Cackling Moron

"Fluff" in the same way what collects under the sofa is fluff.

This story is a sequel to Like Clockwork

It has been approximately three years since Cozy Glow passed into the tender loving care of Paul the human and she has, in spite of these dire circumstances, done quite well for herself. Indeed, it may be fair to say she has thrived, becoming if not a wholly normal teenager then at least a more well-rounded and settled one. She is happy.

By contrast Paul has, if anything, regressed. The man who felt his life had not amounted to much and what little remained would amount to even less has instead thrown himself - in his own way - wholeheartedly into trying to set up Cozy for her own life, with very little thought given to what is left of his own. While she moves forward, he has slipped backwards, and the gulf widens or so Cozy fears.

The situation is untenable, both sides have the best of intentions, and mistakes are made.

Pretty hilariously stupid mistakes.

(Also the only story of mine ever to have been pre-read (in places) beforehand by someone else. How exotic!)

I didn't know I needed this but your previous story on Cozy Glow and Paul was amazing and I just had to read this on when I saw it came out.

Huzzah! A sequel! At long last! I look forward to the continuation! Keep up the good work!

Twilight's dialogue reminded me a bit of your OC's, but then it's been a while.

The return of the grumpy old Slav, very good.

I am very lucky to find this right after reading the 1st part. I was just about to message you and ask if a sequel would ever be.

So I'm very happy to find myself here.

Well let's be honest, a lot of these meatpuppets flow together, but that's their misfortune for being written by me.

11145838
He's not - uh, he's mostly just whatever people want him to be, really...

11146274
It's one of those things that's been sat around semi-written for years only I've recently been seized by a fae mood and set about to actually filling in the gaps and pushing it out the door. So to speak.

11145593
D'aww, I'll blush

Excellent, it's good to see Paul is still the crotchety old man with a soft spot for kids as last time

Yay! I'm glad to see these duo again!

Can't say much that nobody else has said, but I really am happy to see more of this story. The way you write Cozy's inner dialogue―which is snarky, self-reflective, and still a touch psychopathic―really elevates the character.

You have no idea how great of a surprise it is to see a equal to Clockwork. This is perfect! I love Cozy here, her development makes perfect sense after such a time skip and her conversation with Twilight and Celestia were great.

“A...cookbook?” She asked, staring at the cover, at a loss.

For Cozy --- anarchist cookbook.

I hope Paul gets some help for his traumas in some form, even if exceedingly reluctantly or via having nowhere else to go and being forced into it.

The idea was, fairly obviously, not a good one. This should probably go without saying but it bears making very clear. It might have been so not good, in fact, that it was actually bad.

I have never read a narrator so assiduously defend their reliability.

The narration wants to make it clear that all views and opinions and actions undertaken by any characters here depicted are the views, opinions and actions of those characters, and not those of the production team or associated holding corporations.

Truly, only the best of plans are made in minutes with few (if any) details.

“I think she’s gone weird since living with Mr Paul,” said Sweetie Belle, again voicing a shared opinion.

They all nodded. He was indeed a bad influence.

a bad influence since no longer being a villain and trying to take over equestria and that bad? :rainbowwild:

looking forward to him chasing after her and somehow taking over the crystal empire

11147428
I know this is off topic but, I’ve seen your comments on a couple other stories (I’m hoping that didn’t come out creepy) and has the ferret on your profile picture always had those eyes? I distinctly remember the eyes being black and beady not… as they are…

ON the topic of the story, I love every bit of it! The dialogue is wonderful especially the banter had between Paul and cozy but more so than that the emotionally mushy scenes are wonderfully awkward between them! I say this only now because I inhaled the first story and, unfortunately, caught up in the sequel.

11147586
Well, now I don't know WHAT'S real. Seriously, even thought I've never changed it, I still found myself looking squinting at it trying to see if anything was different. :facehoof:

So, I was rereading Home and I got to the part with the walking rig and that made me think of Paul... So silly question, but is there any connection or just a coincidence?

11148075
Just a coincidence, I'm afraid. Home is sci-fi nonsense, Paul's point of origin is clockpunky nonsense.

The only thing better than a rushed plan is a pileup of rushed plans! This is going to be fantastic!

