will always talk, there is no escaping that. Third, you will be getting your own room for the next phase of your training, but this will always be your room.”

“I don’t quite follow.”

“Don’t worry. You’ll see soon enough. These are just the basics but I will send you to others for more advanced training. When you’re done there, you will come back. For now just work on your landings a bit more.”

“Come on, like you could keep me out of the air.”

“No, I seriously doubt anypony could,” she said with a smile.

The next few days Jake was forced to take it easy. He worked on basic magic and reading. He tried to explore the castle but the aching in his leg limited to what he could do. Where ever he went in the castle he could still hear the servants whispering about him. He decided instead of letting it bother him to have fun with it. Most people try to draw their own conclusions and no one really knew him so it was funny. Some of the servants were wondering when he was going to leave. Others thought he was secretly courting the princess. Some wished he would court them. No pony seemed to have a problem with him though.

Finally his leg was better and he was back to flying. The injury hadn’t been so bad. It gave the muscle in his back time to recover. It turned out he had been pretty sore and once again pushed himself a little harder than planned. Flying came really fast for him. It was an escape from the castle. His landings improved, especially when Celestia taught him how to hover and then fly forward and back again. No more long take-offs and landings for him.

The next day Celestia ordered some small fluffy clouds put into the sky above the castle. “Today Jake, we are going to cloud walk.”

“I don’t understand. How can you guys fly through clouds one minute and sit on them the next?”

“Like most everything else, magic. The pegasi have this ability. They choose when the cloud is solid or just water vapor. Just like the unicorns can pick objects up with their magic if they want to. Follow me to the first cloud and you will see.”

Jake did as she asked, and watched as she set down on the cloud as if it were solid earth. “See, it’s easy. Now you try it. Just remember that you want the cloud solid.”

I want the cloud solid, was all that was running through his mind as he plopped down on the cloud. “I did it! This is amazing.” The cloud felt soft to walk on yet firm at the sametime. He could see for miles in every direction. “It’s like a rest stop in the sky. So if I think it isn’t solid then it—aaaaahhhhh!”

“JAKE!”, Celestia called after him as he fell through the cloud he was standing on.

Jake came hovering back up through the cloud. “I’m ok. I just have to keep my focus. Do pegasi have problems with this in the beginning?”

“No, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen it happen. Just remember the cloud is solid.”

“Right, the cloud is solid, got it,” he said as he landed once again on the cloud.

After a few hours of flight training and walking on clouds, it was time to call it a day. Jake couldn’t help but notice that once again Celestia looked more worn out than usual.

“Are you ok? You look more tired than you should be.”

“I don’t know. Maybe I’m not sleeping well.”

Celestia lowered the sun and the two joined Luna for dinner. Luna looked a little tired herself but that was to be expected since this was her morning. Luna asked about the day and got a big laugh about Jake falling through the cloud. Then she was off for her nightly patrol and Celestia and Jake retired to the room. She had taught him how to preen his own feathers but he decided to preen hers that night. As he worked on her wings she started to write a letter.

“Who are you writing to? Is it Twilight?”

“As a matter of fact it is. I’m giving her another assignment. This is part of her training and she always loves a new challenge.”

“So what is she going to have to do this time?” Jake asked as he moved from one wing to the other.

“She is going to be your new magic instructor.”

Jake stopped what he was doing. “So it’s time to move on already? Am I really doing that well?”

“Yes you are in fact. I will arrange for accommodations in Ponyville. You will do well under Twilight. She is the best student I’ve had, not to mention she is an element bearer.

Jake couldn’t believe it. He was actually going to meet Twilight Sparkle, which meant he was going be meeting the rest of the gang as well. There was another plus side: no more being waiting on and the privacy of his own place. Now if he could just bring Celestia with him it would be perfect. At that last thought his face became a little less bright. “When would I get to see you?”

Celestia smiled, “Don’t worry, it isn’t that far away. You didn’t think I would send you off and not come and see you. I have to attend to royal business and Twilight can give you more attention as a teacher than I can. Although I will warn you, she is tough. She takes education very seriously.”

“Don’t worry, I remember from the show. You had to send her to Ponyville just so she could make some friends.”

“Yes, she was quite the bookworm. I say that in a loving manner of course. We will meet her tomorrow. In the meantime, could you please finish my other wing? You really are good at preening.” She smiled and with those eyes of hers, how could Jake say no?

Settling In

The next day Jake and Celestia took her flying carriage to Ponyville. Celestia wanted to see him off personally and it was a great excuse to get away from the castle for a bit. When they arrived, Twilight and Spike were there to greet them.

"Good morning Twilight, Spike. How are you both on this beautiful day?"

"We are well, your Highness. Thank you for asking. How was your trip?" chimed Twilight.

"It was pleasant. I would like to introduce you to your new student, for awhile at least. This is Prince Distant Star."
Jake stepped forward as Twilight and Spike bowed before him.

"I've heard much about you both. But please, I'm your student. You don't need to stand on ceremony with me."

Twilight raised her head, "As you wish, your Highness."

"Please don't be so formal. You may call me Star if you like."

Twilight smiled at hearing this. Jake could tell by her body language that she was starting to relax now. Spike seemed to be following her lead so this was going to work after all.

"Why don't we all go inside the house? I would like to see where Star will be staying. Also maybe a cup of tea?" Celestia asked.

"Of course, your Highness. This way. Everything has been prepared. I'm sorry the others couldn't make it but they were busy. However I think...well, I know Pinkie will be throwing a house warming party later if you would like to stay?"

"I only wish I could Twilight, but there are things that require my attention back in Canterlot. I'm afraid tea and a quick tour is all I have time for today."

Twilight seemed down at hearing this. However the Princess was always very busy so just getting to see her for this amount of time was good enough.

The four of them stepped into the small house. Directly in front of them was a staircase. To the left was the living room furnished with a couch and a couple of chairs. There was a small coffee table in front of the couch with a throw rug under it. Small end tables were by the chairs with a few lamps in the corners and a clock on the wall. There was a large window that looked out into the front of the house with neutral color drapes on either side. In fact the whole room was a neutral color. Twilight led the tour while Spike headed for the kitchen to start boiling the water for the tea.

"Here is the living room for if you have guests over or just for relaxing. If you don't like the arrangment or the color we can have that changed later. Rarity has offered to come by and help you. She's full of creative ideas and very generous so if you're interested just let me know."

Jake just smiled and nodded as Celestia looked around approvingly and Twilight continued the tour.

"Next we have the downstairs bathroom and hall closet. Then there is the kitchen." The kitchen was small and simple with a round wooden table in the corner. Again the color was a basic neutral. There were two windows, one over the sink and the other by the table giving a view of the woods behind the house. Jake didn't care about the color or that the house was a simple little place. As far as he was concerned it was perfect. He had never needed or cared about high fashion. The house was functional and that's what mattered most to him. They continued the tour upstairs. It seemed to be just one giant room.

"This is the only bedroom in the house. It also serves as an office. The bathroom is just around the corner over by the wall just past the closet. We had a dresser put in and the windows let in plenty of light in the room. I had a desk put in with a bookshelves. I also had your supplies of parchment, ink and quills put in this foot locker at the end of your bed. So you are all ready to start with lessons after you get settled in."

Jake was impressed. The bathroom had towels and soaps. The bed already was made with clean linen. The house was ready to be moved into.

"So if there's anything you might need, anything at all, we will get it for you."

"Who is we?" Jake asked with rising curiosity.

"Why us, all of Ponyville. We want you to feel welcome here."

Jake was starting to feel a little overwhelmed. He managed to not let it show on his face.

"Thank you. I appreciate everything you've done. It's amazing and I'm looking forward to getting started with the lessons."

Twilight's face lit up. "Don't worry, we will start tomorrow. Today just relax and walk around. Everyone here is very friendly."

Jake smiled and the three of them headed down stairs to the living room where Spike had the tea waiting for them. Celestia and Jake sat on the couch and Twilight and Spike took the chairs. The tea was really good. Jake had never really been a fan of tea but this was divine. It had a faint sweetness to it and smelled of peppermint. "This tea is wonderful. Where did you get it?"

"Oh this. I got it from Sugarcube Corner. It's a bakery here in town. The best place to buy sweets."

"I have a question, if you don't mind answering," Spike asked.

"Go right ahead and ask away."

"Ok, what happened to your cutie mark?"

The question caught Jake completely off guard. Now the reality was hitting him right between the eyes. He didn't have a background story. He couldn't tell them the truth. All adults had their cutie mark but since he had been created, he didn't have one. There was no telling when, or even if, it would appear. Before, he was able to hide in the castle, but this was going to be different. There would be a ton of questions. Twilight, being as smart as she was, would be able to tell if Jake starting making things up. What was he going to do? Before he could answer, Celestia came to his rescue.

"He doen't have one, Spike. In fact that is why he is here. He is having to relearn magic and flight. He comes from a far away place that no pony knows of, save only a handful."

"Wow! So when you get done will you go back? Where is this place?"

Before Jake could answer Celestia just kept filling in the blanks. "He came here by magical means and he can't return home. Canterlot is his home now. He has been my dear friend for a long time but I need Twilight to help him with his magical studies. I will finish his training, but for now I am busy, so that is why he is here. As for his lack of knowledge, that was due to his coming here. He lost these things on the journey so we are going to help him."

"I'm so sorry to hear that. It must be terrible for you to go through this." Spike and Twilight were both the picture of concern.

"Thank you for your concern, Spike", Jake said. "I have friends, my health and I'm learning just fine. It will all come back in time. I'm looking forward to making new friends and learning from Twilight herself. That is truly an honor."

Twilight started to blush hard. "I'm just a regular old unicorn. I work hard as the Princess's student but I'm not that great."

"You're being too modest. The Princess speaks very highly of you. Also you are an element bearer."

"It's true, Twilight", Celestia said. "You are my prized student. If I had any doubt he would not be here. You are the right unicorn for the job."

"Thank you. I won't let you either of you down. I'm sorry for what happened to you. I'm not sure how it happened but we'll have you back to normal in no time."

The four of them finished their tea. Before long, it was time for Celestia to leave. As they walked back to the carriage Twilight bowed.

"It was so good to see you again, princess. If you'll excuse me I have an experiment I'm working on. Star, it was good to meet you and if you need anything I'm in the library. Come on Spike", and the two left.

Jake looked back at Celestia. He was already starting to miss her and she wasn't even gone yet. He could tell by the look in her eyes that the feeling was mutual. She leaned in and they nuzzled one another. She whispered in his ear, "I left a bag of bits in the house so you can buy things. If you need more just ask."

Jake looked her with a grin, "Thanks Mom, for the lunch money. I promise not to spend it all on junk food".

Celestia just rolled her eyes and gave him a quick kiss. Then she was off back to Canterlot. Jake watched her fly away and noticed her turn to catch a final glimse of him.

He walked back inside the house and found the bag of bits on the kitchen table. He then went to the hall closet and found saddle bags hanging inside. This will be helpful. I need some pockets since we aren't wearing clothes. Jake gathered the bags and went out the door intending to explore the town. His little place was located on the outskirts, which was nice since it meant quiet for him to study. It also meant space for him to practice magic. As he walked through the town he noticed that he was drawing a lot of attention. It's alright Jake. Knew this was going to happen. You are new, an alicore and have no cutie mark.

But the difference between the castle and here in Ponyville was that ponies were saying "Hi", as they passed. Everyone seemed so nice and welcoming. He spend the whole day wandering all around town. He stepped into every shop and even followed a path to the beginnings of a forest. He noticed a sign on the side of the road, Danger, Everfree Forest, Travelers Beware! He decided that going into the forest would be a bad idea right now. By the time he made it back to his little home his stomach was starting to complain. Shoot, I didn't check to see if I had any food at the house. He was lost in thought as he stepped into the house.

Suddenly the lights burst on with shouts of "SURPRISE", and a pink figure came sailing through the air at him. Jake having forgotten all about the house warming party, screamed in surprise. A blinding flash occured and with a *SNAP*, he was back outside. "Wha, what just happened?" Jake looked around, trying to get his bearings.

