Thessalonica was decent, but didn't carry enough elements to balance out the suspense/crazy/etc.
Falling Stars, on the other hand, threw in plenty of jokes that don't require readers to be terribly BT-savvy to get them to make the balance work. It helps that it threw in some more realistic 'facts of life' elements like kill or be killed, followed by (possibly) handling the resulting emotional/mental trauma.
