Official Dueling Procedures and Rules
1. Both entrants must be given a basic levitation spell prior to the game beginning.
2. Both entrants must be given the shield spell designed by Myself (Star Swirl the Bearded). Any modification to the spell must be forseen and accepted by the Magical Tribunal.
3. Spell Locks must be used if legally acceptable. If not, tracer charms must be applied to the perimeter of the dueling facility set to track level six or higher Magicks cast in the vicinity. Those caught casting such spells are to be disqualified without questioning.
4. Both entrants must be in fit mental condition at the time of competition. If they are not in fit mental condition, they have a maximum of 48 hours to ready themselves for their mental state to be tested once more.
5. Black Magicks, whether or not their spell level is low enough, are completely and utterly banned.
6. The summoning of sentient beings is forbidden. Mind-sharing beings which technically "think for themselves", but still think with your own mind are legal.
7. Physical contact is forbidden. All blow must be made by magical means, or by a previously mentioned mind-sharing being.
8. Chant or otherwise vocal based magic is forbidden.
9. Mind Reading or any other clairvoyant spells of the opponents mind are forbidden.
10. Targeting the pre-cast shield with dispelling magic is forbidden. Legal punishment can and will result from attempting to tamper with this spell.

Posted something that is honestly, more for my good then yours, but some of you might like to read it.
Essentially explains the spell-classing system, and what kinds of magic are banned.
I'm not pagewhoring, I promise. I just like my thoughts organized so I don't fuck some ruling up late in the fic.
Oh, thats a bonus, the fic is going to be big. Happy now?

Well, with your little comment there, I'm expecting rules 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 to come into play at some point. Just because they seem the most disruptive.
And woo! Kinda-update!
I found it interesting.
Not a chapter...
I cried a bit on the inside.
dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/Twilight_Sparkle_lolface.png I am pretty sure I asked for something like this in the comments, and if I didn't I meant to.
Doesn't rule 8 mean that Lyra cheated and is therefore disqualified?
1221661
Rule 8 forbids chant and vocal spells, not all sonic spells. There were no lyrics, so it wasn't illegal. Rule 9, however, forbids clairvoyance, which Siren's Song is designed to defend against. So, no, it wasn't cheating. It was just unnecessary and poor strategy.
Unless, as a side effect, it's naturally distracting even without clairvoyance. In which it was clever thinking and good strategy.
level 11!
I may use this as a guide for magic in my own story... if that's okay with you, of course. I never plaigerize, no matter how insignificant it seems.

Derpy.

Wow, really? Go ahead. Just mention somewhere that I created the basis of it or something if you plan on editing it, which you can most definitely do to fit where you want your story to go.

