To be honest, yes. I've come to the point to not expect much from stories now a days, as the modern era of literature has swept a lot of good plot lines away.

I've also spent way too much time on fanfiction.net and reading the works of my underclassmen friends.

Your main character has a great progression, and has some untold back story to it. It was better than I expected for a fan fiction, and does it's job as a story with grace.