Twilight and the others came running outside to find a wide-eyed Jake just standing there.

"Are you ok?" Twilight asked.

"What just happened to me? One minute I'm inside, then I get startled and now I'm outside."

Twilight smiled, "You're ok, you're ok. You teleported. I guess Pinkie suprised you and well, you just reacted. You're fine."

"My head feels funny."

"That's normal. I felt the same disorientation the first time I teleported. Trust me, it goes away with time".

A pink mare approached, a little more slowly this time. "Hi, my name is Pinkie Pie and this party is for you, welcome to Ponyville. I didn't mean to scare you."

"Oh, it's alright", Jake smiled back at Pinkie. "You sure got me alright! I'm sorry, I don't know if I have anything to offer in the way of food but--"

A orange mare with western hat stepped forward next. "Now don't ya be worryin' 'bout that. We brought enough food to feed an army. By the way, name's Applejack and it's mighty nice to meet ya". She tipped her hat to Jake and the next mare stepped forth.

"I am Rarity and by the look of your house you are in desperate need of my help".

Jake looked at the others with confusion. "Huh, I don't understand."

"Your place, darling. The colors are...well there aren't any. This simply will not do for one of your status. If I had but known I would have corrected it before you arrived. Have no fear, I have some ideas I'm sure you're going to love."

Jake didn't feel like fighting her on the issue, even though he thought his home was fine the way is was. "Um, thank you. I'll be happy to take a look at what you have."

Rainbow Dash was next on the introductions as she landed right in front of him. "The name's Rainbow Dash and flying is what I do! Twilight tells me you're here to relearn magic and flight. Well look no further. With my help you'll go from average to awesome in no time in the flight department."

Jake noticed that there was another pegusi hiding behind Rainbow. She was golden in color with a pink mane and tail. Right away Jake knew it was Fluttershy. He walked around Rainbow so as to introduce himself. "Hello, you must be Fluttershy."

At the mention of her name she looked up. "H-How do you know my name?" she asked in almost a whisper.

"I know who all of you are. Celestia told me. You have a gift for speaking with the animals. I find that most fasinating. Perhaps I could come by sometime and see your animals?"

She seemed surprised by this but at the mention of animals and Jake's interest in them she perked up. "That would be wonderful. If you would like a pet, I have all kinds."

"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. For now why don't we go back inside? Wouldn't want that food to get cold."

"PARTY TIME!!!! LET'S DO IT!! WHOO HOO!" Pinkie jumped in the air and led the way bouncing back into Jake's house.
The party ran late into the evening with a good time had by all. Celestia's cover story was holding. Although Jake didn't like to lie to anyone, he didn't want to come out just yet with who he really was. But then again who he had been was dead and this was his new reality now.

Most of the town including the mane six had showed up for the party. Afterwards his new friends and neighbors helped him clean up the place. When the last guest had left he went to up to his bedroom. He sat at his desk and wrote to Celestia about all that had happened. Then, after making the mental note to have Spike send it in the morning, he went to sleep.

Trouble with Teleportation and Bullies

View Online

The next couple of weeks were full of study and lectures and homework. Jake couldn’t remember the last time he studied this hard. The mornings were spent reviewing the homework from the night before, followed by the daily lecture. After lunch he practiced the spells he was learning. Some spells he got right away, like the growing spell (which could be used to grow plants or just facial hair on a certain dragon), repair spell (for all the damage he might cause). Twilight had mentioned that magic would come easier for him because he was an alicorn but he was nowhere near ready for some of the advanced spells. He kept in touch with Celestia through letters. On Jake’s request she didn’t visit often since he needed to study hard to get his magic down.

One spell in particular Jake always seemed to have problems with was the teleportation spell. He went to places he wasn’t aiming for. He remembered what Twilight said to him on the first day of attempting this spell. Teleportation requires a lot of concentration. You are picturing where you want to go and focusing your magic in on yourself. The first couple of times will leave you slightly disorientated but that’s normal. The more you do it, the easier it get’s, I promise.

Famous last word, he thought. He missed his target everytime. The first time he was supposed to go from one side of the room to the other, instead he went across town. Apple Jack was there trying to fix a busted wheel on her apple cart. He remembered feeling hungry before casting the spell. For his assistance in the repairs he got an apple. The second attempt he thought about flying before casting the spell and it put him on the roof. Twilight theorized he was getting it right. He just needed to focus on the target. His magic was taking him where he really wanted to go. I’m going to get this right, so that I can help others. He thought.

“Are you ready this time, Star?” Twilight asked.

“Ready, Twilight.” Jake took a deep breath and focused on the target just across the room. There was a blinding flash, a *Snap* and he was gone. The next thing he knew he was in the woods. “Great! I’m never gonna get this down.” He had no idea where he was. So he picked a direction and started walking. He came across a clearing soon, which was a relief. At least I’m not that deep in the woods. As he approached the clearing he started hearing voices. The closer he got the more of the conversation he could make out. It sounded like chanting…”blank flanks, blank flanks.”

Jake was familiar with that term. Three fillies in particular from the show were teased all the time about having no cutie marks. He looked back at his own bare flank. Oh, I’m putting a stop to this right now. As he got closer to the clearing he realized it wasn’t a clearing at all but the edge of the school yard. He could see Diamond Tiara and her sidekick Silver Spoon, along with a few other kids, surrounding the Cutie mark crusaders.

“I can’t believe you guys are, like, trying to recruit new members into your stupid club.” Diamond Tiara mocked.

“It’s not stupid! Your bullying of those who don’t have their cutie mark yet just proves us right. Fillies and colts need to know there is a safe place they can go without ponies like you to harass them,” Scootaloo protested.

What kind of losers would be caught dead hanging with you guys? You three think you’re sooo special but you’re not. Only special ponies get their cutie marks first. You guys are more like special ed.

Jake smiled to himself. For the first time since he became an alicorn he was really going to enjoy his status as royalty. He emerged from the trees just behind the crusaders. “Excuse me. There is nothing wrong with these fine fillies.” The kids turned in surprise at Jake’s appearance.

“Who are you suppose to be anyways?” Diamond Tiara said in a harsh tone.

Jake spread his wings-and his horn glowed bright. “My name is Prince Distant Star and I’m used to being addressed in a more respectful manner.” The children all bowed quickly and kept their heads down.

“I..I’m sorry your highness. I didn’t know,” Diamond Tiara stammered.

“Would someone like to explain to me what is going on here?” Jake asked with regal authority. No one spoke so Jake decided to take the lead. “It sounded like you were bullying these three because they have no cutie mark.”

“We were only having fun. We didn’t mean it,” Silver Spoon said weakly.
“I don’t think the Crusaders would agree with you.”
Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom looked up for the first time. Jake had folded his wings and his horn had stopped glowing. “Yes, it’s true your highness. We are picked on because we don’t have our cutie marks yet,” Replied Sweetie Belle.

Jake turned to one side exposing his own bare flank. There was a collective gasp from the children. “Your flank! You don’t have a cutie mark!” Apple Bloom said.

“No, I don’t. I am not defined by a mark and neither are any of you. Yes, it is a sign of your special talent but your actions define you as a pony. These three have taken a noble stand against those who mock and shame others who have not discovered themselves yet. They wish to help others while they discover who they are. Without knowing their special talent I can say these are great fillies. It takes real courage to do what they’ve done. I myself do not yet know what my special talent is. I lost much so that is why I’m here, to relearn. Where I come from the penalty for bullying can be quite high. You would do well to remember this the next time you decide to have fun at someone else’s expense.”

The children all nodded, “Yes, your highness.”

“Now if you would excuse us. I would like to speak with the Crusaders alone please.”

The children dispersed leaving only a very shocked and confused bunch of Crusaders behind. As the fillies and colts leave the whispers can be heard among them, “How does he know about them?”

Once the rest were gone Jake turned to the three girls. “Are you three alright?”

Scootaloo is the first to find her voice. “How do you know about us, your highness?”

“Please, call me Star. The formal title was just to help make my point with the group. I figured Diamond Tiara would respond better to that.”
“Yeah she did. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her stutter before,” Apple Bloom said with a huge grin.
“You really think we’re brave and noble?” Sweetie Belle asked.

“I meant every word. I’ve known of you three for awhile. Things like you helping others is exactly what Celestia is trying to achieve here in her kingdom,” Jake said with a smile.

“How do ya know about us?” Apple Bloom was shocked beyond measure that royalty had been keeping track of her and her friends.

“Princess Celestia and Luna have told me much of you. I was hoping to finally meet all of you. I didn’t see you at my house warming party thrown by Pinkie a couple of weeks ago.”

“Oh, we were camping at Zecora’s house. We were trying to get our cutie marks in potion making.” Sweetie Belle said.

“I thought we were going for our cutie marks in Everfree forest exploration?” Scootaloo asked.

“Ah who cares, it didn’t work, again.” Apple Bloom said as she looked down and kicked at the ground in front of her. “Sometimes it feels like we are never gonna get our cutie marks.”

“Apple Bloom, would your sister give up? What about your older brother or grandmother?”

“Well, no they wouldn’t, but every pony says just to be patient or it will come in its own time. But if we had our cutie marks we wouldn’t be harassed all the time,” Apple Bloom said and the three started to avert their eyes.

“Well before you start to get yourselves down think on this. What if you were not meant to get your cutie marks yet?”

“What do you mean?” Apple Bloom asked.
“What if you three are here to inspire other little ponies? Eventually you’ll discover your special talent, but for now just be yourselves. I know you hate hearing the phase, it’ll come in time, but it’s true.”

At this the three looked at each other, as the little light bulbs above their heads came on one at a time. “Star is right! If we got our cutie marks now who would help the others?” Scootaloo announced.

“Hey, maybe we could get our cutie marks in being inspirational ponies. What do you think that looks like?” Sweetie Belle chimed.

Jake smiled, feeling like his work here was done. “Well I have to be going now. I hope you give a lot of thought to what I’ve said. Remember it’s your actions and not a cutie mark that define who you are.”

“Wait, before you go. What were you doing in the woods?” Apple Bloom asked.

“Oh I was just in the area. But I really must be going. If you would like to visit I’m the house on the edge of town. I’m either there or at the library being taught by Twilight. See ya later.” With that Jake closed his eyes and took a deep breath and focused on the library. Once again there was a flash and a *SNAP* and Jake was gone. When he opened his eyes he was standing on the target. “YES! I finally did it!”

Twilight just cocked her head to one side. “Well almost. Where did you go this time?”

“The forest. I ran across Apple Bloom and her friends. They were being teased and I decided to step in and say something. At least when I teleported from that location I made it back here without heading off somewhere else.”

“Well, when you can teleport to the place you intend to go the first time instead of a side trip somewhere else to help others, then I will say you’ve got it. Till then you still need to practice. On that note, let’s call it a day. We’ll pick this up tomorrow.” Twilight said with a smile.

Jake went back home only to find three familiar fillies waiting on him. “Prince Star, we have something very important to ask you. You left before we had a chance and…” Apple Bloom trailed off and was brushing one front leg against the other.

“Yes? What is it, girls?” Jake’s curiosity was piqued. What could they want to ask him?

“We were wondering if you would like to become the newest cutie mark crusader, senior member because of your age even though you’re new an-“ Sweetie Belle was cut off with a hoof over her mouth by Scootaloo.

“Would you like to join?” Scootaloo cut to the point.

Jake smiled. This was going to make a very interesting story to tell Tia. He bowed and spread his wings. “It would be my honor to join your noble ranks.”

Apple Bloom stepped forward. “Then by unanimous decision, we welcome you, brother Star, to the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Please accept this scarf as a symbol of your membership.”

Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle placed the scarf over Jake’s head and as he straightened it hung around his neck with the crusader symbol sitting on his chest. After all the congratulations and hugs, the girls went home and Jake went inside. Not a bad day. He thought to himself. I wonder what tomorrow will bring.
He went upstairs and sat down at his desk and pulled out parchment and quill.
Dear Tia,
Today was fun. We got to teleporting and turns out I need to focus more. Every time I would jump I wound up finding somepony that needed my help. I hope your day was good, I miss you. No homework tonight. I am going to try and get the teleport thing right tomorrow.
I love you
Jake
P.S. I was also recruited into the cutie mark crusaders today…go figure.
He rolled and sealed the scroll, then went to bed.