You referred to Applejack instead of Applebloom once or twice, which, admittedly, is in character for Paul.

I cannot possibly see any further poor decisions being made on account of this initial poor decision having been uncovered.

this is starting to feel like a series of unfortunate events, it will be unfortunate for cozy when Paul catches up

Paul better hurry, the longer Cozy is out and about, the colder her head will become! Hurry Paul, Cozy needs her hat!

This can only end well.
Poor Paul is so worried.

Well zog, I forgot to track this!

Ah well, more reading, wot?

And so the angry Russian clockwork artificer sets out to retrieve his wayward charge.

Syroc #31 · Feb 11th, 2022 · · · #5 ·

“I think there have been a lot of hasty decisions and we should slow things down, just take a minute to think..."

That sounds like solid, sensible advice, book horse.

Stop it. You take that nonsense somewhere else.

He’d make the trip just fine, he was sure. Be back in time for dinner, Cozy tucked under one arm, safe and in one piece.

This image is so cute! It makes me smile.

Also your just firing these things off aren't you?

Congrats on the rapid fire pace!

It occurs to me: getting to the crystal empire on a walking machine would prolly take a good while. Prolly plenty of time for someone to really work themselves up into a tizzy. Maybe to make an army of little bots that could search through a city in a hurry. Heh.

Prolly not gonna happen, but it makes me snicker to imagine Paul invading the empire with a swarm of bots just to make sure his definitely-NOT-daughter had a proper hat on.

11150607
It's a condensed journey, as I glanced at a map and was like "fuck it".

Heh, she now returns home on the train unknowingly passing him as he travels by automaton to the empire and on arrival finds that he has left to go get her. She then gets back on the train to meet him and unknowingly passes him again as he is returning to canterlot after being told she went back home, Que benny hill music as this repeats a few times..

11150967
And, so they say, they're still doing it to this day...

Ever seen Family Guy? I could totally see Paul acting like Peter Griffin goes to his daughters boyfriend place to talk to him while holding a gun. It would be really funny to read that scene with Paul and Cozy

“That I care about him! That I love him! That I’m not lying about either of those! I just want him to know! And to believe me! He doesn’t even have to love me back, I just want him to believe me! He - if it wasn’t for him-“

This hit me in a place I can't describe. I absolutely adore just how much Cozy's come to care for the surly fellow Paul.

It’s definitely going to be funny if Cozy left back home and Paul ends up at the Empire being told she left after going all the way to get her. Very sweet story you got here

Paul is many things, and quite a few of them negative, but he is not a quitter. Even with all his faults you can't help but respect the stubborn old bastard.

Syroc #41 · Feb 13th, 2022 · · · #7 ·

Eh, if nothing is gonna happen on the trip, then the best thing is to just get it out of the way quickly. Nothing wrong with exercising a bit of narrative license.

And oh jeez, thats not a good way for an old man to pass out.

Paul is becoming the father Cozy needed even though he is a stubborn Man :fluttercry:

And it's another day of adventures for the Good Plans Family!

11151561
I'm typically not a fan of the "Every part of the story must be serving some specific purpose to further the meticulous clockwork mechanism of the story" approach to making words (CF: every other thing I've ever written, ever) but looking at it I really couldn't see much benefit - to me writing or anyone else reading - to covering an old man riding for x-many hours on his own, probably swearing under his breath.

So in short, yes, what you said.

11148075
Paul may be from Terry Pratchett's Disc World but don’t tell anyone because that coincidental reference is supposed to be a secret.

11148483

The only thing better than a rushed plan is a pileup of rushed plans!

John Murphy's cover of Zorba the Greek would be apropos for a build-up to the slow-motion train wreck in a puppy orphanage Paul's antics is shaping up to be:

Well then, hugs. Hugs are good wot? Nothing like a good scare to get people talking.

As if I'd write anything depressing.

Bah.

abuaali #48 · Feb 14th, 2022 · · · #8 ·

As if I'd write anything depressing.

Jack.

I'm so incredibly happy that this isn't showing as complete.

11152679
Well of course it's not ending like that!

...he has to die! Slowly. And alone.

I kid.