You actually weren't the person/pony who gave me the idea. I had written this guide out in just sort of a slambook type deal on a google doc with someone, so this is me organizing our idea-throwing-session.
although i wish it was a real chapter; the rules and how magic is classified are very much appreciated
I'm the guy that sent you a message that one time talking about what I called Star Theory--basically, a system quite similar to your spell classification, but with distinct boundaries from unicorn to unicorn based on their power level. Its name comes from the idea that star cutie marks (such as Twilight's, Blueblood's, Celestia's, etc) represent a special talent of some form of magic, and the number of points (or "pointation") is the power level of the individual. Celestia's eight, Twilight's six, Star Swirl is perhaps five (due to the stars on Twilight's costume and the marks on previous-gen toys with the same name), Blueblood is four, etc. I consider this more of a headcanon than a fanon, since it is supported by evidence inside the show.
I said before that the power classification was somewhat similar to that, but I've got to say, this is really close. The only real differences are that, on your scale, Twilight can access at least level 7 (if that's what the memory spell in Return of Harmony is), and Celestia and Luna can also reach level 10 (I'd suggest changing that level a bit, by the way--if the Princesses can access the same power as the Elements, why would they ever use them?); whereas they are bound at six and eight, respectively, in kosher Star Theory.
Like I've said, our two systems could mesh brilliantly--not as a restriction to you, but just an expansion to your theory. I give you express permission to incorporate my theory if you wish, and though I'd appreciate credit I don't require it.
By the way, if level 3 is creating physical objects, why can't unicorns create endless bits and be rich? Granted, creating endless bits would be tiring for most, but that's not the point. What besides law prevents them from making gold? I've solved that problem in my stories by restricting synthesis by pointation--three-point (the lowest normal pointation) can make iron, four-point can make steel, five-point can make cobalt (which is a magical superconductor), six-point can make obsidian (which is a magical superinsulator), seven-point silver, eight-point gold (both of which amplify magic), and the mythical nine-pointed alicorns could create platinum, which is pure solidified aether.
But enough rambling. I'm pretty sure this comment is even longer than the chapter it's on. I won't blame you if you skip most of it.
1224151
Oh, I apologize, my reply to your message didn't get sent. ^_^
I'd rather not mix stories, honestly. The answer to your concern about bits has a few answers that I could use to defend myself.
1. An enchantment over the Canterlot Mint that prevents bits from being cloned like that.
2. Overly complicated things to clone
3. Serial numbers
I can continue with ways to counter what you said. I'd rather not mesh systems because that limits myself in terms of what powers I can give which pony and why.
Plus, I gave Lyra the ability to do combat magic. She doesn't have starpoints.
1224692 Ah, no worries then. I thought I was just being annoying or something.
It's not really mixing stories. At least, no more than writing regular fanfiction is, really. And it's no more restricting, either. Plus, at least three authors, including me, are using it right now, so it's not story-specific. Like I said, much more of a headcanon than a fanon.
And the cutie mark is just for when their special talent is magic or something related, like Twilight or Celestia (raising the sun with magic). Some ponies have shapes that hint at their pointation (like Rarity's four-pointed gems), while some have nothing similar at all. Technically, every unicorn has a pointation because every unicorn does magic, the star just may not be evident.
The theory is pretty damn flexible for most things, though. You'll see several variations in how it's interpreted--which spells and abilities align with which pointations, whether the power levels are geometric or exponential, whether crescents represent "two-pointed stars" and what that means, whether there are levels above eight, where seven points went, etc.
But whatevs, I'm rambling again. You're perfectly justified in refusing. Thank you for considering.

Thanks for showing interest in what i've made. ^_^
Erm... Didn't Starswirl Live before Equestria was even founded?
How then does he Know avout Celestia Banishing Luna?
Other than that, This 'Chapter' Was actually really helpful.
This is Australia...
1226460
We have no evidence (as far as im aware) that this is correct.
Considering starswirls documents are in the royal library (his time travel spell), im assuming he was sort of like a Court Mage.
1233013
Well... Except for the Hearth's warming eve play. Clover the Clever states that Starswirl was her mentor, and the entire play occurs before the founding of Equestria. Or are we assuming that history has been slightly distorted in the name of Artistic Liscence?
This is Australia...

Well, if the bloke created a time travel spell, I'm ASSUMING he was damn near immortal. He might not even be dead, to be honest.
OOH that just gave me an idea for a new fic. I love you.
1254742 Fair enough. And you're welcome.
1255041
You forgot "This is Australia"
Decided to put the story on hiatus. No, i'm not abandoning it. Expect an update before halloween, I pwomise, I'm just sort of stuck on where I want to lead the story from here.
If anypony has any idea on where it should go, give me a PM. I like hearing what you guys would like to see.
1255214 Well, Sort of. That comment wasn't really substantial enough to require it. I only really put that on the end of more substantial comments. Like this one.
This is Australia...
1221661 Not really. Remember vocal and illusion spells are not the same. Lyra was purely recreating the melody, no chanting or vocal spells. Vocal spells are like "may the light come to me, so mote it be"* not a real spell, just an example* kind of thing. Illusions consist mostly of seeing things, though can be used to manipulate songs, melody. Any other questions relating to spellcasting, just feel free to ask me. P.S I actually learn magick in real life, just not very good(only one psi spell). Yes, magick is VERY real. That's why I'm learning more. Soo anymore questions?
This is awesome. You are awesome. I love this!
I'm officially your biggest fan. Let's be friends.
