Glad you liked it! The answer to your question is boring, but...
One inspiration is that there are some things I want to see more of in horror media. I want more horror stories about empathy with otherness, about confronting ambiguity and being changed by it. Horror can be BEAUTIFUL and beautiful horror is what I'm looking for. For a good example not enough people have heard of, maybe look at the indie game Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow. Tagline: "Every house is haunted." It's my second favorite horror game of all time and it's a friggin' haunted house of all things, admittedly for a given value of "haunted." It's cheap and short, and you can watch playthroughs on YouTube.

That’s very much not what I was expecting. This felt like a historical oddity might’ve sparked its development, so it’s a surprise to hear it wasn’t anything especially grim at all.

This story is missing a bit of...how to phrase this, "successful delivery of the emotional depth it attempts." I understand it, and I feel it...but the depth of feeling isn't quite as much as it could have been. But it is still a good story, and the delivery is sufficient. If anything, really, the places where the emotional depth is diminished, it seems diminished because your protagonists are timeless immortals who've done this before. A toddler attempting to pet a tiger and being unexpectedly mauled is tragic. An adult attempting to pet a housecat and being slightly scratched just like they knew they would be, is not.

You present a horror, but have a pair of clearly experienced immortals who are well-prepared to deal with it. They make it seem familiar. Routine. As a result, the horror of the event seems diminished.

It is, nevertheless, a good story, a good premise, and well written.

Loved this premise. I love the supernatural. I've experienced a few odd happenings, myself, but by and large I've just always been inspired by hauntings and what goes bump in the night. I can absolutely see Celestia and Luna tackling mysterious, but not nessecarily save-Equestria crucial things like this amidst retirement.

Stellar job. :moustache:

This is a beautiful story--sad, haunting, otherworldly, and beautiful. You did an excellent job of making the house feel dark and alien, and did a great job at bringing in the dream-logic of the place. Wonderful!

It's 3:37 AM here. I'll give it another read in the afternoon when I'm less dead, but for now I'm comfortable saying this is a solid fave.

This was a great and spooky story! Very sad and exceptionally well written. Great job!

Dayuuuum! I loved this! The prose was great, the premise was great. Sure, it was a bit less scary that Celestia and Luna have done this before, but my poor sad heart appreciated it, and besides, it was still tense, in my opinion. But most importantly I wanted there to be a happy ending. Those poor children…

I love finding hidden gems, this was fantastic