. . .

Celestia was at the dinner table with her sister and had just finished reading Jake’s letter to her. “Sounds like he's doing very well there. I still miss having him around the castle. It's just not the same without him here,” Luna said with a weary smile.

“I know what you mean. The only reason I sent him away to learn from others was that I was starting to feel tired all the time. At first I told him that all his training would be handled here by us but with every passing day it just got harder to do,” Celestia looked about as tired as Luna.

“Tia, did you have the headaches again?”

“They come and go throughout the day but it’s nothing I can’t handle. What about you?”

Luna yawned, “I don’t get them as much but I must admit to having this draining feeling for awhile now. This had never happened to me before. What about you?”

“Not that I can recall. I had the royal physician look me over and he says I’m fine. He feels that I’m just over working myself.”

Luna gave her sister a whimsical look. “Seriously, we have never felt this way. Even before my 1000 year incident we never felt like this. It seems to be getting worst.”

“I know but I’m not sure what it could be?” Celestia said rubbing her head with her hoof.

“Have you told Jake about this?”

“No, and for now let’s keep it that way. He has enough on his plate to worry about without this. Besides we don’t even know what is going on. He needs to stay focused on his studies. He sounds so much happier now that he is really learning magic. If it gets really bad then we can tell him but for now just let him focus on his studies.”
“I don’t like keeping secretes from him,” Luna said looking worried.

“Nor do I but there isn’t anything he can do. We will look into this. For now though I think I will retire for the evening. Goodnight sweet sister.” As she said this Celestia walked around the table and nuzzled her sister on the side of her head.

“Good night Tia, sleep well.”

The months rolled by and Jake got stronger with magic. He learned spells that he never dreamed would be possible, manipulation of some pony’s age or sex. Changing the weather and making objects come to life. Now he never had to clean his house. Brooms, mops and a host of other cleaning supplies worked in concert to keep his place immaculate. Of all the spells he knew he loved that one the most. Jake understanding of magic seemed to have finally taken hold. He even knew how to use magic to make his physical body stronger, faster or even immune to disease. He was still learning the specifics of healing magic. That required a firm understanding of the equine anatomy and because of that he volunteered at the local hospital to learn more. Twilight was running out of stuff to teach him and soon he would have the last of his magical lessons finished with the royal sisters. They could teach him magic that only an alicorn could do.

He had other reasons for wanting to go back to the sisters. True he loved Ponyville and the friends he had made but he missed Celestia. Her visits were not often, at his request, and they never seemed long enough when she was there.

As for his flying, Rainbow Dash was the best flight instructor he could have hoped for. She taught him everything she knew. Flight had just come naturally to him given his past experience but it was more physically demanding now. While Twilight crammed his mind with knowledge, Rainbow Dash worked his body to the bone. Thanks to her style of training he was doing maneuvers in the air that he never would have attempted in his old life. Flying had always been an outlet for him. True, he does love to learn more about magic but a solid session with Twilight could leave any pony feeling mentally wiped out.

The morning was gorgeous and he was enjoying the wind in his face. He was supposed to meet up with Twilight in the park later. He wasn’t sure as to why she wanted to meet up with him at the park but it didn’t really matter for at that time all he cared about was pleasant morning scenery in front of him. He saw a cloud in front of him and he went down to pick up his speed. Then when he was passing underneath of it he pulled up and looped over the top of the cloud. At the top of the loop, he rolled up right and was off in the opposite direction. Seeing another cloud below, he dived and did a 180 degree turn only to pull into a hover over the cloud and come to land gently on top of it. He looked around and took in the site of Ponyville in the early morning light. In the distance was Canterlot the capital and in another direction the Ever Free forest.

Suddenly a familiar voice was heard behind him. “Getting in some early morning maneuvers I see. I’m glad to see that kind of spirit in a student.”

Jake turned to see his flight instructor Rainbow Dash hovering behind him. “Yeah morning flights are the best. Everything is so peaceful and still, although I wasn’t expecting an audience this morning.”

“Don’t mind me. I had the same idea as you. Hey, are you still meeting Twilight at the park later on?”

“Yes, why do you ask?”

“Oh no reasons, the rest of the girls are going to be there too. It’s a picnic. So what are you bringing?” Rainbow asked as she hovered around to face Jake.

“I didn’t know it was a picnic. I was just told to meet her. I didn’t know what was going on. I think the picnic is for you guys and she just needs me for something. I’m sure she would have said otherwise.”

“Ah come on. Of course you can come. Listen whatever book, lesson or egghead thing she’s got you doing you can still hangout. Seems like all you do is study or work. If you’re not with her you’re training with me. According to Twilight you’re getting good. Your flying isn’t too shabby either if I do say so myself. So what do ya say?”

“That’s the reason why I’m here Rainbow. I came to train and learn from you guys and then I’m going back to Canterlot. That’s why Princess Celestia sent me here remember.

“Yea, yea I remember and that’s cool and all but you really do need to relax. Besides, what’s the big hurry?” The blue pegasus gave Jake a curious look as she cocked her head to one side.

Jake was caught off guard by the question. He looked away trying to think of something as his mind raced. “Um, because I have important business back in Canterlot.”

“Really, like what?” Rainbow persisted.

Realizing he didn’t have anything he tried changing the topic. He let out a sigh and looked back with a smile. “Ok, you win. I’ll come to the picnic. So what are you bringing?”

“What? Other than myself I guess I will bring cider. You could bring some cupcakes if you like.”

“Done, I’ll be there this afternoon with cupcakes. Well I gotta go. I’ve got some homework for Twilight that needs to get done before this afternoon, later.” With that Jake allowed himself to fall through the cloud as he opened his wings and dove for the ground. He pulled up at the roof top and soared back to his home hoping Rainbow wouldn’t follow asking more questions.

It had been months and the only ponies that knew of him where the royal sisters and one chamber maid named Dusty. Even his romance to Princess Celestia was something he didn’t talk about. He felt it would bring up to many questions. How would the others feel if they really knew what he was and where he had come from? Would they be so eager to teach him? Especially Twilight, given how strongly she felt towards the princess. No, the time just didn’t seem right yet. He would have to tell them soon. He didn’t like keeping things from his friends but how do you come out and say “Hi, I’m an alien. Well not anymore since I died and was brought back to life by your ruler and oh, did I mention we’re dating?” He shook his head to clear his mind and landed at his front door.

. . . . . . .

That afternoon he met up with Twilight and the others at the park. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. The trees were changing color and the temperature was pleasant. The six mares had a checkered blanket laid out with all sorts of food and drink. Jake landed next to the blanket and took a box of cupcakes out of his saddle bag. “Hi everypony, I brought food.”

Everyone greeted him and Twilight apologized for not remembering to invite him to the picnic. “I’m so sorry again. I’ve had a lot on my mind.”

“Really it’s ok. Now what was the original reason you wanted me to meet you out here?” Jake asked as he took a bite of a cupcake.

“Well as you know you’ve been working really hard and I hate to say it but there isn’t much more I can teach you. You’ve been a great student and a fast learner. However I have one last test for you.”

“Oh, what is it?”

“As you know the royal costume party is being held at the Castle the end of this week. Your final exam is to go to that party.”

“Wait, what? How is that a final exam? I don’t understand.” Jake had confusion written all over his face.

“Oh, the test is that you have to go there in a magic costume. In other words you must use illusion magic to make a costume or change your appearance in some way. Watch and I’ll show you.” Twilight rose from the blanket and stepped away from the group. She focused her magic and a purple orah encompassed her body. Then suddenly she was in her dress Rarity had made for her at the Grand Galloping Galla. A collective gasp escaped the group.

“Hold on. If you could do this the whole times why even bother with me making a dress for you?” Rarity said with a hint of jealousy in her voice.

“It’s not that simple. This spell though simple requires my attention. I can’t keep this up forever. Beside I love your dresses and the effort you put into making them. I much rather wear one of your outfits that do this.” Twilight said trying to reassure her friend.

“Well if it’s so hard for ya to do that for a long time why are ya makin Star do it?” Applejack added.

“Because he’s an alicorn. His magic is more powerful than mine. That is how it has taken him only months and not years to learn all the spells I’ve been teaching him.”

“Wait, you said he can use magic to make a costume or change his appearance right? So you mean he could also look like other ponies?” Rainbow inquired looking a little stunned.

“Well, yes he can. He could even look like other creatures. It’s entirely up to your thought Star. I want to be surprised and the princesses will be judging. Besides we all have tickets to go to the party as well so we can see what you’re going to be.”

“He could even be a dragon? That would be so aweso..” Rainbow was silenced with Pinkie’s hoof over her mouth.

“That’s not important Dash. So Twilight, let me get this straight. We are going to a costume party at the castle this week?”

“I thought I just said that we were.” Twilight said.
Pinkie eyes went wide and she started to shake. Finally she shot into the air like a rocket with a trail of confetti behind her cheering all the way.

“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea Twilight. Remember last time we went to a Canterlot party? I just…I don’t know.” Fluttershy said in a small voice.

“Don’t worry darling. You just stick with us this time. Last time we split up and it was awful but this time we stick together.” Rarity walked over and gave Fluttershy and encouraging nudge.

“Ok ladies I guess it’s settled then. We’re going to a party. So, I’m not allowed to tell you what I’m going as?” Jake asked.

“Nope, I think it will be fun to guess or see what you come up with Star. Remember I want to be surprised.”

“Oh don’t worry.” Jake smiled at the thought. “I have an idea that will knock you right off of your horseshoes.”

“Great, now remember all you have to do for this spell is focus your magic on yourself and picture what you want to be. You must maintain your focus to hold this but for you this shouldn’t be hard. If the spell breaks you will turn back into yourself.” There is a flash and Twilight is back to normal.

“Ok got it. Well I better get started. If it’s all the same then I think I’ll hit the castle earlier this week unless there are any other lessons that I need.”

“I got nothin. You’re flying is great.” Rainbow said.

“That is all I have for you as well. So we will see you this weekend. Good luck.” The girls smiled and waved goodbye as Jake took off for home.

The next day Jake arrived at Canterlot castle via the train. He could have flown or even teleported but he wanted to check out the train. It was fun seeing the country side go by from his seat. He listened to the other passengers talk amongst themselves. Some were excited about going to the capital city. Others thought interesting that royalty would be traveling by rail. Jake just smiled to himself, regardless of his title he considered himself just a regular pony.

He hadn’t bothered to tell Celestia that he was coming today in hopes of surprising her. As the train pulled to the station the conductor announced, “Now arriving Canterlot!” He then walked over to Jake. “Your Highness I will have the royal guards come and escort you to the castle.”

Not wanting his surprise spoiled with all the fan fair. “No thank you sir. I know where I need to go but thank you.” With a smile on his face he teleported to the castle.

He appeared right on Celestia’s balcony. He knew she wouldn’t be in since it was mid morning. He had to be quick though. Word traveled fast around Canterlot and soon she would know he was back. As he walked into Celestia’s bedroom he found Dusty the chamber maid cleaning up. She was startled as Jake came walking in. “OH! I’m sorry your Highness. I didn’t know you were here.” Dusty bowed to Jake.

Jake walked over to Dusty. “I just got in. How are you?”

She rose, “I’m fine your highness. You do know we have doors you can use right?”

“I was hoping to surprise the princess. She doesn’t know I’m here yet, any idea where she might be?”

“Princess Celestia should be in the throne room hearing any disputes that need resolving. No, her favorite part of the day I can assure you.”

Jake looked around the room for something to hide in. As he opened her closet he found a black hooded cloak. “This will work just fine.”

“What are you doing going through my lady’s closet?” Dusty asked a little alarmed.

“Relax, I did say I’m here to surprise her didn’t I? Think maybe you could help me out?”

