First one i've seen with a convert or die ultimatum for new alicorns.
Typically they just become alicorns with no choice at all just *does something significant* and *poof now alicorn*.
I can't decide if I like this better or worse.
Realistically more choice is better but given the typical conditions one becomes an alicorn under (on earth anyway) it's hardly a choice at all.
Even then it seems a bit unfair as presumably most of the original equestrians were actually given a choice and hadn't had to do something that killed them to get the offer.
This also strongly implies this is a universe where alicorns can't permanently die rather than just being ageless and hard to kill which makes them op.
Which also assumes it's not actually a false choice as I can't imagine with all that time and power that they couldn't self terminate if they really wanted to.
But if they're literally impossible to permanently kill (seems to have a respawn system) is it nerfed by a cooldown period or something? Even with so few with them being so overpowered it seems really strange we don't hear more about them doing great things.
From what I can remember of the story most are unaware there are even any living alicorns much less that they are doing anything.
The alicorns on Earth haven't had to test their mettle much since becoming one,
Adam the Ant is the only one who's been around long enough to start experimenting and pushing his limits. He's the first to accept truly and rationalize that he will be around for a long time.
Iron Hoof was big in his day, but like Adam, the original band of people he knew back then is gone. It's a new era where humanity is moving towards feudalism, that wide-sweeping actions are being undertaken by large groups. Vivi, and Firelance are still young in the Alicorn game, still coming to terms with their powers, but because of their personal histories still tied to them, they've yet to truly grow beyond the original connections and friendships that made it possible for them to become Alicorns in the first place. Until they cement themselves within roles of higher politics, they're not all that influential outside of their zones. Thundestruck was making moves to secure her safety and for others as well before becoming an Alicorn. People are aware of them, but only those who travel ever come to pass along the story. Otherwise, people are living in their own little bubble.
Ego death. Adam went through it more than any other Alicorn, Iron Hoof went through it at a much more sedate pace. Firelance, Vivi Roulette, and Thunderstruck still have decades to go before they start down that path of accepting that everyone they know and love today will pass. New friends will come, family, but the job they signed up for is still there.
Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tyrek, Discord, the Storm King, Sunset, Starlight, or Tempest, there always seems to be something over the horizon growing in power that can challenge them. That is what I was hinting at with Ch. 83's What it means to be SPECIAL.
A unicorn can overpower a full-fledged alicorn, but it takes a lot of willpower and skills on top of that. Athena has an in-dominatable will dead set on getting back at Firelance. And, even when all seven Alicorns come together, there will be something over the horizon that can pose a threat to them. Something that threatens to break them up, or cause a massive upheaval. That is a constant in the show as well. Even when the balance of scales swing or shift in one direction, there's always something on the other end to weigh it back towards the even center-point.
Much like...Dragon Ball Z. As much training and fighting our hero goes through, there's still someone more powerful who can beat them until they can ascend to that level and breach past that point. They just haven't met them, or garnered their attention yet to be considered a worthy enough adversary.
