In the early 1970s, David Geffen had founded Asylum Records, best known for recording the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. He stepped down from Asylum to become vice president of Warner Bros. Pictures in 1975. Warner Bros. abruptly kicked him out of the studio in 1978, but his five-year contract with the studio prevented him from finding outside work.