Seeming more relieved at what Jake was trying to do she said, “What do you have in mind?”

“I need you to lead me down to the throne room. If I try to walk around the castle with this cloak on I might get stopped by someone. With you leading me there ponies would assume I had just gotten lost.”

Dusty smiled at the thought “I can help you with that.”

With that Jake threw the cloak over himself and put the hood up. Dusty stepped into the hallway to make sure the coast was clear and then signaled Jake to follow. They made their way to the throne room. Once there they discovered the last person was being seen. Dusty walked over to the guard and told them they had one more to see her Majesty. Both guards eyed the hooded figure with suspicioun but made no move towards him. They had seen odd characters before and this was just another one. Besides that the figure looked feble and weak. So the guards just assumed that it was an elder pony. The one by the door made a note in his log and said "It will be just a moment."

"Thank you so much. He is an old friend of mine."

"That's what where here for. Just have him wait here and we will call when it's his time."

"You're all set. If you need anything just come and find me later ok?"

The hooded figured just nodded, and with that Dusty went back to her chors.

. . . . . . .

As Celestia finished hearing what she thought was the last case she looked to the royal guard. “So that’s every pony today?”

“No your Majesty there is a last minute arrival.”

Outwardly she kept herself composed but inwardly she didn’t want to hear another petty argument. In fact what she really wanted to do was go see Jake in Ponyville. How much longer was it going to take for his training to be finished? She knew it was for the best for him to be there but that didn’t mean she missed him any less. She let out a mental sigh “Please show them in.”

The cloaked figure walked in hunched over and moving slowly. “How may I help you this morning?” Celestia asked.

The figure said nothing as it approached and stopped just before the stairs to her throne. “Are you alright? What brings you before me today?” Celestia asked again her curiosity was up.

The figure bowed slowly and rose with what seemed like difficulty. “Good morning to you. I have traveled far to gaze upon the mythical beauty of Princess Celestia. But mine eyes are failing me. Would you be so kind as to come closer so that I may witness thine own beauty?” The hooded figure said in a feeble small voice.

“You came here just to see me; I mean just to look at me? Of course I would be my honor.” Celestia said being touched that this was all this pony wanted. She had to admit that is was an unusual request but this beat listening to another pointless argument. She approached the figure and spread her wings. She seemed to radiate light and color. She stood before the hooded figure now. “Is this what you desire?”

Jake stood to his full height and tossed the hood back. “Every day and every night.”

It took a couple of seconds for it to set in that the pony before her was, “STAR!”

She leaned in a kissed him. “What are you doing here? I thought you would be in Ponyville still studying?”

“I’m all done save for one last exam. That is to come in costume to the party here this weekend. I’m to use illusion magic for the costume.”

“That’s great, but you’re done already? I figured it would have taken you longer.” She said as she stepped back to take him all in.

"What’ no faith in me? I had great teachers. This is why I was so focused on my studies so that I could get through them quickly and get back here to you."

Celestia blushed hard. “Oh Star I missed you so much.” She came to his side and leaned on him.

“You know I don’t know if I’m ever going to get used to hearing you call me by that name.” Jake said smiling as they leaned on one another.

Celestia gave a quick look around. “Just keeping up appearances Jake.”

“That’s another thing. I think it’s time to let Twilight and the others in on our little secrete. They have done well and it can’t really hurt. Plus I know they want to know more about me and I don’t like lying to them.” Jake said as he turned to look at Celestia.

“I’ve always said that would be up to you. If you’re ready then we will do it.”

About this time Princess Celestia’s royal assistant Kibitz came into the throne room. “Excuse me Princess but you still have a meeting with delegation from Manehatten and oh. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were here Prince Star.”

Jake turned towards Kitbitz as he walked up to them. “It’s alright. I just came by to surprise her. I’m not here to mess up her schedule.”

Celestia looked disappointed. “If I knew you were coming I would have made time.”

“It’s ok. Technically I didn’t even know I was coming till yesterday and a surprise sounded fun. You do what you have to do and we will meet up tonight for dinner.”

“Alright but your sure you will be ok?”
Jake kissed Celestia on the cheek. “I’ll be fine get going.” And with that he bid Kibitz farewell and left the throne room.

. . . . . .

That afternoon Jake walked to Luna’s room around the time she usually received her wake up call. The maid was standing by the door as Jake walk up. “Good afternoon Prince Distant Star, welcome back. I was just getting ready to wake Princess Luna. I know she will be thrilled your back.” The maid bowed before Jake.

“Good afternoon to you as well, if you don’t mind I think I will wake the Princess.”

The maid looked a little shocked. “Are you sure? She can be somewhat fussy about taking visitors before she is ready.”

“I will take full responsibility don’t worry. She doesn’t know I’m back yet and this will be fun.” Jake said with a smile and a wink.

“Of course your Grace. Then here is her coffee and I shall come back later.” The maid nodded to the tray sitting on a small table with a cup of coffee sitting on a saucer.

“I’ll see that she gets it thank you.”

The maid bowed once more and was off. Jake walked to the door and knocked gently as he opened the door slowly. There was no answer so Jake levitated the tray into the chamber and set it on a small table in the center of the room. It was just as he had remembered it from the last time. The TV and the gaming system were in one corner along with a couch. There were drapes that Jake assumed led out onto another balcony. Where Celestia’s room seemed bright since she ruled the day, Luna’s room represented the night. Her ceiling looked like the night sky. There was a large throw rug under the table with a crescent moon on it. An assortment of furniture was about the room and in corner was the bed. A large crescent moon adorned the large black blanket that covered most of Luna.

Jake approached her as quietly as he could. She was dead to the world. Her usual beautiful flowing main was now the worst case of bed hair Jake had ever seen. Her mouth was huge open and a string of drool was running down the corner of her mouth. As he got to within inches from her Jake could hear the faintest of snoring coming from her. Oh God this is too good. Jake blew lightly on her. Luna scrunched her face ever so slightly. He then cleared his throat and Luna started to groan as a hoof came up to wipe the drool from her face and she smacked her lips. “Silver Shade is that you?” Luna asked in a groggy voice her eyes still closed.

“Um hmm” Jake answer suppressing the biggest smile ever. I really wish I had a camera right about now.

Luna yawned and stretched as she sat up in bed rubbing her eyes. “You know Silver Shade I wish I could wake up to a big handsome stallion like my sister has. How come she gets to have Prince Yummy Delicious and I…” At this point Luna finally opened her eyes to find that she is looking into the face of Jake.

“Good afternoon. Who’s Prince Yummy Delicious?” Jake says with a broad smile on his face.

Luna turned the brightest shade of red there is. “J Jake, how long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough to know that you drool, snore and think I’m yummy and delicious.” At this point Jake knew by the look on Luna’s face that she either wanted to die, or kill him.

Luna pulled the covers up over her head and proceeded to hide from Jake. “Sweet Celestia, I can’t believe you heard all that.” She peeked out from underneath the covers. “I’m so sorry, I…I please don’t tell Tia.”

Jake cocked his head to one side. “Sorry? Sorry for what? Come out of there. It’s time to get up.”

“Nope, I’m staying in bed. My night is destroyed and I can’t face you. Beside I don’t want you to see me like this.”

“So you think I’m cute, what’s wrong with that? Why would Tia care what you think? Besides I wanted to surprise you and this is was just too good to pass up.”
“Because you’re her special somepony and I don’t want her to think I’m up to something.”

Jake began to laugh. “I’m sorry, this is just too funny. You're fine, we're fine. I’ve missed you too you know. Tia isn’t going to care about this, trust me. She trusts you completely and so do I. The only question I have is who came up with that nick name and how long has it been going on?”

Luna slowly emerged from beneath the sheets and avoided eye contact. “The servants came up with it and it has stuck.”

Jake still chuckled and leaned over and kissed Luna on her burning cheek. “It’s good to see you again.” Instantly Luna’s wings flew out rigid. “What the?!”

Luna pushed Jake away. “Don’t look!”

Jake looked away instantly. “What’s going on with your wings? Are you alright?” There was real concern in Jake’s voice now.

“Nothing, it’s nothing. I’m fine really but I need you to leave now.”

“Um ok, I’ll see ya at dinner. Oh, the coffee is on the table.” Jake said as he made for the door.

“Coffee on table got it…I mean thank you.”

Later before dinner Jake caught up with Celestia and told her all about the prank he pulled on Luna. Celestia laughed so hard she started to tear up. “Well, that’s good. We missed you. There are times that Luna can be so proper and hearing her getting that flustered is funny.” Celestia said as she wiped a tear from her eye.

“Yeah but the whole wing thing I didn’t get. Also I think it best that we don’t mention it to her she was pretty embarrassed. I should probably apologize.”
“No no she will be fine and as for her wings…that hasn’t happened to you yet?” Celestia asked.

“Not that I can remember.” Jake said looking at the ceiling as he tried to recall.

Celestia looked at him with her beautiful eyes in a way that made Jake feel a little uneasy. She leaned in close as to whisper in his ear in a satin voice. “Well, I’ll tell you all about it tonight when we are really alone.”

Suddenly Jake’s wings shot up and rigid. Celestia laughed, “Do you understand now?”

Jake blushed, “Yup, I’ve got the idea. Give me a second ok.” He closed his eyes and took a few calming breathes and his wing relaxed themselves once more.

At dinner Jake told them all about why he had come back. “So that’s why I’m here. I have to use magic to go in disguise to this party.”

Luna looked puzzled. “That sounds rather easy for an exam. I would have expected more from Twilight.”

“Now Luna it is not for us to judge the methods of how Twilight wishes to teach. However this does seem a little easy.” Celestia said in between bites of her dinner.

“Well she said she ran out of things to teach me. This is it and most of the training has been intense. So I’m glad for an easy test at the end.” Jake said looking from one sister to the other.

“So what are you going as, a costume or maybe a full illusion all together?” Luna asked.

“Oh, I know what I’m going as. Trust me; you’ll know when you see me. But for now it’s my little secret. I want everyone to be surprised.
“I’m sure it will be great whatever you decide, but first a toast, to Jake; welcome home.” Celestia said has she levitated her glass.

“Hear hear!” Cheered Luna.

“Thanks girls. It’s good to be back.” Jake said raising his own glass.

“Now, tell us all about your time in Ponyville. I want to hear it all.” Celestia said and with that the rest of the night Jake spend telling of his adventures in training.

The Truth Comes Out

The week seemed to fly by leading up to the party. The castle was very busy leading up to it and Jake would often take strolls outside the castle just to get away from it all and look around. The surrounding city had so much to offer. Shops, theaters, museums you name it they had it. The captain of the guard had suggested that a body guard be sent with him for protection. “After all it wouldn’t look right for royalty to be wondering around unprotected” he’s said.

Jake had politely declined the captain’s offer and said that he would be fine. In fact Jake just didn’t want someone trying to baby sit him. He was more than capable of taking care of himself. After leaving Joe’s Doughnut Shop, (which had come highly recommended by Spike), Jake made his way over to the park. There was a group of fillies and colts gathered around a small stage that looked like it was wagon. As Jake got closer he noticed that it was a puppet show. The small cart was decorated with streamers and masks adorned the corners. The stage was painted blue with golden starts and the little curtains were red. There was a small partition up that read The Great and Humble Trixie’s Traveling Puppet & Magic Show. Jake stood in the back of the crowd of children and their parents to watch. He had walked in near the end of a story where this little blue puppet with a pointed blue hat and stars was repenting her wicked ways to a familiar looking purple puppet. As the curtains drew closed the children cheered and clapped their hooves. The puppet master came out from behind the little stage and took a bow. She was a blue unicorn with a white main. She wore what looked like a wizard’s hat with star and she had a cloak on.

“Thank you, thank you everypony. You’ve been an amazing audience but are you ready for more?” The blue unicorn asked.

The children cheered and of course answered “YES.”

“Then the Great and Humble Trixie shall perform some amazing tricks for you!”

She used her magic to levitate her hat in front of her upside down. She grasped it with one foreleg and circled the other over top. “And now I shall pull a rabbit from my hat.”

