. I planned on basing a bunch of Celestia's old friends on favorite musicians of mine. It's still up in the air, however, whether or not Johnny's going to be another former god or just a regular pony that she was simply close to

No worries, yo, she's a big girl. She just needs to let it out for a bit before getting back onto her hooves and soldiering on.
As for Tom, the way I saw it in my head, he'd been there and seen a lot of ponies die. He'd seen it for a long-ass time. In the end, he just got... tired. Worn down. He was ready to go himself, but he wanted to bury the hatchet before shuffling off. That and, maybe, just maybe, see something that wasn't as dark as death that he hadn't seen in a long time.
