A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
Midnight Sparkle has left a lot behind in her quest for the secrets of power, beyond the constraints of the Jedi Order she once served. She has answered the call of the dark, and in doing so, abandoned her old identity and purged her old connections with painful finality.
Yet as she seeks the knowledge of a powerful Jedi holocron that once lay outside her reach, she's confronted by a face she never thought she'd see again...
For those familiar with Star Wars (the story does not require more than a basic knowledge of series lore), this story takes place at an unspecified point in the galaxy's history, and features some creative departures with the canonical depiction of Jedi holocrons.
Second place winner of the Sunset x Villains Sci-Fi Shipping Contest. Also an entry into A Thousand Worlds Contest II. Pre-read by The Sleepless Beholder and Dewdrops on the Grass.

Frankly, if you don't know anything about Star Wars... WTF is wrong with you? And nice to Sunset, even dead, can still beat Midnight.
Holy Guacamole! Someone mentioned Stars Wars on the internet and the comments didn't erupt into flames!?

Don’t jinx it, you fool!
Probably reading too deeply into this, but my guess is perfectionist Twilight ended up killing Sunset because of Sunset's braking the code, only for the pain of doing so to brake Twilight and lead her down this path.
Sunset was fine, she hadn't fallen, nor was she in risk of it, but Twi lessen Zeroed over it and this is the result.
Good to see, even fragmentary and an echo of the real Sunset from one of the other Jedi, she could still beat Midnight.

Don't worry, I'm not going to say anything bad.
So about the Last Jedi...
nice work
Ah yes. All Sith greatest weakness, Poor Impulse Control.
Nice little story, good work.
"KHAAAAAN!"
"...Does she know which script she's reading--"
"KHAAAAN!"
And as ever, the dark is brought low by the purifying power of the light.

Nothing wrong with that! But you probably shouldn't be judging a SF contest, if so...
Anyway! A good, if dark, alternate. Hunger for knowledge, combined with excessive respect for rules gone bad is a very believable reason for Twi to slip and fall, Sunset would be a Jedi in the mold of Qui-Gon Jinn.

Evil is self-destructive and self-defeating.
Short but bittersweet in the best way kudos on keeping the Star Wars lore basic and accessible
whoa what what the fuck is a “Star Wars” i have never heard of such a thing in my life
gottem, more like Sunset Winner
can’t believe Sunset’s holocron ghost deadnamed her smh
aww!
oof that is very much a Sith Lord thing to say
destroyed by facts and logic
gottem
aww, that is definitely the core of the Sunset Shimmer x Midnight Sparkle ship. Midnight Sparkle does fit into the Sith Lord tropes a little too well, doesn’t she? thank you for writing!
Oh hey, an entry in the Sunset shipping contest whose theme I proposed. Because I won with Plug at First Sight, using an idea you proposed. Funny how this sort of thing comes full circle.
Now for a facade of neutrality. (In all seriousness, I’m genuinely approaching this as I would any other entry, aside from being amused at the interconnectivity of life.)
Beautifully tragic story. Embracing the Dark Side isn’t known for doing a lot for your logical faculties. Poor Darth Consistent here is so ruled by the attachments she sought to destroy that it makes her destroy everything she sought to gain in exchange. Sunset dancing (well, having danced) on the edge of the Dark Side herself is a nice touch. I imagine Master Celestia has a rather unconventional approach to the rejection of attachment herself… assuming Midnight hasn’t also killed her.
All told, excellent unhappy ending for one of my favorite pairings, and a fine job of mapping EqG to a galaxy far, far away. Thank you for it.

Hate to ruin the fun, but didn’t you win for The Earth and the Sun? Though I suppose me editing The Goddess of Empathy could possibly salvage the connection. Anyway, thank you very much!