With that she plunged her hoof into the hat and produced a rabbit. The children cheered but off to one side of the audience came the statement “Lame!”

Jake looked over to see a group of teenagers and one of them seemed like he wanted to share his opinion with the rest of the world.

Trixie ignored the comment and continued the show like a professional. “Now pay attention children. You don’t want to miss Trixie’s next trick.”

She produced several long balloons from her hat and with her magic immediately blew them up and started twisting them together. Soon she had made a giraffe and an elephant, which proceeded to start dancing around on stage all by themselves. The children again cheered.

“That was pathetic! We wanna see some real magic, none of this kiddy garbage.”

Alright I’m done listening to this jerk. Before Trixie could say anything Jake turned towards the teens. “Excuse me, but your interrupting a great show here.”

Everyone looked at Jake and immediately bowed. “Everyone rise, please. So what is your problem?”

The teen rose but still had the wicked look in his eyes. “She’s a fraud. These are parlor tricks. I want to see some REAL magic.”

Jake looked back at Trixie who seemed a little nervous. Jake remembered that Trixie at one time had been full of herself and caused trouble for Ponyville but that was in the past. She certainly didn’t deserve this especially from some loud mouthed colt.

“Ok, well I happen to know that Trixie saves the best for last.” With that he turned and walked toward her. “For your next trick I would like to see an age spell. I will gladly volunteer myself.”

Trixie got close enough to Jake so that only he could hear her. “Your Highness, I can’t do that. I’m not that good.” She looked almost panicked.

“Don’t worry, you can do this. All I need you to do is create a distraction and I will help you.” Jake said as he winked at her.

Trixie closed her eyes and took a breath. Then she stood on her back legs and through her front hooves in the air. “Very well, since we have some neigh sayers in the audience. The Great and Powerful Trixie shall show you an age spell. This can only be done by the highest level of unicorn. Prepare yourselves to be amazed.”

The air around Jake began to glow blue and he levitated off the ground. Trixie was the picture of concentration and focus as beads of sweat started to form on her head around her glowing horn. Her jaw was set into a line as she bore her teeth and then there was a flash of light and Jake was a very young colt. He stood on his back leg and threw his front hooves out to his sides with his wings spread, “TA DA!”

The crowd of children were now jumping up and down and cheering like crazy. The teens just stood there in awe. Trixie looked surprised herself. The heckler tried to hide his amazement. “S-so, big deal.”

“Wow everything so much taller.” Jake walked among the children as they touched him and walked around him to make sure he was real. He then walked back over to Trixie. “Oh Great and Powerful Trixie, could you please return me to my former self?”

“But of course, stand back every pony so that the Great and Powerful Trixie can work.” Once again she cast her spell and Jake was enveloped by a blue glow and with a flash Jake was an adult again only this time he was a stunning Mare.

The children again cheered. Some of the teen's friends had their eyes pop out with tongues hanging out. The heckler couldn’t believe his eyes. Off in the distance some pony even whistled at Jake and some cat calls could be heard. He or she looked down at herself. “Oh poo, I wasn’t a mare before. Now you’re just teasing me Trixie but I must say I look amazing. What do you boys think?”

Jake walked slowly around the group of teens who eyed him with hunger. “So are you impressed now?” Jake said as she took her tail and ran it from one side of the heckler’s face underneath his chin and to the other side.

She looked back over her shoulder and looked seductively at the teen. He looked as though he was about to lose control. Suddenly the heckler remembered that Jake use to be stallion. The embarrassment on his face was painfully obvious as he turned bright red. “Th-this is stupid. We’re outta here.” With that he pushed through his friends and walked quickly away as his friends took one last look at Jake and followed him.

“Good riddance to rude people,” Jake said with a smirk on her face. “So could you please make me a stallion once more?”

“The Great and Humble Trixie shall grant your request.”

This time she flung her head in Jake’s direction, kicked up her back legs and planted her front legs in the ground as a beam of magic shot from her horn. It struck Jake dead on and with a flash he was a stallion once more. The audience which had grown during this time from children to many adults now cheered and stomped their hoofs in applause. Trixie stood forth and took a bow and then pointed towards Jake who came forward and took a bow. After the show Trixie signed autographs and people tipped her with bits. Jake looked on and smiled and then turned to leave. “Wait!”

Jake stopped and turned to see Trixie run up to him. “You weren’t going to just leave without saying goodbye where you? You saved me back there. The whole show could have been ruined by that jerk and you saved me.”

“What are you talking about? You were the one casting those spells, not me.” Jake said as he tried to fake innocence.

Trixie looked away from him and rubbed one foreleg against the other. “No I didn’t. Those spells are way out of my league. It was all you.”

Jake stole a quick glance around to make sure no one was close. Then he took a hoof and gently turned Trixie head so that she was looking him in the eyes. “I know that and you know that but THEY don’t know that. Besides a good magician never reveals her secretes.” Jake said with a wink and a smile.

Trixie blushed, “Oh well, your right but let me at least give you something to show my thanks.”

She used her magic to levitate a portrait of herself and a quill. She then signed it; To my handsome assistant. Thanks for all your help. Magically yours Trixie.

She handed it to him. “Oh and if I may be so bold, your Highness?”

“The name is Distant Star, but you can just call me Star if you like. What would you like to ask me?”

Trixie walked closer and leaned her head against the side of his neck. She nuzzled it gentle with her eyes closed, “Thank you again.”

Jake just smiled and returned her nuzzle, “Anytime, it’s what I do.”

With that Trixie took a step back and bowed. Then the two parted ways as Jake went back to the castle.

. . . . .

Jake stood in front of a mirror that was very familiar to him. It was the gateway back to Earth. He closed his eyes and focused on himself. His horn glowed white and then a flash of light and Jake was human once more, (or at least in appearance). He was just as he remembered himself. He was a tall, well build, blonde haired, blue eyed man. He turned from one side to another examining himself in the mirror. He was wearing a black and white tuxedo that (thanks to magic), fit perfectly. Satisfied with the end result he walked around the room testing to make sure that the spell wouldn’t break. He then heard a voice outside the room. “I’m going to change for the party. Tell Luna to come see me when she is done.” It was Celestia coming it, this was perfect.

Jake quickly jumped out onto the balcony and waited till Celestia was in the room alone. Once he was sure that she was he called to her. “Hi hon, are you done for the day?”

“Well most of it. Now comes the party which some of these things can feel like work. Thank Luna, that Twilight and her friends are coming. They always manage to brighten up the mood of what would otherwise be a stuffy boring party for rich ponies.”

Jake came in from the balcony and walked up behind Celestia, who was deciding whether to go in costume tonight or not. “So when am I going to get to see what you’re going as?” Celestia called out.

“Why don’t you turn around and see for yourself?”

Celestia turned and was stunned speechless for few seconds. The only noise escaping her was a *gasp* as she covered her mouth with a hoof. The last time she had seen Jake as a human was the day they had their date on Earth, which ended with Jake’s death.

“Hello Angel. Long time no see.” Jake reached out a hand and lightly touched the side of Celestia’s face.

“Jake?” Celestia said as tears started to form in her eyes.

“What’s wrong? I didn’t mean to upset you.” Jake smile turned to concern.

“It’s just that, it’s like seeing a ghost. The last time I saw you this way you were covered in blood and a corps. Now you’re…” Celestia’s words trailed off.

Jake took his hand and gently brushed the tears from her eyes and then held her in his arms. “What have I told you before? Angels shouldn’t cry. Besides that is in the past and it was my call. I kept you safe and that was important. Please stop blaming yourself.”

Jake felt her draw him closer in. “I know all that but still. This is your true form and I…”

“That’s enough” he whispered. “I loved you then and I love you now. No questions or doubts about it. No pony can know what the future holds. Besides it has worked out and we have each other now.”

Jake broke the embrace and took a step back. “So what do you think? Is this an A+ costume or what?”

Celestia started to feel better as she looked him over. “You’ll always get an A+ in my book but if I knew this was what you were going as I would have dressed to match.”

With that she transformed into her beautiful human self. She had the same long flowing blond hair, with lavender eyes. She was shorter than Jake by only a little and she wore the same light blue summer dress with white sandals.
“Remember this?” She said as she was enjoying the surprised look on Jake’s face.

“How could I forget? I don’t care what form you are, you’re still a beauty.” As Jake embraced her it was like going back to the first moment when they were in his room on Earth holding each other when she had arrived.

At this point Luna came walking into the room. “Alright sis what did you want to see me about?” She caught sight of the two embraced and in human form. “Oh! Jake?”

The two separated and turned to Luna. Jake smiled and walked up to her. “Hi Luna, so what do you think of my costume?”

Luna walked around Jake looking him over. “So this is what you looked like on Earth?” She looked towards Celestia in human form. “So are you going this way too?”

Celestia smiled, “Maybe.”

“I wish to try being human too.” Luna horn glowed and in a flash she was a stunning raven haired woman wearing nothing but a tiara and a smile. “So what do you think of my human form Jake?”

Luna stood confidently before him. Jake eyes went wide. Luna could have passed for an underwear model. He quickly turned away from her and looked at the ceiling. “You don’t like it do you?” Luna seemed to wilt as Jake turned away so quick.

“NO no, just the opposite, you’re beautiful.” Jake said giving a thumbs-up in approval.

“Then why do you look away? Look into my eyes and tell me that.” Luna had her hands on her hips and looked a little irritated.

Jake looked at Luna’s naked form. Her alabaster skin, dark eyes and long dark hair and everything else was the image of human physical perfection and beauty. “You look amazing, really.” Then Jake quickly looked away again to avoid gawking at her.

“I don’t understand why you keep looking away then. You had no problems looking at Tia. So why won’t you look at me?”

“Because you’re naked Luna.” Jake said flatly.

“So, we’re almost always naked. What does that have to do with anything?”

“Humans don’t usually run around in the nude unless umm…” It was becoming difficult to think with Luna just standing there in her birthday suite.

Picking up on the fact that Jake found her attractive and her nudity was bothering him. She decided a little payback was in order for a certain wakeup call earlier in the week. She seductively walked over and wrapped herself around him. “So what you’re saying is that me naked in this form makes you uncomfortable.” She took her index finger and started drawing little circles on his chest.

Jake looked to Celestia for help and saw her redden. She was jealous of her sister hanging all over him. “Luna, knock it off. Besides Jake thinks my body is better.” And with a snap of her fingers Celestia was naked as well.

This is too much. Please someone help me. Jake thought as the shock of Celestia naked stunning form wrapped herself around him.

Celestia took Jake by the chin and looked deep into his eyes. “So which of us looks better, me?”

Luna turned Jake to look at her. “Or me?

Oh, God save me please! “I would be impolite to judge, you’re both so lovely.” Jake said his voice under considerable strain and his face burned.

“Hey, what’s this?” Luna said as she poked Jake below the belt.

TOO MUCH, shutting down. That was all he could take. It was impossible to hold the spell any longer and instantly he turned back into an alicorn. His wings rigid, his face burning red, and no more blood flowed to his brain but instead out his nose, Jake passed out. He awoke to two very concerned looking alicorn princesses watching over him. Luna was magically fanning him while Celestia had a cool wash cloth on his head.

“We’re so sorry Jake. We didn’t mean to take it so far? Are you alright?” Luna said looking concerned.

“Yes, we didn’t mean to break you sweetheart.” Celestia chimed in.

“I’m fine now, thanks. Just too much uh, stimulation at once that’s all.” Jake said as he slowly got to his feet with the help of the sisters.

“Well now, that is over with. Do you know if Twilight and her friends have arrived yet?” Jake asked the both of them.

“Yes, they were each given rooms in the east wing.” Celestia said.

“Well I better get over there and pass my final.”

“We’re coming with you. There will be lots of questions and Luna and I should be there to help answer them. After all, you are who you are because of us.” Celestia said as she took her place next to Jake.

“I agree this has been a long time coming. You shouldn’t have to do this alone. Also, what did you want to see me about Tia?”

“Oh, that’s right, what are you going as tonight?”

“What else, Nightmare Moon.”

