When I write comedy I tend to give myself one rule: "if you aren't laughing while you're writing it, then it sucks shit."

Writing something for the sole purpose of "oh it's popular" may put you in that infernal box, but I guarantee you that unless you're a fucking super writer, your story won't be funny if it isn't funny to you.
