Longdesc
Before becoming the Pillar of Strength, a young Rockhoof is separated from his lover, a unicorn hailing from the distant lands beyond Old Equestria. This is the story of their reunions throughout the years. Fated by circumstance to long for, but never regain, what they had lost in their youth.
Info

Thanks to and Graymane Shadow and TCC56 for prereading the second draft.

Was that supposed to be a horizontal dividing line?
...Also, I'm a bit puzzled why this isn't tagged "Tragedy", but I do think I still enjoyed it.
That's a classic.

thanks, fixed that! added 'sad' tag because i guess that is fairly accurate. "tragedy" is more greek tragedy

thanks! was proud of that one

> "tragedy" is more greek tragedy
If Asmat was the main character, perhaps it could be considered some sort of tragedy. Not Greek, but maybe some other sort. Agree with not adding the tag though.

You're welcome. :)
[shrugs] Fair enough; it seems like that tag would be a good fit to me, but there's a fair amount of subjectivity, aye, in exactly what "Tragedy" does mean there -- and you're the author and tag-setter here, not me.
*sobs uncontrollably*

push your boundaries smh
I admit I was hoping for a cute happy reunion where Asmat would be released from stone...
Can't deny this sad ending works so much better though
There are enough hints here and there to make me question if what Rockhoof was defending was really worth it, and if Asmat didn't have a few good points of his own, but they're far enough in the background to just add this interesting texture to the story. And it's so completely within character for Rockhoof to just never question it, too.
Switching POVs to Sunburst at the end also worked super well! His nerdy unicorn energy reflecting Asmat's, and providing enough emotional distance to make the melancholy ending work without needing to explain every emotion going through Rockhoof's head. Just two old statues staring at each other to the end...
I'm still sad Asmat never got to see the Equestria of peace and harmony he wondered about, tho.