“You always go as Nightmare Moon.” Celestia said rolling her eyes.

“What? She’s a great get up.”

. . . . .

The three walked to the east wing of the castle. They knocked on every pony’s door to make sure they were all in the same room when this went down. Finally everyone was gathered into Twilight’s room. “Princess Celestia what did you want to tell us?” Twilight asked.

“It’s not me. Prince Distant Star has something he would like to say to all of you.”

All eyes turned to Jake. He took a deep breath and began. “I consider you all my friends. You have all had questions about me, my past, about my home, etc. but I have always avoided giving you the answers you seek. I was afraid that I would be rejected and shunned.”

The response was a wave of “How could you think that, or absolutely not. We would never do such a thing,” from the mares and a dragon.

Jake held up a hoof and the room went quiet. “What I’m about to tell all of you must be kept secret. The world as a whole would not understand. Can I depend on all of you?”

Pinkie stood forth, “Well of course you can silly. Ready every pony and Spike, its Pinkie promise time. Cross our hearts and hope to die stick a cupcake in our eye.” They said as they crossed their chests.

“Very well then, this is my story but first I think you should know what I use to really look like.” Jake’s magic transformed him once again into a human in a tux.

The collective *gasp* should have cause the room to implode but the walls held. “My real name is Jake. I’m a human male from a planet known as Earth. At least I use to be till almost a year ago. I promise I’m no threat and you can come and look and touch me. I promise I’m still the same pony and won’t bite.”

One by one they group came forward to look and touch Jake. Then when every pony seemed satisfied he took a seat and started his tale of how he met Princess Celestia through a magic mirror. Celestia would add her side of the story and used her magic to put up images in the air of her visit to Earth. Every pony just sat silently not wanting interrupt the tale. When they got to the part of the visit there some giggles at the funny parts and tears at the sad. At the end Twilight and her friends found out how friendship had turned to love, which turned to sacrifice, which turned into present day. Jake finished the story and for the first time in a long time was really nervous. At first there was just silence then Pinkie spoke up.

“Well I for one am happy you’re here. Doesn’t it feel good to finally get that off your chest? I know you’ve been struggling with that secrete for so long.”

The whole room just stared at her. “Pinkie, you’re telling us that you knew this whole time that he wasn’t a pony?” Celestia said.
“Well duh. I thought you guys knew too and we were just going to let him tell us in his own time.”

Jake burst out laughing. “That’s Pinkie for ya. She is the most connected pony to the universe. No one knows how or why but Pinkie just knows these things. It’s like her Pinkie sense, don’t try to understand it.”

“So that is why you didn’t go to my brother’s wedding? You knew what was going to happen and the outcome.” Twilight said fixing Jake with a stare. “What else do you know?”

“Only what I saw on the show. So far the time line has run its course. I can’t get involved because that could alter the future. You of all ponies should understand the dangers of time and knowledge of the future.”

Twilight nodded her head in agreement. “Tell me this. Do our collective futures as a whole look good?”

Every pony and Spike looked to Jake. “Yes, your lives will be good ones but remember my knowledge only comes from the show I saw on Earth. The writers could have gotten some of it wrong in which case the future like always is unknown.”

Twilight had a serious expression on her face as she nodded again in agreement. She then looked to Celestia. “I don’t always understand the enormous responsibilities you may have Princess Celestia but as your faithful and most trusted student you could have come to me or any of us with this. We aren’t just your subjects, we are your friends. It was you who knew the importance of friendship when you sent me to Ponyville. She seemed a little upset with the Princess which was unusual for Twilight.

“I’m sorry Twilight. It’s very difficult being me sometimes. This crown can get very heavy.”

“I’m sure it can but I’m saying this for the future. You are here for every pony let us be there for you. Remember no pony is an island. That is why we have friends.”

At this last statement Celestia looked to Luna who was wearing a little smile. She too had made the same statement to her long ago. She looked back to her student feeling so loved. “It appears the teacher is the student in this case. Thank you Twilight for reminding me of this truth.” The ponies all came and group hugged Celestia.

Jake just watched and smiled. Now Celestia had more ponies in her life. Then the groups broke apart and Twilight walked over to Jake and spoke a serious tone. “And as for you Jake, this is for you.”

She used her magic to bring Jake down to one knee and then kissed his cheek and embraced him. “Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving Princess Celestia not only with your friendship and love but with your life. There is no greater gift that can be given by any other pony then to willingly give your life for another.

Jake could feel hot tears hit his neck. Twilight was crying. "Our world…I owe you a debt that can never be repaid. You were nervous about what we would think of you after all that you’ve done? She knew you for a couple of weeks but you knew her for a life. Then in one day you gave up your future for her.”

The next thing Jake knew he was surrounded by every pony and one little dragon in a massive group hug. “We’re here for ya big guy” Spike said.

“Friends forever and always.” Pinkie Pie added.

“You have a great big ol family in all of us now.” Said Applejack

“And no matter where you may go…”Fluttershy started

“We will always be with you.” Rainbow Dash finished

“What you see darling what we are trying to say…” Rarity began.

“Is that we love you.” Twilight ended.

There was so must compassion in the room Jake was over whelmed. If there was heaven to found in Equestria Jake was already there. Tears ran down his face of joy, of relief, and of love for every soul in the room. “I…I don’t know what to say?” Jake said his voice breaking. “I love you all so much. Thank you for not hating me. Thank you for understanding.

“Oh and one more thing Jake, you passed your final” Twilight said.

There was an overall giggle from the group who still wouldn’t let go on one another. “But I haven’t even gone to the party yet using magic.” Jake mumbled.

“Oh Jake, I just wanted you to go to the party. As my mentor once told me, I respect your dedication but you simply must stop reading those dusty old books.” Twilight said remembering the advice the Princess Celestia has once given her.
The party that evening was amazing. Jake and the group decided that it would be best that he not go as his human self. That might cause a panic which would equal a stampede and as funny as that sounded some pony might actually have gotten hurt. So he went as a Gryphon instead. But the real event for that evening was what happened in Twilight’s room, where the true meaning of harmony was shown.

Fleeting Joy

The party that evening was one for the history books. Celestia had been right all along about things getting interesting when Twilight and her friends were around. Or more to the point when there was a party and Pinkie was involved. At first it was the usual social gathering of Canterlot elite, with every pony complementing one another on their outfits and standing in line to shake hooves with royalty. Good thing for Jake he was disguised as a gryphon, every pony thought he was some kind of ambassador instead of royalty. The ballroom was lavish with sculptures of the royal sisters and flowers in vases that adorned the walls. There were tables set to the outside for ponies to sit with candles on them. There were buffet tables set to the outside as well and the center of the room was for dancing. The stage was up front with musicians playing. The music was boring the food was…elegant (which means stuff that is expensive yet not very good). Rainbow looked like she was going to die from boredom. Applejack couldn’t stand the food. Fluttershy was trying to blend into the wall, while Twilight stood by Princess Celestia trying to spend some time with her. Rarity was trying to keep Prince Blue Blood at bay with Spike standing by her side. Seeing the sad state of the party Pinkie was prompted to action. She covertly walked around to every punch bowl and without any pony noticing produced a silver flask which she would add a little something extra to the punch. In no time at all the party started to become what some would refer to as “more colorful”. The most uptight, elitist ponies were starting to really let down their manes. The first sign of this happening was the music starting to pick up from classical to something that could hold a beat. The dancing became more erratic as did the party goers. Every time the punch bowls got refreshed Pinkie would make her rounds putting in her special ingredient. Finally Jake walked up to Pinkie.

“What are you doing?”

Pinkie giggled as she took a sip from the flask. “I call this Pinkie’s brew, guaranteed to put life into any party or your money back.”

“You mean alcohol.” Jake said flatly.

“Sir, you wound me. This isn’t just plain old booze; this is my family’s own secret formula that I brought with me from the rock farm. After a hard day on the farm this reduces pain, warms you up and chases away the blues.”

And also completely knocks you on your plot, don’t forget that one Pinkie. “So what you have there is good old fashion moonshine.”

Pinkie seemed blown away by Jake’s last comment. “Wow, that’s amazing. You didn’t tell me you could read minds.”

“I can’t but it doesn’t take a mind reader to see this. But take it easy ok, that stuff will kill ya.”

“Okie dokie lokie.” And she bounced back to the dance floor.

Jake had seen what was going on and had decided to stick with water for the evening. Too bad he was the only one who could say that. Twilight was ripping up the dance floor with her own unique style of dancing. As Jake kept walking around the room he came across Rarity having a heated discussion with Prince Blue Blood.

“You can’t be serious. You’re telling me that your date tonight is that little pipsqueak of a dragon?”

Rarity got into Blue Blood’s face with flushed cheeks and hint of slurred speech. “H-he’s more of a gentle ssstallion then you’ll ever be.”

“Oh yea, he’s not even a pony. That’s just creepy, I mean sure if he was your servant and all but your date? He doesn’t even have a title, I’m far superior.”

About this time Spike came back holding two glasses of punch. “Here you are Lady Rarity, some punch for you.”

“Thank you Spike, see, this is how your treat a lady. *hick* With that she downed the grass in one shot.
“I remember your deplorable behavior from the Grand Galloping Gala. Yyyou’re no gentlepony.”

Blue Blood had a smug look on his face. “Ha, you were in love with me from the start. Stallions like me don’t chase mares. Mares like you chase me.”

Rarity took a wobbly step backwards in disgust. As Spike went to steady her she looked at him and smile wolfishly. She then gave a sideways glance towards Blue Blood. “Well, I’m sorry to say but you don’t know everything.” With that she turned and planted a nice kiss on Spike in front of Blue Blood.

At seeing this Blue Blood recoiled in horror and then proceeded to retreat. Spike’s body went rigid and he almost passed out but Rarity caught him. “Darling how about we get some fresh air?”

Spike in a dreamlike state of shock just smiled and nodded his head as the two walked to one of the outside patios.

I hope she isn’t going to regret that one in the morning. He thought to himself as he went to check on the others. He found Applejack talking to a group of gentle stallions. As Jake got closer he could hear her making a sales pitch about how her Apple Family treats where better than anything they had here. Somehow she even had a sample for them to try and it seemed to be working. Even smashed out of her mind she was ever the business pony looking out for the family.

Suddenly he heard singing coming from the stage and it was Fluttershy?! She had a drink in one hoof and the microphone in the other. She was singing some old song that Jake couldn’t remember the title. She was really getting into it though. Finally he found Rainbow Dash with her role models the Wonderbolts. They were trading stories of each of their daring exploits as high risk aerial acrobats.

Satisfied that all of his friends/family were OK he went to check on the royal sisters. He decided to pick up his pace when from outside he could hear “ooohh, ahhh”.

Upon looking outside Jake discovered that one minute the moon was up then the next minute the sun was up. Jake jaw hit the floor as his eyes bugged out. AAAHHHHH!!!! Panic ran through his mind as he took to the air to look for the sisters. It didn’t take him long to find them on one of the towers giggling like a couple of fillies at play. “WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?!” Jake yelled with panic written all over his face.

“Oh hhhi you. Wee weerrreee just playing night time, day time.” Celestia said obviously very intoxicated.

“It’sss a lot of fun. Oooh, want somme punch?” Luna asked levitating a cup towards Jake.

“Put the moon back up and the sun down NOW!” Jake said.

“Okkay Mr. Bossy pants. Sheesh we were just having a little funnn.” Celestia slurred.

With that the sun set immediately and the moon resumed its normal position. Jake whipped the sweat from his brow. Whew, crisis averted. Luna started to giggle. “Hey sis, you called him Mr. Bossy pants but hee isn’t wearing any. Heh”

Celestia looked at Jake still in his gryphon form as she swayed back and forth. “You’re right he isn’t.”

Suddenly the two were laughing uncontrollably as they fell over and rolled around. Royal bearing and common sense gone, thanks Pinkie. Jake just shook his head. “Seriously, you can’t play like that. You could’ve scared a lot of innocent ponies.”

“Ahhh, come on, we didn’t mean any harm?” Luna said trying to look innocent.

“What she said Prince Yummy Delicious.” Celestia said with a mischievous grin on her face. “I have to wonder, you do look yummy but are you really delicious? Inquiring minds want to know.” Celestia looked from Jake to her sister who was getting the idea and back towards Jake.

Jake suddenly felt like a scared rabbit cornered by Timber Wolves. He had to think fast before something happened he knew the sisters would regret in the morning. “Hey I have an idea. Let me try something new using my magic but I’ll need you both in the bed.”

“My room is closer!” Luna squeaked and with more speed and coordination then he thought possible by either one of them in their current state they dashed off towards her room.

Jake caught up with them in Luna’s bed awaiting his arrival. He had transformed back to his alicorn self and approached them. “Now I want you both to relax by taking a slow big breath in and letting it out slowly.”

Both of them did as instructed and then Jake’s horn began to glow. Using telekinesis he began to message both sisters simultaneously. He did their wings, their heads, necks, legs and backs. This went on for only about five minutes before Jake could hear rhythmic breathing from both of them. This let him know that both were now sound asleep. He covered the two with a blanket and made sure a glass of water was on either side of the bed on the night stands. He also made sure there were buckets by each one just in case Pinkie’s brew decided to make a comeback in the middle of the night. After that he went back to check on the rest of the party.

Once he returned he found Twilight, Pinkie and Fluttershy singing Love is in bloom at the top of their lungs on stage. It’s seemed though the party was winding down. Most of the guest had started to stumble home and thankfully they all had rides. Jake went to go check on the staff only to find that they too had partaken in some of the punch. Now they were just a little tipsy. Jake told the staff to call it a night and that clean-up would be handled in the morning. Every pony toasted the Prince as they gleefully went home. He went back into the room and it looked like a war had been waged there. Discord would be proud. Jake thought to himself. When he came back only Twilight and her friends remained, every pony else had gone home. They were now sitting at a table laughing and carrying on when they spied Jake and waved him over.

“Sooo, how was the party? I noticed you’re still mostly put together.” Twilight smiled.

“Yeah, it was…fun. Now all that’s left is clean up.”

“Hey hey hey, that can wait till the morning. *hick* Fluttershy said pointing a shaky hoof at Jake.

“No I’ll take care of it now. You guys are going to love this.”

With that Jake’s horn glowed and everything in the room came to life save for the table and chairs the friends were using. Suddenly cleaning supplies lined up in front of Jake like military troops forming for inspection. “Alright listen up. I want this room clean post haste. I want the floor swept and mopped, dirty linen report to hampers. Trash in the cans and then go to the dumpsters. Any questions…no, then let’s make it happen. With that the room set to straightening and cleaning itself. The Friends sat in awe as Jake continued to lead the cleaning efforts by calling out orders to objects and having them respond in action. In what took no time at all the room was cleaned and organized and ready to be used again for the next party. The friends stared at Jake.

“That was AWESOME!!! Can you come to my house and do that?” Rainbow asked.

“Sorry I’m not usually in the cleaning business.”

“That was pretty incredible Jake. Have you done that before?” Twilight asked looking very impressed.

“It’s how I kept my place clean in Ponyville since I didn’t have time to do it myself.”

“I should have made that your final exam. That was amazing but you have servants that can do that you know.”

“I know Twilight but they work hard every day. They deserved a little break and since they got into the punch I thought it would be better if I take care of this one.”

“Well that was sure nice of ya to look out for’em. Most royals wouldn’t have been so nice.” Applejack replied.

“Well thankfully, I’m not really a royal.”

“You may not have royal blood in you darling but you’re definitely royalty material.” Rarity said as she raised a partially empty glass.

“Speaking of royalty where are Princesses Celestia and Luna? I heard some ponies ooh and ahh earlier and some bright flashes of light outside. Were they doing a fireworks show?” Twilight asked.

“Something like that. There were exhausted and apologized for not bidding every pony goodnight but they needed sleep.” Jake said grimacing at the thought of the sun and moon bobbing up and down in the sky.

“Well I don’t know about all of you but I’m beat, time to hit the hay.” Rainbow Dash said as she stood and yawned.

“Sounds good to me Rainbow. I’ll see you all in the morning, goodnight.”

“Goodnight!” Was the universal response as Jake walked back to bed in Celestia’s room.

. . . . .

The next morning (or at least before sunrise) Celestia began to slowly wake-up. She had never been able to sleep in since she took over raising the sun over a millennia ago, her body just wouldn’t allow it anymore. She noticed a dark figure in her bed and she smiled as she wiped the sleep from her eyes. She leaned over and kissed the figure on the side of the head. “Do you know how much I love you?” She whispered into the figure’s ear.

The dark figure (who she assumed was Jake), rolled over and responded in her sleep. “I love you too.” Luna said with a smile.

Celestia was taken back. Luna?! But where’s Jake? She looked around getting her bearings and realized THIS was not her room. How in Equestria did I get here and what happened? The events from the following evening were a blur at best. She carefully removed herself from Luna’s bed and almost tripped over the bucket sitting beside it. She then noticed water on both nightstands and as she made her way to the front of the bed she noticed the other bucket on Luna’s side. This is Jake’s doing, he still looking out for us. Last night might still be a blur but she was starting to get an idea of what may have gone on as she walked towards the balcony.

The stars were out but there was light on the horizon as the day waited to be ushered in. Her head was pounding, stupid headaches. When are they ever going to leave me? She had been having these headaches every day for months now and they seemed to be getting worst with each passing day. Celestia tried to focus on the task at hand, raising the sun. She leapt into the air and as she rose towards the sky she raised her front legs over her head and…nothing happened. Celestia landed quickly and felt unsteady on her hooves. She grasped the railing so that she wouldn’t fall over and tried to catch her breath. There was shock and panic running through her mind. W-What’s going on?! Why didn’t the sun come up? She hadn’t failed to raise the sun since she had been taught by her mother countless ages ago. She took a few calming breaths and composed herself once more. She squared off with the horizon this time and really focused all of her magic on the sun. She gritted her teeth as beads of sweat formed on her brow. She was giving it her all and the sun barely poked above the horizon. She stopped, gasping for air as the world spun around her. It’s still not in the right place? Why is this so hard?!

Once the world stopped spinning and she was sure her legs wouldn’t fail her she went to Luna’s bedside. “Luna, Luna wake-up. I need your help.” She said as she put a hoof on her and started to shake her gently.

“Umm? Uh, what’s going on? Sister? What time is it?” A bleary eyed Luna said as she looked at her sister.

“It’s morning and we have a serious problem.”

“Morning…Holy Me the MOON!” As Luna came fully awake and realized that she hadn’t set the moon yet so that the sun could rise. “I’m so sorry dear sister. I’ll get the moon right away.”

Luna leapt from the bed and raced to the balcony. She stopped at the sight of the sun just barely peaking over the horizon. “That isn’t supposed to be there. And why didn’t you wake me to lower the moon. A better question is if you wanted to let me sleep why didn’t you just lower the moon yourself?” She asked as she looked over her shoulder towards her sister.

“That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I…” She trailed off and looked away trying to think how she was going to word this. “I don’t think I can raise the sun on my own. I tried this morning and that is as far as I could get it.”

Luna looked at her sister for a moment to make sure she wasn’t kidding around but the worry on Celestia’s face was obvious. “What do you suppose happened to you?”

“I don’t know, it was so hard and I nearly passed out. My head is pounding and it’s hard to focus.” Celestia said as she rubbed the side of her head.

At the mention of the headache Luna felt her start to ache as well. “Oww, I feel it too but we’ve been checked out by the doctor and we are fine. This is just stress, as for your powers you’re just not focused.”

“This isn’t stress Luna, something is very wrong with us. I think the headaches are connected to my powers being…off.”

“Ppbbbffftt, nothing is wrong. I will prove it. Once I lower the moon I will help you finish raising the sun.” Luna said giving a dismissal wave towards her sister’s concern. Like Celestia before she leapt into the air with hooves outstretched as she started over her head and lowered them. She landed hard on the balcony and as she looked towards her moon, it had barely moved. She held onto the railing and was breathing hard.

“Do you see now? Something IS wrong. That should have been nothing for you and yet here you are out of breath.”

Luna got to her hooves slowly and gave a glared at the moon then to her sister. “I am LUNA, daughter of Solaris and Evening Sky! The moon is MY birth right and I shall not be DENIED!”

She turned all of her magic on the moon and with everything she had, lowered it slowly. Once the moon was down she collapsed from exhaustion. “LUNA!” Celestia cried out as she raced to her sister’s side.

“S-see, I told you I could do it.” She said in a small voice with a weak smile. “I’m…going….b-back…sleep…night.” With that Luna passed out.

Jake I wish you were here. Celestia thought looking around in desperation.

Suddenly as if out of nowhere Jake came swooping in to land gracefully on the balcony. “What’s going on?” He looked from Luna to Celestia a serious tone dominating his voice.

Celestia wrapped her hooves around Jake. “Thank all of creation you’re here but how did you know we needed you?”

He quickly returned her embrace and then went to Luna’s side. “Something felt off. When I noticed the sun was late getting up I figured I should come back and check on the both of you. Now, what is going on here?”

“First please help me put Luna to bed and I will tell you everything.”

Jake levitated Luna’s unconscious body back to bed and tucked her in once he was convinced she didn’t need emergency medical attention. Celestia then proceeded to fill in Jake about the events of that morning and the headaches that the two of them had been suffering from.

“And you didn’t think to tell me about all this…the headaches I mean?”

“We didn’t think anything of them. We both saw the doctor and he suggested that it was stress or maybe diet. I didn’t want to bother you while you were training either. That was why you were sent to Ponyville in the first place. We were feeling run down and these stupid headaches and now this. I’m sorry for not telling you.” Celestia was on the verge of tears. She had promised not to keep things from Jake but at the time it had seemed so trivial.

Jake held Celestia and brushed her mane while staring towards the balcony. It’s alright; I would have done the same. I’m not angry just concerned that’s all. However something is very wrong and we have to get to the bottom on it. The world needs the sun and the moon and if you two are out of commission who is going to do it?”

The stress and fear slowly went away at Jake’s kind words softly spoken in her ear. Then she remembered the party from last night. She pulled away to look Jake in the eyes. “What happened last night?”

Jake gave Celestia a quick recount of the events that had gone on and how she was left in Luna’s bed.

“Hmm, so what you’re saying is that we were drunk and playing with the sun and the moon?”

“Like two kids playing with a couple of balls but you were both fine…other than trying to umm…” Jake started to blush at the memory but shook his head. “Maybe it was the alcohol?”

Celestia shook her head. “No, alcohol doesn’t work that way with us. We can get intoxicated but our magic keeps us safe. No sickness or hangovers and we recover faster than normal ponies. Sorry but we can’t blame this one on the party. So last night we had our powers and this morning we almost don’t…I don’t know what happened.”

Celestia looked to Jake who only shrugged. “I couldn’t tell you. After I put you both to bed I went back and cleaned up after everyone went home.”

She led Jake back towards the balcony. “What’s going on will have to wait. Right now I need your help raising the sun. I can’t do it and Luna is out. We were going to teach you this later but unfortunately we need you now.” Celestia was looking at the sun which hadn’t budged.

Jake took a deep breath in as he looked towards the horizon. He had seen Celestia do it several times and his magic had gotten better but this was…the SUN. Moving tables and chairs is one thing but a star is something else entirely. Celestia could see the doubt on his face. “Jake you can do this with my help. I will tell you what to do and we will raise the sun together, trust me.” She placed a reassuring hoof on his back.

He looked toward her and just smiled and nodded.

“Very well then, take your position here.” Celestia pointed at the center of the balcony.

Jake did as he was instructed. “Now I want you to close your eyes and visualize the sun. Do you see it?”

“Yes, I see it.” Jake said with his eyes closed.

“I want you to reach out and surround the sun with your magic. Like if you were grabbing it with both hooves.”

Jake horn began to glow and he started to focus on the sun. “It’s huge! Too big…I can’t.”

“Yes you can Jake. It will move for you, concentrate. Celestia said as her legs started to feel weak.

Jake leapt into the air his eyes were filled with white light. He raised his hooves above his head and the sun obeyed. Celestia looked on with pride and joy as her strength left her while the sun rose higher. Then it was like she was being hit by a bolt of lightning and she screamed in agony.
“AAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!”

At the same time Luna cried out as well. “SISTER AAAHHHHH!!!”

Their eyes were pin points as every muscle locked and backs arched in pain. The sun reached its point in the sky and Jake stopped what he was doing. That’s when the sisters passed out.

. . . . .

Jake dropped to the ground when the screaming started. “Tia, TIA! What’s wrong?” He cried out as he held her in his hooves.

There was a pounding at Luna’s door. “My Lady, we heard screaming are you alright? The door is locked please let us in!” It was Luna’s royal guards.

Jake turned his attention to the door and unbolted it. Two guards came into the room to see what disturbance was. They looked to Luna then noticed Jake holding Celestia unconscious body on the balcony. “Your highness what is going…?”

Jake cut the guard off. “GET A DOCTOR, NOW!”

One of the guards turned and ran to fetch the doctor. “How may I help?” The guard asked as he approached Jake.

“Help me get the princess to bed.” He levitated Celestia’s limp body to Luna’s bed as the guard pulled back the blankets and Jake set her in. Jake then listened to both of them. He could make out heart beats when he put his head on their chests and felt them breathe. “They’re alive. As far as what happened I’m hoping the doctor can shed some light. He apparently has been treating them for fatigue and headaches. He must have missed something.”

It didn’t take long for the guard to return with the doctor and his nurse. Also several other guards had come back with him as well. Jake filled the doctor in on everything that happened as he and the nurse went right to examining the sisters. When the doctor had taken some blood and sent the nurse off he turned to Jake.

He bowed and then proceeded to explain. “There is nothing I can find physically wrong with them. We are going to run some tests but they have only been complaining about fatigue and headaches. I can tell they have suffered some physical trauma but I don’t believe this is a germ or disease. I will know more when the tests come back but they are alicorns. They don’t get sick. I think you may want to look into magic.”

“Magic? You think that might be the cause?”

“Yes your Majesty. I’m sorry I cannot be of more help.” The doctor looked worried either for his patients or that he wasn’t being very helpful.

“It’s alright doctor. You did the best you could. Let me know what you find out from the tests.”

“Yes your Grace.” He bowed and left the room.

Jake turned to one of the guards. “Get me Twilight Sparkle.” He then turned to the rest of the guards. I want this room secured. Keep the hall clear of traffic and I want a tight lid on this. If word gets out that the royal sisters have taken ill there could be a panic.”

The guards bowed and moved with purpose to Jake’s orders. Then he was alone with just the sisters; leaning in close to Celestia, he whispered. “I swear I’m going to figure this out.”

In no time at all the guard had returned with Twilight and her friends. “Prince Star.” She said bowing, “What’s wrong with the princesses?” Twilight walked to Jakes side and looked at her unconscious mentor.

It’s wasn’t hard to see the concern and worry all over their faces. “You may leave guard and please close the door on your way out.” The guard left and closed the door. Then Jake turned to the rest. I have no idea what is going on. But the doctor thinks this might be magic related.”

“What do you mean?” Twilight asked as the rest crowded around the bed.

Jake proceeded to tell them what had happened that morning when he arrived. “So there you have it. Twilight isn’t there some kind of spell to see if they are being hurt by magic?”

“I can try.” She looked towards the sisters and her horn glowed as her eyes lit up. Then in just a few seconds her eyes were normal and the glow from her horn was gone. “Their magic is being drained somehow.”

“Drained how?” Applejack got the question in before Jake could.

“Well, every pony has magic. For the Earth ponies it gives them their strength and is considered a passive magic. This means it’s always working. The Pegasi’s magic allows them to cloud walk and manipulate the weather. For the unicorns we have the most wide range and can use magic better than the rest. The spell I just cast allows me to see the magic auras that surround every pony. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna’s are very dim. That should be the exact opposite, they should be brilliant. Unlike the rest of pony kind, alicorn auras are beaming due to how much magic they possess. I’m not sure what is draining their magic but it’s barely there.”

“And what happens if all their magic goes away?” Spike asked.

“They will become weak and frail. But the question becomes what if the force that is draining their magic doesn’t stop there? What if moved onto their life essence? It could kill them.” When Twilight finished that last statement you could hear a pin drop in the room.

“Then we need to hit the libraries to see what can drain magic, from spells, to creatures.” Jake said. He walked out to the hallway. “You there,” a guard snapped to attention. “Go with Twilight and her friends to the library. See they are given all the resources they need.”

The guard bowed and waited for Twilight and her friends. They stepped into the hallway as Twilight turned to Jake. “What will you do now your Highness? You’re not coming with us to the library?”

“Not yet, I have a few things to attend to first. As soon as I’m done I’ll join you.”

They left with the guard as Jake turned to the captain of night guards. “I need a messenger to go to the Crystal Empire and inform Princess Cadence of the situation here.” Jake then turned towards the captain of the day guards. “Please inform Princess Celestia’s royal scheduling advisor Kibitz, that due to circumstances beyond our control that neither Princess will be available right now. So everything will just have to be cancelled or rescheduled. If any pony needs me I’ll be in the royal library. Please post a guard in the room and keep me informed of any new developments.” With that Jake turned and made for the library.

Jake made it about half way there when Dusty found him in the halls. “Prince Distant Star, I need a word with you in private.”

“Unless this is extremely important I don’t have the time right now.” Jake said not even stopping.

“Oh but it is. It’s about your favorite mirror.”

At the mention of the mirror Jake stopped dead in his tracks. He slowly turned to Dusty. “The one in Princess Celestia’s chambers?”

Dusty only nodded and Jake took her into a small closet and shut the door. “Ok you now have my full attention what’s going on?”

She levitated a piece of paper out of a pocket on her maids dress. Jake took it and read.

Jake you need to come to the mirror right away. I need to speak with you on matters most urgent.

“I found this laying on the floor in front of the mirror. I was in there tiding up the place. The only other time I’ve seen paper on the floor was when you sent them.”

Dusty was the only pony outside of the mane six, Spike and the royal sisters who knew who he really was. Jake folded the piece of paper. “Did you see anything else?”

“No sir, nothing.”

“Well this is the best lead I’ve had all morning, thank you Dusty” Jake said.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what is going on? The guards are acting weird and where is my lady?”

“I will tell you only because you’re her lady in waiting and NO one else will know other than the guards.”

Dusty nodded and Jake told her what happened. She looked horrified. “It’s going to be alright. I’m going to figure this out. For now though I need you to be strong and silent ok? You may also keep attending Celestia. Just tell the guards I've sent you."

“You can count on me but please save my lady.”

Jake opened the door to the closet and smiled at Dusty as they stepped out. “Didn’t you know? That’s what princes do.”

With that he left her and went straight to Celestia’s room. He walked with purpose but didn’t run. He didn’t want to alert the castle that something might be very wrong. He would smile and bid the staff good morning as he pasted down the elegant hallways of stain glass windows and long red carpets in the center of the hall. Jake couldn’t stop thinking about the mirror. It had been how he had met Celestia in the first place. As far as Jake knew the mirror here was connected to the one in his old room back on Earth. You could even send note through the mirror and when the universe was in proper alignment one could travel between worlds. But for the life of him he couldn’t figure out who this person was. The note had been addressed to him and why now? As he reached the door to Celestia’s room and stopped and took a breath. Ok Jake, let’s do this. He stepped into the room and bolted the door behind him. “Hello? I’m here just like you asked. Now who are you?”

“Welcome, come closer and let’s have a look at you.” Said an elderly voice from the mirror.

Jake walked cautiously closer to the mirror. “Who are you?” Jake could see no one but his own reflection.

“Hmm, you’re looking quite healthy. Tell me any weird urges lately?”

“How come you can see me but I can’t see you?”

“Please answer the question boy.” The voice sounded a little impatient.

“Look I don’t have time for games right now. I don’t know who you are or how you activated this mirror…or…how you even know me, but I’m a little busy right now.” Jake’s temper was beginning to flare.

“Tell me, have Celestia and or Luna collapsed yet?”

Jake grabbed the mirror with his magic and held it off the ground. “I swear if you know anything you’ll tell me now or so help me I’ll destroy this thing!”

“Easy, EASY! Judging by your response the answer must be yes. Alright guess there is no choice then. You’re just going to have to come here. I have the answers you seek.”

“Here…where is here?” Jake put the mirror down and took a step back.

“Earth where else. Oh don’t worry, just a quick trip and your back before any pony knows you were even gone.”

“How do I know I can trust you?” Jake eyed the mirror cautiously.

“You don’t but I have the answers and without my help the three of you will die.”

“Three?”

“Celestia, Luna and you, now quite wasting time and get your plot over here.” The elderly voice sounded irritated by all the questions.

“But I thought the mirror only worked when the universe was in proper alignment?”

The elder voice laughed. “Yeah for you but for me it works when I want it too. So stand back and let me get this thing started.”

Spiraling clouds of purple smoke wrapped around the mirror and it grew in size till it was big enough for Jake to step through. Jake took one last look around Celestia’s room. Please let this not be a wild goose chase. And with that last thought he stepped through the mirror.

. . . . .

“And I think we’ll stop there for tonight.” Jake said smiling down at his daughter.
Day Lily had the covers up to her chin. She had Jake’s blue eyes. However the rest of her, from her pink mane to her white coat was all Celestia.

At the mention of the story being over she sat up. “B-but Daaaad… What happened to you next? Who did the voice belong to? When did you get you cutie mark? The story can’t be over it just can’t be.”

Jake chuckled and he put a hoof on his daughters to silence the barrage of questions and calm her down. “First, the story is not over but it’s getting late and past a certain princess’s bedtime. Secondly if I told you everything then what would I use for a story tomorrow night?”

Day Lily tried to pout and make herself as cute as possible. “Pleeassse??”

Jake just shook his head as he leaned over and kissed his daughter’s head. “I’m sorry but no more tonight. It’s time to play in Luna’s dream world.” Jake got up from his daughter’s bed and started for the door.

“Daddy, just one more question please?”

Jake turned toward her still wearing a warm smile. “What is it?”

“You’re all better now right? I mean you’re fixed.” There was concern on the filly’s face.

“Yes, my love. Daddy is all better now but you’re still going to have to wait to hear the rest tomorrow night.” He said with a wink. He and Celestia had become quite familiar with the stall tactics of their daughter when it came to bedtime.

“Uhg…fine.” Day Lily resigned herself that she was going to bed. “Goodnight Daddy I love you.”

“I love you to munchkin, goodnight.” With that Jake closed the door and turned to come face to face with Celestia.

“Finishing another bedtime story are we?” As she came up and nuzzled the side of her husband’s face.

“Yup, we left off with my trip back through the mirror.” Jake said smiling.

Celestia took a step back. “You stopped there? You’re going to give her nightmares.”

“No I won’t. Luna would never allow that to happen. She’s crazy about her niece and watches her like a hawk. If even a hint of a bad dream were to start she would crush it instantly.”

Celestia rolled her eyes knowing Jake was right. Luna would rather burn the world than see Day Lily scared. “Well I’m going to say goodnight to her. See you back at the room?”

Jake kissed Celestia deeply. “What do you think?”

Celestia cheeks flushed as she turned to push the door open to her daughter’s room. From inside the room Day Lily’s voice can be heard. “Mommy! Story time?”

Jake laughed quietly to himself as he took a quick look in on the two of them. Day Lily caught sight of him and waved as Celestia looked back over her shoulder with a warm smile and evening eyes.

“Daddy, come here really quick.”

Jake came back to into the room and took a seat opposite Celestia on his daughter’s bed. “What is it?”

Day Lily motions for the two to come closer and then she wrapped her hooves around both of them in a group hug. Jake returned the hug as did Celestia.

This is what it’s all about. Jake thought as he just enjoyed that moment with his family.
